Chapter 11 - The Brother No One Mentioned

Nora had never known Daniel had a brother.
His name was Gabriel Bennett.
Older by three years.
Brilliant pianist.
Volatile.
Charismatic.
And officially dead for twenty-five years.
Daniel had spent his life refusing to speak about him.
Now there was no room left for silence.
“Gabriel composed those four altered measures,” Daniel admitted.
Nora stared.
“I thought you wrote them.”
“I arranged them. He created them when we were young.”
“Why did you never tell me?”
“Because Gabriel became involved with Thomas Crane before you were born.”
The story grew darker.
Gabriel Bennett had been talented enough for international stages but reckless enough to lose everything.
Gambling.
Debt.
Criminal money.
Crane rescued him financially, then used him to move cash through concert tours and arts organizations.
Daniel discovered it.
The brothers fought.
Gabriel disappeared after a warehouse fire.
Daniel was told he died.
No body recovered.
Another missing body.
Another convenient death.
Nora almost laughed at the pattern.
“So Gabriel has been alive all this time?”
Daniel looked devastated.
“If he wrote that card, yes.”
Luca searched Crane’s files.
Gabriel’s name appeared under an alias.
Gavin Bell.
Financial consultant.
Nora noticed the surname.
Bell.
The same surname Daniel used while hiding.
“Why?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“It was our mother’s maiden name.”
Gabriel had been communicating.
Perhaps watching.
Perhaps protecting.
Perhaps hunting them.
A phone rang.
Nora’s.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A man spoke.
“You play beautifully.”
Daniel stood.
“Gabriel?”
The man laughed softly.
“Hello, Danny.”
Nora looked at her father.
Gabriel continued.
“You always did collect dangerous friends.”
“What do you want?” Daniel asked.
“To finish what we started.”
“You work for Crane.”
“I worked with Crane.”
“Difference?”
“Tonight there is.”
Gabriel gave them an address.
An abandoned broadcast studio.
“Bring Nora.”
Daniel said no.
Nora said yes.
The brothers argued through the phone.
Then Gabriel said something that silenced Daniel.
“I’m the reason Nora is still alive.”
The line ended.
Nora insisted on going.
At the studio, Gabriel waited alone.
He resembled Daniel around the eyes.
Older.
Silver hair.
A cane.
A scar along his jaw.
He looked at Nora for a long time.
“You have Margaret’s face.”
“You watched me?”
“For years.”
“Why?”
“To make sure Crane didn’t get close.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“You could have told me.”
Gabriel laughed.
“You’re angry about secrets?”
Daniel stopped.
Fair.
Gabriel revealed the truth.
He had survived the fire.
Crane forced him into service.
But after Daniel disappeared, Gabriel began feeding information to Elena and Julian.
He had sent warnings anonymously.
He had placed Daniel’s recordings in Luca’s mansion.
He had triggered the ballroom system when Nora played the altered measures.
Nora stared.
“You locked the doors.”
“Yes.”
“You terrified everyone.”
“Yes.”
“You could have just called.”
Gabriel shrugged.
“I have dramatic instincts.”
For the first time in days, Nora almost smiled.
Then Gabriel’s expression darkened.
“Crane knows the federal case is collapsing around him.”
“Where is he?”
“He’s preparing to leave the country.”
“Then why meet us?”
“Because he took something.”
Nora’s stomach dropped.
“Who?”
Gabriel looked at Luca.
“Celeste.”
Luca immediately called her.
No answer.
Gabriel continued.
“Crane believes Victor left one final ledger with her.”
“Did he?”
“No.”
“Then why take her?”
“Because he doesn’t know that.”
Gabriel gave them the location.
The Vale opera house.
Again.
Crane intended to return to where he had controlled Celeste before.
Federal agents moved.
Nora watched Gabriel.
“You’re coming?”
He smiled sadly.
“I’ve been running from Thomas Crane for twenty-five years.”
He picked up his cane.
“It would be rude to miss the ending.”
They arrived at the opera house.
The stage lights were on.
Celeste sat tied to a chair.
Crane stood behind her.
A gun in his hand.
But he was not alone.
Several armed men appeared in the balconies.
Crane smiled toward Nora.

“Thank you for bringing the entire Bennett family.”
Then the theater doors slammed shut.
