Chapter 5 - The Man Behind The Shadow

I turned around.

Slowly.

Every part of me expected to see someone.

A stranger.

A threat.

The man from the photograph.

But the hallway was empty.

The lights above us flickered softly.

The restaurant behind the door remained silent.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Then Marcus stepped past me.

He looked down the hallway.

Nothing.

"Nobody is there."

Daniel didn't relax.

That was the first thing I noticed.

He wasn't relieved.

He was more afraid.

"He was."

Marcus turned back.

"Who?"

Daniel looked at the phone in my hand.

"The person who sent that message."

I held the phone tighter.

"How would they know what I received?"

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was obvious.

Someone was watching us.

Someone close enough to know every move we made.

Marcus pulled out his own phone.

"I need security footage."

Daniel immediately grabbed his arm.

"No."

The reaction surprised both of us.

Marcus looked down at Daniel's hand.

Then back at his face.

"Why?"

"Because if they know we're looking, they know we found the letter."

Marcus pulled away.

"And if we don't look, we stay blind."

Daniel stared at him.

"You still think this is about finding the truth."

"What else would it be about?"

Daniel's expression became serious.

"Surviving."

The word bothered me.

Because I had spent years believing my life was ordinary.

Hard.

Difficult.

But ordinary.

I worked.

I paid bills.

I worried about rent.

I worried about whether my ideas would ever matter.

I never thought someone could be watching me.

I never thought my father's death was a lie.

I never thought my mother's secrets were protecting me from something dangerous.

But now I was standing between two men connected by a past I never knew existed.

And both of them looked afraid.

I looked at Daniel.

"Why did you come here tonight?"

He hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

"You didn't come because of the letter."

Daniel looked away.

"No."

"Then why?"

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small object.

A key.

Old.

Metal.

Worn from years of use.

He placed it in my hand.

I looked at it.

"What is this?"

"Your mother gave it to me."

My heart stopped.

"When?"

"The night before she died."

I stared at him.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because she made me promise."

"A promise?"

Daniel nodded.

"She said if anything happened to her, I couldn't contact you until you were ready."

I almost laughed.

Ready.

That word again.

Everyone had decided when I deserved the truth.

Everyone had decided what I could handle.

Everyone had made choices for me.

"Who gave you the right to decide that?"

My voice shook.

Daniel didn't argue.

"I don't have that right."

"Then why did you do it?"

His eyes became filled with regret.

"Because I failed your mother once."

The words stopped me.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel looked at the key.

"Your mother trusted me to protect your family."

A painful silence followed.

"And I couldn't."

Marcus stepped closer.

"What is the key for?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Something your fathers hid."

Marcus frowned.

"My father?"

Daniel nodded.

"Both of them."

The hallway suddenly felt smaller.

I looked at the key.

A small number was engraved into the metal.

Nothing else.

"Where does it go?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Your father told your mother that if she ever needed proof, she should give this to you."

"Proof of what?"

Daniel opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

His phone rang.

The sound cut through the hallway.

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked at the screen.

The color drained from his face.

Marcus noticed.

"Who is it?"

Daniel didn't answer.

He simply showed us the screen.

No name.

No number.

Just one word.

UNKNOWN.

The phone kept ringing.

I don't know why, but I knew answering it was a mistake.

I knew it before Daniel touched the screen.

But he answered anyway.

For three seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel's expression changed.

His eyes moved toward me.

"Evelyn."

I stepped closer.

"What?"

The person on the other end said something.

Something that made Daniel close his eyes.

Then he handed the phone to me.

I didn't want to take it.

But my hand moved anyway.

I placed it against my ear.

At first, there was only silence.

Then a voice.

An old voice.

A familiar voice.

A voice I had not heard in twelve years.

"Evelyn."

My knees almost gave out.

Because I knew that voice.

I knew it from childhood.

From nights when I couldn't sleep.

From the kitchen when my mother was still alive.

From the man who used to carry me when I was tired.

My father's voice.

"Dad?"

The word barely left my mouth.

Marcus and Daniel both stared at me.

The voice on the phone became quieter.

"You found the letter."

I couldn't breathe.

"You're alive."

A pause.

Then:

"I was waiting for you to find the truth."

Tears filled my eyes.

Not because I was happy.

Because I was angry.

"Where have you been?"

Silence.

"Where have you been for twelve years?"

The voice on the phone broke slightly.

"I was trying to keep you alive."

I shook my head.

"No."

My voice became stronger.

"You left me."

"No, Evelyn."

The answer came immediately.

"I ran because they were coming for you."

I looked at Marcus.

Then Daniel.

"Who?"

Another silence.

Then my father said:

"The person standing beside you."

My blood turned cold.

I looked at Marcus.

He looked just as shocked as I was.

"What?"

The voice continued.

"Don't trust him."

Marcus stepped forward.

"Evelyn, listen to me—"

But my father interrupted.

"He knows why your mother died."

The hallway went completely silent.

I looked at Marcus.

His face changed.

Not anger.

Not confusion.

Fear.

Because he knew exactly what my father was talking about.

"Marcus."

He didn't answer.

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"What is he talking about?"

Marcus opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Daniel looked between us.

"Evelyn..."

I looked at him.

"What?"

Daniel's face was pale.

Then he whispered:

"He wasn't talking about Marcus."

I froze.

"What?"

Daniel looked toward the restaurant entrance.

Slowly.

Like he had just realized something.

"The person your father warned you about..."

A sound came from behind us.

A door opening.

Daniel stopped speaking.

Marcus turned.

I followed his eyes.

The security door at the end of the hallway had opened.

Someone stepped inside.

Someone carrying a folder.

May you like

Someone who had been missing for twenty years.

And the first thing the person said was my mother's name.
