Chapter 5 - The Price of Lily

Daniel ran.

Emily followed despite the pain from surgery.

Security officers reached the NICU first.

Lily was safe.

A woman wearing hospital scrubs had attempted to enter using forged credentials connected to Claire.

She fled when the alarm activated.

The message had been a distraction.

Marcus understood immediately.

“They’re testing security.”

Emily’s fear became anger.

Victor had threatened her sister.

Now he had reached for her child.

“No more reacting,” she said. “We make him react to us.”

Richard turned over the ledger to federal investigators.

Copies were made.

Marcus created a false version for the exchange.

Then Emily did something Daniel hated.

She insisted on participating.

“No.”

Daniel’s answer was immediate.

Emily looked at him.

“You don’t make decisions for me anymore.”

“You just had surgery.”

“And Rachel was taken because of me.”

“Because of Victor.”

“Exactly.”

Richard agreed with Emily.

Victor expected Daniel to behave emotionally.

He expected Richard to hide.

He expected Emily to be helpless.

They would give him none of those things.

The meeting location arrived at midnight.

An abandoned private club on the Hudson.

Daniel and Richard entered carrying the false ledger.

Emily remained in a surveillance van with federal agents.

Victor appeared on a monitor.

Sixty-three.

Silver hair.

Expensive coat.

The familiar smiling face from family Christmas photographs was gone.

“Richard,” he said.

“Where is Rachel?”

“Alive.”

“Let her go.”

“Ledger first.”

Richard placed the case on a table.

Victor laughed.

“You always believed you were smarter than everyone.”

“No. I believed you were my friend.”

“That was your first mistake.”

Daniel watched from the shadows.

Victor continued.

“The trust should have been ours.”

“Ours?”

“I built that company with you.”

“And stole from it.”

“I took what I earned.”

Victor opened the case.

Then his expression changed.

“Copies.”

Federal agents moved.

Victor ran.

Gunfire erupted from one of his security men.

Daniel tackled Richard behind a concrete column.

Agents stormed the building.

Victor escaped through a service corridor.

But Rachel was found upstairs.

Alive.

Emily reached her twenty minutes later.

The sisters held each other.

Rachel whispered, “He kept talking about Lily.”

“What did he say?”

“That Lily wasn’t supposed to be born yet.”

Emily froze.

Rachel continued.

“He said the emergency C-section ruined his timing.”

Marcus heard.

That changed the investigation.

Emily’s medical emergency might not have been natural.

Doctors reviewed her admission.

Her bloodwork showed traces of a medication she had not been prescribed.

A medication capable of triggering complications in pregnancy.

Emily remembered the pharmacy.

She had purchased prenatal vitamins that afternoon.

The bottle was recovered from her hotel room.

Several capsules had been tampered with.

Daniel nearly collapsed when he heard.

Someone had tried to harm Emily and Lily before they ever reached the hospital.

Investigators traced the pharmacy footage.

A man had switched the bottle after Emily paid.

His face led directly to Victor’s security company.

The case was no longer financial fraud.

It was attempted murder.

For the first time, Emily saw fear in Richard’s eyes.

Victor had crossed a line even Richard had not believed possible.

Two days later, Lily improved enough to leave intensive care.

Emily held her for nearly an hour.

Daniel sat across the room.

He had not asked Emily to come home.

He had rented a small apartment nearby.

He gave Emily access to every account.

Every phone.

Every record.

Not because she demanded it.

Because secrecy had nearly destroyed them.

Claire visited with Sophie.

The little girl carried a handmade card.

SORRY YOU GOT WET.

Emily laughed for the first time since the sidewalk.

Sophie looked worried.

“Are you mad at Uncle Daniel?”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Sophie.”

Emily smiled gently.

“A little.”

“Mom says he was an idiot.”

Daniel coughed.

Claire looked innocent.

Emily almost laughed again.

It did not fix anything.

But it reminded her that life could still contain warmth.

Later, Daniel walked Emily to her temporary apartment.

At the door, he stopped.

“I’m going to say something once.”

Emily waited.

“I love you. But I understand that loving you doesn’t give me the right to ask you to stay married to me.”

Her eyes filled.

Daniel continued.

“What I did on that sidewalk was cowardly. Whatever danger existed, I had other choices. I chose the one that made you carry the cost.”

Emily said nothing.

“I’m sorry.”

This apology was different.

There was no “but.”

No explanation attached.

Emily nodded.

“Good night, Daniel.”

“Good night.”

He walked away.

Inside, Emily found an envelope beneath her door.

No postage.

No name.

Her stomach tightened.

She opened it carefully.

Inside was a photograph of Daniel holding newborn Lily in the hospital.

Taken through a window.

Someone was still watching.

On the back was an address.

And a sentence.

VICTOR ISN’T THE ONE WHO ORDERED IT.

Emily immediately called Marcus.

He arrived with Daniel and Richard.

Richard saw the handwriting.

His face changed.

“You recognize it,” Emily said.

Richard didn’t answer.

“Who wrote this?”

Richard sat down.

“There was one person who knew everything about the trust before Victor.”

“Who?”

Richard looked toward Daniel.

“Your mother.”

Daniel stared at him.

“My mother died seventeen years ago.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

The room went silent.

Daniel whispered, “What did you say?”

Richard looked at his son.

“I said your mother didn’t die.”

Then Emily’s apartment buzzer rang.

Marcus checked the security camera.

A woman stood downstairs.

Gray hair.

Elegant coat.

She looked directly into the camera.

Daniel stumbled backward.

May you like

He recognized her immediately.

His mother was standing at Emily’s door.
