Chapter 2 - Room 814

Daniel backed away from the door.
The handle stopped.
Then turned again.
“Daniel?”
The voice belonged to Claire.
He opened the door.
Claire stood alone, soaked from the rain.
“Where’s Sophie?” he asked.
“With my mother.”
Daniel held up the photograph.
Claire went pale.
“Where did you get that?”
“My desk.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Who put it there?”
“I don’t know.”
Daniel turned the photograph over.
The handwritten message remained impossible to ignore.
HE KNOWS THE BABY IS YOURS.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“Who is ‘he’?”
Claire stepped inside and locked the door.
“Where’s Emily?”
“Gone.”
“Daniel, where?”
“I don’t know.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“You denied knowing your pregnant wife in the street, and now you don’t know where she is?”
“You told me not to involve her.”
“I told you not to tell her about my father until we knew what he wanted. I did not tell you to destroy your marriage.”
Daniel ran both hands over his face.
The truth was uglier than Emily could have imagined but different from what she believed.
Claire was not Daniel’s lover.
Sophie was not his daughter.
Claire was Daniel’s younger half sister.
A sister whose existence Daniel himself had discovered only six weeks earlier.
Their father, Richard Whitaker, had maintained a second family for years.
Daniel’s mother had died without knowing.
Or so Daniel had believed.
Then Claire contacted him.
She had DNA evidence.
Photographs.
Letters.
And something more dangerous.
Evidence that Richard Whitaker had not died in the boating accident eleven years earlier.
He had disappeared.
Claire had spent years trying to find him.
Three months earlier, someone began following Sophie.
Daniel agreed to help.
They met secretly because Claire believed someone close to the Whitaker family was watching them.
Room 814 had been their emergency meeting place.
That afternoon, Claire had called Daniel after spotting the same gray sedan outside Sophie’s school.
Daniel left his Boston meeting early without telling Emily.
He had intended to be home before she knew.
Then Emily appeared.
And Claire whispered the sentence that had ruined everything.
“If whoever is watching me sees you acknowledge Emily, they’ll know exactly who she is.”
Daniel had panicked.
He chose the worst possible solution.
“I don’t know who she is.”
Now Emily was gone.
Daniel looked again at the photograph.
“Who took this?”
“I don’t know.”
“Where was Dad?”
Claire hesitated.
“Daniel.”
“Where?”
“Brooklyn.”
“When?”
“Three weeks ago.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You saw him three weeks ago and didn’t tell me?”
“I wasn’t sure it was him.”
“You were sure enough to photograph him.”
Claire’s eyes hardened.
“I was trying to protect Sophie.”
“And I was trying to protect Emily.”
Claire looked toward the wedding ring.
“No. You were trying to control what she knew.”
The words landed hard.
Daniel’s phone rang.
St. Catherine’s Hospital.
His heart stopped.
He answered.
“Mr. Whitaker?”
“Yes.”
“This is St. Catherine’s Medical Center. Your wife has been admitted.”
Daniel grabbed the counter.
“What happened?”
“I’m unable to provide further information over the phone. Mrs. Whitaker has requested that her sister be her medical contact.”
“Is the baby—”
“I’m sorry, sir.”
The call ended.
Daniel was already moving.
At St. Catherine’s, Emily woke beneath bright lights.
Her throat was dry.
Her abdomen burned.
Rachel sat beside her.
Emily looked at her sister.
“The baby?”
Rachel immediately stood.
“She’s alive.”
Emily broke down.
Rachel held her hand.
“She’s small. Four pounds, one ounce. But she’s breathing, Em. They took her to the NICU.”
“I want to see her.”
“You will.”
Emily cried quietly.
Then she remembered Daniel.
“Does he know?”
Rachel’s expression changed.
“The hospital called him before I got here.”
Emily turned toward the window.
“I don’t want him in this room.”
“He’s downstairs.”
Of course he was.
Rachel had already heard the story.
Emily had told her between contractions.
The umbrella.
The pregnant woman.
The girl.
The denial.
Rachel wanted to go downstairs and personally remove Daniel’s teeth.
Emily wanted nothing.
That frightened her more.
A nurse entered.
“Mrs. Whitaker, there’s a situation regarding your paperwork.”
Emily looked at her.
“What situation?”
“Someone attempted to access your medical information using an authorization form.”
Emily’s blood ran cold.
“Who?”
“We stopped the request because the form did not match the authorization you completed tonight.”
“What name?”
The nurse hesitated.
“Claire Bennett.”
Emily looked at Rachel.
The hidden document.
Claire Bennett.
The pregnant woman.
“Call security.”
Downstairs, Daniel reached the maternity floor and found two security officers waiting.
“You can’t enter.”
“My wife is here.”
“She has requested no visitors except her sister.”
“I need to know if my daughter is alive.”
One officer softened.
“I’m sorry.”
Daniel leaned against the wall.
Claire arrived minutes later.
“You shouldn’t be here,” Daniel said.
“I got a call.”
“From who?”
Claire showed him her phone.
A blocked number had sent a photograph.
Emily being wheeled into the hospital.
Taken from across the street.
Daniel stared at it.
Someone had followed Emily.
Below the image was one sentence.
THE WRONG WOMAN FOUND THE FILE.
Daniel’s stomach dropped.
“What file?”
Claire whispered, “The one your father left.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What are you talking about?”
Claire reached into her bag.
She removed a small brass key.
“Room 814 wasn’t just where I met you.”
Daniel stared.
Claire continued.
“Dad rented it under another name for seven years.”
Daniel remembered the key card Emily had seen.
“What’s in that room?”
“I don’t know.”
“You’ve been inside.”
“Only the sitting area. There’s a wall safe. I couldn’t open it.”
She held up the brass key.
“I found this in Sophie’s backpack this afternoon.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“Someone put it there?”
“With a note.”
“What note?”
Claire handed it to him.
ASK DANIEL WHAT HAPPENED ON OCTOBER 14.
Daniel went still.
Claire noticed.
“You know that date.”
Daniel said nothing.
“Daniel?”
October 14.
Eleven years earlier.
The night Richard Whitaker supposedly died.
Daniel had been twenty-three.
And he had been the last family member to see his father alive.
Across the hospital, Emily’s phone buzzed on her bedside table.
Rachel picked it up.
“Unknown number.”
Emily held out her hand.
The message contained no words.
Only a photograph.
Emily enlarged it.
Her breath caught.
It showed Daniel standing beside a burning car eleven years earlier.
Richard Whitaker stood behind him.
Alive.
A second image arrived.
This one was recent.
Richard stood outside the Windsor Hotel.
The timestamp was from that morning.
Then a third message appeared.
ROOM 814. ASK WHAT YOUR HUSBAND DID.
Emily stared at the screen.
A nurse entered behind Rachel.
“Mrs. Whitaker?”
Emily looked up.
“There’s a man downstairs asking for you.”
“Daniel?”
“No.”
The nurse handed Emily a visitor card.
The name printed on it made Emily's fingers go numb.
May you like
RICHARD WHITAKER.
And according to Daniel, Richard had been dead for eleven years.
