Chapter 3 - The Dead Man Downstairs

Emily stared at the visitor card.
“Send him away.”
Rachel looked at her.
“Who is Richard Whitaker?”
“Daniel’s father.”
“I thought Daniel’s father was dead.”
“So did I.”
Rachel immediately called security.
But when security checked the lobby, Richard Whitaker was gone.
He had left behind an envelope.
It was addressed to Emily.
Inside was a storage receipt and a handwritten message.
Your husband is not the man you should fear.
Emily read it twice.
She trusted none of them.
Not Richard.
Not Claire.
And certainly not Daniel.
The next morning, Emily was taken to the NICU.
Her daughter lay beneath warm lights, impossibly small.
Emily placed one finger through the opening in the incubator.
The baby’s tiny hand closed around it.
Everything else disappeared.
“Hi, Lily,” Emily whispered.
She and Daniel had debated names for months.
Lily had always been Emily’s favorite.
Now she chose it herself.
Lily Grace Whitaker.
For the next two days, Emily concentrated on recovering.
Daniel obeyed her demand and stayed away from her room.
But he remained at the hospital.
He sat in the cafeteria.
He slept in his car.
He called the NICU only when nurses confirmed he was legally permitted to receive updates.
He did not force his way into Emily’s room.
He did not send flowers.
He wrote one message.
Lily is beautiful. I am here whenever you are ready. I am sorry.
Emily didn’t answer.
On the third day, she finally agreed to see him.
Daniel entered quietly.
He looked terrible.
Emily had never seen him so exhausted.
She felt no satisfaction.
“Five minutes,” she said.
Daniel nodded.
“Claire is my sister.”
Emily almost laughed.
“That’s your explanation?”
“It’s the truth.”
He told her everything.
Richard’s second family.
Claire.
Sophie.
The surveillance.
Room 814.
The threat.
Emily listened.
Then she asked the only question that mattered.
“Why did you say you didn’t know me?”
Daniel swallowed.
“Claire thought someone was watching us. I thought if I acknowledged you, I would connect you to whatever was happening.”
“So you protected me by humiliating me.”
“Yes.”
“No, Daniel. You protected your secret.”
He lowered his eyes.
Emily continued.
“You had paperwork about my pregnancy with Claire’s name on it.”
Daniel looked confused.
“What paperwork?”
She described it.
His face changed.
“I never signed that.”
“It had your signature.”
“I don’t care. I never authorized Claire to access your medical records.”
Emily watched him.
For the first time, she believed his confusion.
Not his innocence.
Just his confusion.
She showed him the photograph from the unknown number.
Daniel stared at his father.
Then at the picture of himself beside the burning car.
“That photograph is fake.”
“How do you know?”
“Because Dad wasn’t standing behind me that night.”
“You were there?”
“Yes.”
Daniel finally told her about October 14.
Richard had called him from a marina.
He sounded frightened.
When Daniel arrived, Richard’s car was burning.
Daniel saw a man running toward the water.
He assumed it was Richard.
The next morning, Richard’s boat was found wrecked offshore.
No body was recovered.
Richard was legally declared dead two years later.
“Why didn’t you tell the police about the man?”
“I did.”
Emily studied him.
“Then why does Claire think you’re hiding something?”
“Because somebody wants us suspicious of each other.”
Emily thought of the storage receipt Richard had left.
She showed Daniel.
He recognized the address.
“Dad owned that building.”
“Then we go together.”
Daniel looked surprised.
“You trust me?”
“No.”
The answer hurt him.
“But whoever is doing this knows about Lily now. I need information.”
They went the following afternoon, accompanied by Rachel and a private security investigator named Marcus Hale.
The storage unit contained six boxes.
Financial records.
Photographs.
Old phones.
Newspaper clippings.
And a laptop.
Marcus powered it on.
No password.
One folder sat on the desktop.
EMILY.
Daniel looked at her.
Emily opened it.
Inside were photographs taken over the previous four months.
Emily leaving work.
Emily at prenatal appointments.
Emily shopping for baby clothes.
Emily and Daniel entering their apartment.
Someone had been watching her long before Claire appeared.
Then they found financial records.
Payments had been made to a private investigator.
The client name was hidden behind a corporation.
Marcus traced it.
Bennett Holdings.
Claire’s family company.
Daniel swore.
“Claire knew.”
But Emily noticed something else.
One payment was dated three years earlier.
Claire claimed she had discovered Daniel only six weeks ago.
That meant someone using her company had been watching the Whitakers for years.
Marcus opened another folder.
Medical.
Inside was Emily’s prenatal information.
And a copy of the forged authorization.
The metadata showed who created it.
R. WHITAKER.
Richard.
Daniel stared.
“My father forged it.”
Emily felt sick.
“Why?”
A video file appeared beneath the documents.
Recorded three months earlier.
Richard sat in a dim room.
He looked older than the photographs but unmistakably alive.
“If you are watching this,” he said, “then something has gone wrong.”
Daniel moved closer.
Richard continued.
“Claire believes I abandoned her. Daniel believes I died. Both are wrong.”
Claire entered the storage unit behind them.
Daniel spun around.
“How did you find us?”
“I followed you.”
Marcus stepped between them.
Claire saw Richard on the screen.
Her face crumpled.
“Dad.”
The recording continued.
“The child Emily Whitaker is carrying has made an old arrangement dangerous again.”
Emily instinctively touched her abdomen.
Daniel whispered, “What arrangement?”
Richard looked directly into the camera.
“The Whitaker trust does not pass through Daniel.”
Daniel froze.
“It passes through his first biological child.”
Emily looked at him.
Richard continued.
“And there are people who will do anything to control that inheritance.”
The screen flickered.
Then the recording cut off.
Claire whispered, “That’s why they were watching Emily.”
Marcus examined the laptop.
“There’s another encrypted file.”
Before he could open it, the storage facility lights went out.
Complete darkness.
Rachel gasped.
Marcus drew his flashlight.
A metallic sound came from the hallway.
Someone was unlocking the unit.
Daniel pulled Emily behind him.
The door began to rise.
A pair of shoes appeared beneath it.
Then a familiar voice said:
“Emily, don’t trust Daniel.”
May you like
The door lifted higher.
Richard Whitaker was standing on the other side.
