Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Man Who Had Everything

The voice on the phone was silent.

For three seconds.

Four.

Five.

Nobody in the room moved.

I held the phone against my ear, waiting for the person on the other end to speak.

But they didn't.

They were listening.

And somehow, that frightened me more than if they had threatened me.

"Dante."

His face was pale.

"Hang up."

I looked at him.

"Why?"

His eyes moved to the phone.

Because he already knew who it was.

The person who had controlled the story of my life for decades.

The person whose name was written on the document in front of me.

The person everyone thought was dead.

I heard a quiet breath through the speaker.

Then a man's voice.

Older.

Calm.

Almost amused.

"Elena."

My fingers tightened around the phone.

I had never heard that voice before.

But everyone else in the room reacted.

My father closed his eyes.

My mother looked terrified.

And Dante looked like he was seeing a ghost.

"You know who I am," the man said.

I didn't answer.

"Your father does."

My eyes moved toward Thomas.

My father looked away.

"You spent years wondering why your family disappeared," the man continued.

"Why your mother left."

"Why your father vanished."

"Why Dante lied."

Every word felt like another door opening.

Another piece of my life falling apart.

"Who are you?"

The man laughed softly.

"That's the interesting part, Elena."

A pause.

"I was the person your husband trusted most."

I looked at Dante.

He didn't deny it.

"Before you knew my name, you knew my influence."

My grip tightened.

"You're the reason my father disappeared."

Silence.

Then:

"No."

My chest tightened.

"I am the reason your father survived."

Nobody spoke.

The answer was impossible.

My father stepped forward.

"Don't listen to him."

The voice continued.

"Your father is still lying to you."

My father looked furious.

"You don't get to rewrite what happened."

The man ignored him.

"Elena, ask your father what was inside the original file."

I looked at Thomas.

He didn't answer.

And once again, silence became the truth.

"What file?"

My father looked at Dante.

Then at my mother.

Nobody wanted to be the one to say it.

That was when I understood.

The document wasn't the beginning.

It was only a piece.

There was something bigger.

Something everyone had been protecting.

"Dante."

He looked at me.

"Tell me."

His expression broke.

"Elena..."

"Tell me."

He looked exhausted.

Like he had been carrying a weight for years.

"The foundation."

I frowned.

"What about my foundation?"

Dante swallowed.

"The one you built."

My heart started beating faster.

"What about it?"

He looked down.

"It wasn't created the way you think."

I stared at him.

"Don't."

My voice became quiet.

"Don't tell me the only thing I built for myself was another lie."

Dante didn't answer.

That was enough.

My mother walked closer.

"Elena..."

I stepped away.

"No."

I looked around the room.

At my parents.

At my husband.

At everyone who had decided they knew what was best for me.

"My entire life has been a secret."

Nobody spoke.

"And every person who claimed they loved me used the same excuse."

I looked at Dante.

"I was protecting you."

His eyes filled with regret.

"I know."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You don't know."

My voice cracked.

"You don't know what it's like to wake up and realize the person you trusted most built your entire life around information you weren't allowed to have."

The phone remained silent.

The man on the other end was listening.

Enjoying it.

And that made me angry.

I lifted the phone.

"You wanted me to find out."

The man answered immediately.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because you were the only person left who could destroy everything."

The room went still.

I stared at the phone.

"What does that mean?"

"Ask Dante."

My eyes moved toward him.

The man continued.

"Ask him why he chose your family over his own."

Dante looked up.

And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.

Shame.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Shame.

The call ended.

Just like that.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

Only more questions.

I slowly lowered the phone.

"Dante."

He didn't look at me.

"How long have you known?"

He was quiet.

"How long?"

"Since before we met."

The words hit harder than I expected.

I felt like the floor moved beneath me.

"Before we met?"

He nodded.

"My father knew your father."

"How?"

"They worked together."

My breathing became shallow.

"You told me your family wanted nothing to do with mine."

"I believed that at first."

"At first?"

Dante looked at me.

"When I met you, I didn't know who you were."

I stared.

"What?"

"My father never told me your name."

A bitter smile crossed his face.

"He only told me to stay away from certain people."

"And then?"

Dante looked at the ringless hand I kept at my side.

"Then I fell in love with you."

The room became quiet.

Because for the first time that night, I believed him.

And somehow that hurt more.

Because maybe our love had been real.

Maybe the lies came after.

Maybe the worst thing about Dante wasn't that he never loved me.

It was that he did.

And still chose secrets.

My father stepped forward.

"Elena, there is something you need to see."

He took the folder from the table.

He opened a hidden compartment inside.

A small flash drive sat there.

"Your father gave me this before he disappeared."

I looked at him.

"Why didn't you show me?"

"Because if they knew you had it, you would have become their target."

I almost laughed.

"They already made me their target."

Nobody argued.

Because it was true.

My father handed me the drive.

"Your foundation was created using money that originally belonged to my research company."

I frowned.

"What?"

"The money wasn't stolen."

He looked at Dante.

"It was hidden."

Dante nodded.

"My father moved it through different companies."

"And why?"

My father answered.

"Because he knew someone inside his organization was betraying him."

I looked at the documents again.

The fake signature.

The hidden accounts.

The missing years.

Everything connected.

Someone had built an entire system of lies.

And I had unknowingly been standing at the center of it.

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

Everyone looked at me.

I opened it.

One sentence.

You finally know the truth. Now find out what your husband did the night your father disappeared.

My heart stopped.

I looked at Dante.

His face changed.

Not because of the message.

Because of what it meant.

"You know."

His silence was enough.

"You know what happened that night."

Dante looked at me.

"I was there."

The words came out barely above a whisper.

My mother covered her mouth.

My father closed his eyes.

I felt something inside me break.

"You were there."

Dante nodded slowly.

"I was twenty-two."

"And you saw my father disappear?"

"No."

His voice shook.

"I saw who took him."

I stepped closer.

"Who?"

Dante looked at me.

And I saw the fear return.

The same fear from the elevator.

The same fear from the phone call.

"The person who ordered it..."

He stopped.

A sound came from outside the room.

A knock.

Three slow knocks.

Everyone turned.

Dante immediately moved in front of me.

My father reached for the weapon hidden beneath his jacket.

My mother whispered:

"No..."

The doorknob started turning.

May you like

Slowly.

And then the door opened.
