Chapter 3 - The Secret Behind Dante Moretti’s Empire

The person outside my house did not knock.

They did not call my name.

They simply stood there.

Waiting.

I stared at the front door, unable to move.

For nine years, I had lived in that house believing it was the one place where I was safe.

Now I realized I had never actually known who had access to it.

My fingers reached for the kitchen knife beside me.

It was not because I thought I could fight someone like Dante Moretti.

It was because I needed to feel like I still had control over something.

The door handle moved.

Slowly.

Once.

Then stopped.

A second later, my phone vibrated.

A new message.

Do not open the door.

My heart raced.

Another message appeared.

He wants you to think he came to protect you.

I looked toward the hallway.

The person outside knew exactly what was happening inside.

They knew someone was at my door.

They knew enough to warn me.

But they still hadn't told me who they were.

I stepped backward.

The floor creaked beneath my feet.

And then the person outside spoke.

"Elena."

My entire body froze.

Because I knew that voice.

"Dante?"

There was a pause.

"Open the door."

I almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because after everything that happened that night, after the slap, the ring, the secrets, the lies...

He still sounded like the man who expected me to listen.

"Why do you have my spare key?"

Silence.

That was the answer.

I gripped the knife tighter.

"How long have you had it?"

"Elena, open the door. We need to talk."

"No."

My voice surprised me.

It was stronger than I expected.

"Not until you answer me."

Another pause.

Then Dante said quietly:

"I was trying to protect you."

Those words.

Those same words.

I had heard them before.

Every time he made a decision without me.

Every time he kept something hidden.

Every time I asked questions he didn't want to answer.

Protection.

That was the excuse powerful men used when they wanted control.

I walked closer to the door but stayed several feet away.

"Protect me from what?"

Dante didn't answer immediately.

And when he finally spoke, his voice had changed.

"I need you to trust me."

I looked around my house.

At the photos.

The memories.

The life I thought I understood.

"No."

The word came out quietly.

"No, Dante. I spent nine years trusting you."

I looked at the wedding photo hanging near the stairs.

The woman in that picture had a ring on her finger.

She had no idea what was coming.

"I need the truth now."

For several seconds, there was nothing.

Then footsteps moved away from the door.

I waited.

One minute.

Two.

I slowly approached the window beside the entrance.

The driveway was empty.

Dante was gone.

But something was sitting on the ground outside.

A small envelope.

I opened the door only after checking the street.

The envelope had no name.

No address.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Three sentences.

Your father did not disappear.

He was taken.

Ask Dante why he was there.

I read it again.

Then again.

My hands went numb.

Because there was one detail that bothered me more than anything else.

The message wasn't asking me if Dante knew.

It wasn't asking me if Dante was involved.

It was telling me.

He was there.

The next morning, I did something I hadn't done in years.

I went somewhere Dante didn't know about.

My old office.

Before I worked for his foundation, before I became Elena Moretti, I had been Elena Vance.

A woman with her own career.

Her own apartment.

Her own plans.

I drove there without telling anyone.

Not Dante.

Not my friends.

Nobody.

The office was smaller than I remembered.

The receptionist barely recognized me.

But when I walked through the old hallway, memories returned.

The woman I used to be was still there.

The woman who solved problems.

The woman who trusted her instincts.

I sat at my old desk and placed the envelope in front of me.

I stared at the words.

Your father did not disappear.

My father.

The man I had spent my entire life believing was gone.

I remembered the night my mother told me.

I was young.

Too young to understand grief.

She sat beside my bed and held my hand.

"Your father loved you very much."

That was all she said.

No details.

No explanation.

Just sadness.

Years later, Dante became the person who filled that empty space.

He was the person who made me feel protected.

Which made the truth hurt even more.

Because if he knew something...

If he had hidden something...

Then my entire marriage was built on a question I never asked.

I opened my laptop.

I searched through old records.

Nothing.

No articles.

No reports.

No mention of my father's disappearance.

It was like someone had erased him.

That was when I realized something.

People didn't disappear from records by accident.

Someone made sure they were forgotten.

My phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

Dante.

I let it ring.

Then it stopped.

Ten seconds later, another call.

This time from my mother.

I froze.

My mother had not called me in years.

Not because we were distant.

Because she was gone.

She passed away when I was nineteen.

At least...

That was what I believed.

The call ended.

Then a voicemail appeared.

My hands shook as I pressed play.

At first, there was only silence.

Then breathing.

Then a voice.

A woman's voice.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

"Elena."

I covered my mouth.

Because I knew that voice.

I knew it before my mind allowed me to accept it.

"Please don't hang up."

The world seemed to stop.

"Mom?"

My voice barely came out.

The recording continued.

"I know you think I'm dead."

I stood up so quickly my chair moved backward.

"I know what Dante told you."

My heart pounded.

Because she said his name.

Not my father's.

Not anyone else's.

Dante.

"I need you to understand something, Elena."

The recording crackled.

"I wasn't taken away from you."

A pause.

"I was running from them."

My breathing became shallow.

"Who?"

The recording continued.

But before she answered, the message cut off.

I stared at the phone.

The voicemail was only thirty seconds long.

Thirty seconds that destroyed everything I knew.

My mother was alive.

Dante knew something.

And someone had spent years making sure I never found out.

I left the office immediately.

I didn't know where I was going.

I only knew I needed answers.

And there was only one person who had them.

Dante.

I drove to his Manhattan office.

The building was exactly how I remembered.

Glass walls.

Security guards.

Employees who immediately looked nervous when they saw me.

Because everyone knew.

Everyone knew about Atlantic City.

Everyone knew I had walked away.

The receptionist stood quickly.

"Mrs. Moretti..."

I interrupted.

"Where is my husband?"

She hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

"He's in a meeting."

"Tell him I'm here."

She looked uncomfortable.

"Elena..."

I leaned closer.

"Tell him."

Five minutes later, the elevator doors opened.

Dante stepped out.

He looked exhausted.

Not like the powerful man everyone feared.

Like a man who had been waiting for this moment.

"Where did you get the message?"

No hello.

No apology.

Just fear.

I stared at him.

"My mother called me."

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

And that was enough.

"You knew."

Dante looked away.

"Elena..."

"You knew she was alive."

People in the hallway stopped moving.

The silence around us grew.

"Dante, answer me."

His jaw tightened.

Then he said something I never expected.

"I thought I was keeping you safe."

I stepped back.

"From your own wife?"

"No."

His voice dropped.

"From my family."

I looked at him.

For the first time, I saw something in Dante's eyes that had nothing to do with guilt.

Fear.

Real fear.

"Your father was not the only person who disappeared, Elena."

I didn't move.

"What does that mean?"

Dante looked around the hallway.

Then back at me.

"It means your mother wasn't the first person they tried to erase."

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

From the unknown number.

I looked down.

One sentence.

Ask him who ordered your father's disappearance.

I raised my eyes toward Dante.

But before I could speak, every light in the building suddenly turned off.

May you like

The hallway went black.

And in the darkness, someone whispered my name from behind me.
