Chapter 4 - The Night My Husband Finally Chose a Side

The voice behind me whispered my name.
"Elena."
I turned around.
Nothing.
Only darkness.
The hallway outside Dante’s office had disappeared into shadows after the power went out. The emergency lights flickered once, then died completely.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then I heard footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
Coming closer.
Dante grabbed my arm.
"Don't move."
I pulled away immediately.
"Don't touch me."
Even in the darkness, I felt him freeze.
Nine years ago, I would have apologized.
I would have softened my voice.
I would have remembered that Dante hated conflict and tried to make things easier.
But that woman was gone.
The woman who protected his reputation while he destroyed her trust was gone.
A phone flashlight turned on somewhere near the end of the hallway.
One of Dante’s security guards appeared.
"Mr. Moretti, we lost power to the entire floor."
Dante didn't answer.
His eyes stayed fixed on me.
Because he knew.
This wasn't an accident.
The message.
The blackout.
The voice.
Someone wanted me afraid.
And they wanted Dante to know they could reach me.
"Take Elena downstairs," Dante ordered.
I looked at him.
"No."
"Elena."
"No."
My voice echoed through the dark hallway.
"You don't get to make decisions for me anymore."
The guard looked between us.
He had probably seen Dante control entire rooms with a single look.
But he had never seen his wife refuse him.
Dante stepped closer.
"Someone is trying to use you to get to me."
I laughed quietly.
"Maybe someone should have warned me about that before I married into this."
His expression changed.
Pain.
Real pain.
For a second, I almost remembered the man I fell in love with.
Almost.
Then I remembered Bianca.
The slap.
The silence.
The ring sitting alone on that table.
"What did my father know about your family?"
Dante looked away.
That was all I needed.
"You still can't answer."
"It's complicated."
"No."
I shook my head.
"It's convenient."
The hallway became silent again.
Then Dante said something I never expected.
"My father killed people."
The words landed harder than the slap.
I stared at him.
"What?"
"My father built everything on fear. On favors. On secrets."
He swallowed.
"I spent my entire life trying to become the opposite of him."
I looked at him carefully.
"And then?"
His eyes met mine.
"Then I became him."
For the first time that night, Dante looked like a man who hated himself.
Not a powerful businessman.
Not the man everyone feared.
Just a man who had lost control of the story he created.
"Your father found out something about my family," Dante continued.
"My father?"
"Yes."
"What?"
Dante hesitated.
And I knew whatever came next mattered.
"He discovered that my father was involved in something bigger than anyone knew."
"What kind of something?"
Dante looked toward the dark hallway.
"Something that could destroy people who are still alive today."
I crossed my arms.
"And my mother?"
His silence answered before his words did.
"Your mother helped him."
My heart stopped.
"No."
"Elena..."
"No."
I stepped back.
"You don't get to rewrite my family because you need someone else to blame."
"I'm not blaming them."
"Then tell me the truth."
Dante looked at me.
"I don't know the entire truth."
That surprised me.
For years, I believed Dante knew everything.
That was what made him dangerous.
But now I saw something else.
He was afraid because there were things even he couldn't control.
The emergency lights suddenly returned.
Everyone blinked.
The hallway came back.
But something had changed.
Because standing near the elevator was a woman.
Older.
Wearing a dark coat.
Her face pale.
Her eyes fixed on me.
I knew her immediately.
Not because I remembered seeing her recently.
Because I had spent years staring at old photographs.
My hand covered my mouth.
"No..."
Dante whispered.
"Elena..."
The woman took one step forward.
And tears filled her eyes.
"You're taller than I imagined."
My entire body went cold.
That voice.
The voicemail.
The recording.
The impossible truth.
"Mom?"
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
My mother looked at Dante.
Not with surprise.
With anger.
"You promised me she would never find out this way."
Dante's face changed.
"I tried to protect her."
My mother laughed sadly.
"That's exactly what your father said."
I looked between them.
"You know each other."
Neither answered.
That was the answer.
My entire life was a room full of locked doors.
And every person I trusted had a key.
I stepped toward my mother.
"Why did you leave me?"
Her expression broke.
"I didn't leave you."
"Then why did everyone tell me you were gone?"
She looked at Dante.
And the sadness in her eyes turned into something darker.
"Because they needed you to believe I was gone."
My chest tightened.
"Who?"
My mother looked at the security cameras above the hallway.
Then at Dante.
Then back at me.
"The same people who tried to erase your father."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"Who are they?"
My mother opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, Dante's phone rang.
He looked down.
The color disappeared from his face.
I saw the screen.
One name.
A name I had heard before.
His father's closest friend.
A man everyone believed had died years ago.
Dante answered.
"How are you calling me?"
Silence.
Then his expression changed.
My mother immediately stepped back.
"No."
Dante looked at her.
"What?"
She whispered:
"He found us."
I felt the entire world narrow.
"Who found us?"
Nobody answered.
Dante ended the call.
Then he looked at me.
Not like a husband.
Not like a man trying to control the situation.
Like someone preparing me for something terrible.
"Elena, we need to leave."
I didn't move.
"Who was on the phone?"
Dante looked at my mother.
My mother closed her eyes.
And then Dante said the name.
The name that made my mother start shaking.
The name that made Dante's security team reach for their weapons.
"The man who ordered your father's disappearance."
I waited.
But Dante didn't finish.
May you like
Because the elevator behind us suddenly opened.
And the person standing inside was someone I thought I would never see again.
