Chapter 4 - The Truth My Husband Buried

The ballroom doors were still open.
But nobody was leaving.
Not after the message.
Not after the truth started falling apart.
I stood there holding my phone, staring at the words that had destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.
"Your husband didn't just hide the truth. He helped create it."
My hands felt numb.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked back at me.
And for the first time, I saw something I never wanted to see.
Fear.
Not fear of losing an argument.
Not fear of embarrassing himself.
Fear of being exposed.
"Emily..."
My name left his mouth like a desperate apology.
But I stepped away.
"No."
The word was quiet.
Yet everyone heard it.
"Don't."
Daniel stopped moving.
My father watched him carefully.
"You have exactly one chance to explain."
Daniel looked around the ballroom.
Two hundred people were watching him.
The same people who had watched me get humiliated.
The same people who had watched him stand silently.
But now they weren't looking at me like I was guilty.
They were looking at him.
And he hated it.
"Can we talk somewhere private?"
I almost laughed.
Private.
That was what he wanted now.
After making my pain public.
After allowing his family to turn my wedding reception into a courtroom.
"No."
My voice became stronger.
"You wanted everyone to see me as a thief."
I pointed around the room.
"So everyone gets to hear the truth."
Daniel closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked like the man I used to love.
The man who held my hand during our first ultrasound.
The man who promised me we would protect our child together.
Then I remembered him standing there tonight.
Silent.
Watching.
And that version of him disappeared.
"I didn't know they were going to tear your dress."
His words were the wrong words.
Completely wrong.
I stared at him.
"That is what you have to say?"
He looked down.
"I know how it sounds."
"No, Daniel."
I shook my head.
"You don't."
The room was silent.
"You think this is about the dress?"
I touched the torn fabric.
"This was just fabric."
My voice cracked.
"This can be replaced."
I looked at him.
"But I can't replace the moment I looked at my husband and realized he wasn't standing beside me."
Daniel's face collapsed.
But I didn't stop.
"Tell me about the DNA test."
His expression changed.
The question he had been avoiding.
The question that brought us here.
My father moved closer.
Everyone waited.
Daniel took a deep breath.
Then he finally spoke.
"Six months ago..."
He stopped.
I felt my stomach tighten.
Six months ago.
The same time I found out I was pregnant.
"The doctor called me."
My eyes narrowed.
"The doctor?"
Daniel nodded.
"Dr. Collins."
The name made the room shift.
The same doctor from the photograph.
"What did he tell you?"
Daniel looked at the floor.
"He told me there was a possibility the pregnancy dates didn't match."
My heart stopped.
For a second, I couldn't understand the sentence.
Then I did.
And the pain hit harder than anything that happened that night.
"You thought I cheated?"
Daniel immediately shook his head.
"No."
But his answer came too quickly.
"Then why?"
He struggled.
"Because my mother kept saying things."
I looked at Victoria.
She didn't deny it.
Of course she didn't.
"She told me you were hiding something."
I laughed softly.
A broken laugh.
"Your mother."
I looked at him.
"And you believed her."
"No."
"Then why did you investigate me?"
Daniel had no answer.
That was the answer.
My father turned toward Victoria.
"So you convinced my son his wife was unfaithful."
Victoria lifted her chin.
"I wanted to protect my family."
My father stared at her.
"No."
His voice was cold.
"You wanted control."
Victoria's expression hardened.
"You don't know what happened."
"I know enough."
My father turned to Robert.
Robert nodded.
A new file appeared on the screen.
This time, it wasn't a security recording.
It was a series of emails.
Between Victoria.
Chloe.
And Daniel.
The room became restless.
Daniel looked up.
"Where did you get those?"
My father didn't answer.
The first email appeared.
The date was three months earlier.
The subject line was simple.
"Making Emily Leave."
My chest tightened.
I read the first sentence.
"Daniel is starting to choose her over us. We need to remind him who his real family is."
The next email was from Chloe.
"The pregnancy makes things harder. He won't leave while she is carrying his child."
Then Victoria replied.
"Then we need proof that the child is not his."
I couldn't breathe.
The room disappeared.
All I could see were those words.
Proof.
Child.
Not his.
My hand moved to my stomach.
My baby.
My innocent baby had become a weapon in their war against me.
I looked at Daniel.
"How long?"
He looked broken.
"Emily..."
"How long did you know about this?"
He didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"How long?"
His eyes filled with tears.
"Two weeks."
The room gasped.
Two weeks.
For two weeks, he knew.
For two weeks, he woke up beside me.
For two weeks, he watched me prepare for this wedding reception.
For two weeks, he let me believe everything was fine.
"You knew."
My voice became a whisper.
"You knew your family was trying to destroy me."
Daniel shook his head.
"I was trying to figure it out."
"No."
I looked at him.
"You were trying to decide whether to believe me."
He couldn't deny it.
Because it was true.
My father stepped forward.
"Did you ever actually believe your wife?"
Daniel looked away.
That silence answered everything.
Victoria suddenly walked toward the screen.
"Enough."
Nobody moved.
She looked directly at my father.
"You think you've won?"
My father raised an eyebrow.
"Have I not?"
Victoria smiled.
And for the first time that night, she looked confident again.
"There are things Emily doesn't know."
My blood ran cold.
My father watched her.
"Careful."
Victoria ignored him.
She looked at me.
"You think Daniel betrayed you."
She smiled.
"But you still don't know why."
I felt a chill.
"What does that mean?"
Victoria didn't answer.
Instead, she looked at Daniel.
And something passed between them.
A secret.
A shared fear.
Something bigger than the ring.
Bigger than the wedding.
Bigger than tonight.
"Tell her," Victoria said.
Daniel froze.
My heart started beating faster.
"Tell me what?"
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel reached into his jacket.
His hand was shaking.
He pulled out a small envelope.
An envelope I had never seen before.
"I was going to tell you after the wedding."
My face went pale.
"Tell me what?"
Daniel looked at me.
"I'm sorry."
I hated those words.
Because people always said them when the damage was already done.
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a document.
He handed it to me.
I looked down.
The first line made my entire body freeze.
It wasn't a DNA test.
It wasn't a medical record.
It was something else.
Something that explained why everyone had been fighting over my baby.
Something that made my father step forward instantly.
Because at the bottom of the page was a name.
May you like
A name that should have been impossible.
The biological father of my unborn child was listed as someone I had buried years ago.
