Chapter 3 - The Secret Hidden Behind My Husband's Silence

The photograph slipped from my fingers.
I stared at it.
Then I looked at Daniel.
And for the first time since I met him, I didn't recognize the man standing in front of me.
The picture showed Victoria outside St. Mary's Medical Center.
Standing beside her was a doctor.
A doctor I knew.
Dr. Andrew Collins.
The same doctor who had been monitoring my pregnancy for the last six months.
My stomach tightened.
No.
That couldn't be possible.
My father watched my face carefully.
"Emily."
I couldn't answer.
My eyes stayed fixed on Daniel.
Because the message on my phone was still burning into my mind.
Ask your husband about the baby.
Those six words had turned the entire night upside down.
Daniel noticed everyone looking at him.
"What?"
His voice cracked.
My father stepped closer.
"Your wife received a message."
Daniel looked confused.
"What message?"
I slowly lifted my phone.
His eyes moved across the screen.
The color drained from his face.
And that was when I knew.
He knew something.
Maybe not everything.
But something.
"Daniel," I whispered.
My voice felt different.
Colder.
"Why would someone tell me to ask you about our baby?"
The ballroom became silent again.
Everyone was watching.
Waiting.
Daniel opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Victoria immediately stepped forward.
"Emily, don't let someone manipulate you."
I turned toward her.
"Funny."
My voice shook.
"You were worried about manipulation after you destroyed my dress?"
Her expression hardened.
"You don't understand what you're doing."
"No."
I looked at the torn fabric hanging from my body.
"I understand exactly what happened."
I pointed at the screen showing the recording of her plan.
"You tried to ruin me."
Victoria looked away.
But Daniel still hadn't answered.
That hurt more.
Because Victoria was exactly who I expected her to be.
But Daniel...
Daniel was supposed to be different.
I walked toward him slowly.
"Tell me the truth."
He looked at me.
"Emily..."
"No."
I shook my head.
"Not tonight."
My voice became louder.
"Not after you watched them do this to me."
I touched the torn part of my gown.
"You don't get to say my name like everything is okay."
His face changed.
Guilt appeared.
Real guilt.
But guilt wasn't enough.
Not anymore.
"I need to know one thing."
I looked directly into his eyes.
"Is this baby yours?"
The entire room froze.
Someone gasped.
A glass fell somewhere behind us.
Daniel looked devastated.
"What?"
I swallowed.
"The message."
I held up my phone.
"Someone told me to ask you about the baby."
Daniel shook his head immediately.
"No."
But his reaction was too fast.
Too desperate.
My father noticed.
I noticed.
Everyone noticed.
"Emily, listen to me."
Daniel stepped forward.
I stepped back.
"No."
The word came out quietly.
But it stopped him.
Because he knew.
Something had broken between us.
My father placed himself between us.
"Daniel."
His voice was calm.
"Choose your next words carefully."
Daniel looked at him.
"I never cheated on Emily."
I wanted to believe him.
God, I wanted to.
But trust doesn't disappear because of one lie.
It disappears because of a thousand moments where someone chooses not to protect you.
I remembered every time Daniel defended Victoria.
Every dinner where I sat silently while his mother criticized me.
Every appointment where he said he was too busy to come.
Every night I cried alone while convincing myself things would get better.
Then I remembered tonight.
The dress.
The accusation.
The silence.
A person could make mistakes.
But Daniel had made a choice.
He chose them.
Robert suddenly interrupted.
"Mr. Carter."
Everyone looked toward him.
He was holding another document.
"There's something else you need to see."
Victoria's face changed.
Again.
Fear.
Not anger.
Fear.
"What is that?"
Robert didn't answer her.
He handed the document to my father.
My father read the first page.
Then the second.
His expression became darker.
"What is it?" I asked.
He looked at me.
And for a moment, I saw hesitation.
My father had always protected me from painful things.
But this time...
He knew I needed the truth.
"It's medical paperwork."
My heart dropped.
"What kind of paperwork?"
He looked at Daniel.
"Pregnancy records."
Daniel closed his eyes.
I felt like the floor moved beneath me.
"Why would you have my pregnancy records?"
I looked at Victoria.
She didn't answer.
That was enough.
My father turned to Robert.
"Explain."
Robert nodded.
"We discovered unauthorized access to Mrs. Carter's medical file three weeks ago."
My breathing stopped.
"Unauthorized?"
Robert looked at Daniel.
"Someone requested information about the baby's paternity testing."
The room erupted.
Guests whispered.
People moved away from Daniel.
My husband looked like he had been punched.
"I didn't do that."
Nobody responded.
Because nobody knew if he was telling the truth.
My father looked at the document again.
"There was a request for a DNA test."
My hand moved to my stomach.
"Why?"
Nobody answered.
Then Victoria spoke.
And her voice was completely different.
No arrogance.
No confidence.
Just desperation.
"Because we needed to know."
I turned toward her.
"Needed to know what?"
Victoria looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
"The truth."
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn't believe this was my life.
"You destroyed my wedding because you wanted the truth?"
Victoria's lips tightened.
"You don't understand."
"Then explain."
She looked at Daniel.
And Daniel looked terrified.
That was when I knew.
Whatever secret existed between them...
It involved him.
Not just his mother.
Not just his sister.
Him.
"Daniel."
I whispered his name.
He looked at me.
"Tell me."
His eyes filled with regret.
"I was going to."
"When?"
He didn't answer.
"When were you going to tell me?"
Still nothing.
My father stepped forward.
"You knew."
Daniel looked down.
And that was his confession.
A sound escaped from my throat.
Not a cry.
Not anger.
Just disbelief.
"You knew."
Daniel looked at me.
"Emily, please."
"No."
I backed away.
"You knew something was happening to me."
I pointed at my dress.
"You knew your family was planning this."
"No."
"You knew they were trying to destroy me."
"No."
His voice broke.
"I didn't know about tonight."
"But you knew something."
Silence.
The answer was there.
I didn't need him to say it.
Robert opened another folder.
"There is one more record."
My father took it.
He read it.
Then he looked at me.
"Emily..."
The way he said my name scared me.
"What?"
He slowly handed me the paper.
My hands trembled.
I read the first line.
Then the second.
Then I stopped.
Because at the bottom of the page was a signature.
A signature I recognized.
A signature belonging to the person who had been standing beside me every day.
The person I trusted with my life.
The person who had just watched me be humiliated.
The person who had known the truth all along.
I looked up.
Daniel was crying.
And then my phone received another message.
This time, it wasn't from an unknown number.
It was from someone saved in my contacts.
Someone who should never have been involved.
May you like
The message contained only one sentence.
"Your husband didn't just hide the truth. He helped create it."
