Chapter 5 - The Person Who Opened The Door

Someone was standing inside Sofia's bedroom.

For one second, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Alexander.

Not even the person standing near the window.

The only sound was Sofia's breathing.

Heavy.

Afraid.

Then Alexander stepped forward.

"Move away from her."

His voice was different.

Cold.

Controlled.

The person slowly turned.

And my heart stopped.

"Sofia?"

Her voice was barely a whisper.

Because the person standing in her room was someone she knew.

Someone who had hugged her on her wedding day.

Someone who had smiled beside her while she walked toward the altar.

Javier.

Sofia took a step backward.

"No."

Javier raised his hands.

"Please."

"How did you get in here?"

His face was pale.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Terrified.

"I came to explain."

Alexander immediately moved between them.

"You don't explain anything."

Javier looked at him.

"I didn't hurt her."

The room became silent.

Because those words were exactly what a guilty person would say.

I looked at Sofia.

She wasn't looking at Javier.

She was looking at the wedding ring on her finger.

The symbol she had believed in.

The promise she thought she had made.

Now it looked like a warning.

"You knew."

Her voice was quiet.

Javier swallowed.

"Sofia..."

"You knew."

She looked up.

"You knew what your mother was planning."

He didn't answer.

That was the answer.

Alexander moved closer.

"Why are you here?"

Javier looked at Sofia.

"Because I need to tell you the truth."

I almost laughed.

The truth.

Everyone suddenly wanted to tell the truth after destroying her life.

"You had your chance."

Sofia's voice cracked.

"At the hotel."

Javier looked down.

"I was scared."

Her expression changed.

"Scared?"

She repeated the word.

"You stood outside that door."

His eyes filled.

"I know."

"You heard me."

"I know."

"You heard them hurting me."

"I know."

"And you did nothing."

Javier closed his eyes.

"I thought my mother would stop."

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Because that was his excuse.

Not that he didn't know.

Not that he wasn't there.

He knew.

He heard.

And he waited.

Sofia's face changed.

Not into anger.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

"Get out."

Javier looked at her.

"Sofia, please."

"Get out."

"I can fix this."

"No."

She shook her head.

"You can't fix something you chose to destroy."

Detective Hill arrived twenty minutes later.

Javier sat in the living room under constant watch.

He looked nothing like the man from the wedding photos.

The man smiling beside Sofia.

The man everyone thought would protect her.

Now he looked small.

Afraid.

But I couldn't forget what he had done.

Fear didn't erase choices.

Detective Hill placed documents on the table.

"We need a statement."

Sofia looked at him.

"From Javier?"

The detective nodded.

"And from you."

Sofia looked down.

For a moment, I thought she would refuse.

I thought she would break.

But she didn't.

She sat straighter.

"I'll tell you everything."

Alexander looked at her.

"Sofia."

She looked at him.

"No."

Her voice was calm.

"I spent my whole life with people deciding what I could handle."

She looked at the detective.

"I'm done being protected from the truth."

Nobody spoke.

Because that was the moment my daughter changed.

Not because the pain disappeared.

Because she stopped letting pain control her.

Javier's statement took three hours.

Three hours of listening to the details.

Three hours of hearing how carefully everything had been arranged.

The wedding venue.

The hotel suite.

The documents.

The pressure.

The people involved.

But there was one thing nobody expected.

Javier admitted something that changed everything.

"Carmen didn't start this."

Detective Hill looked up.

"Explain."

Javier rubbed his face.

"My mother was following orders."

Alexander's expression hardened.

"Whose orders?"

Javier hesitated.

Then he said:

"I don't know."

Nobody believed him.

"You're telling us your mother planned an attack on your wife, but you don't know who was behind it?"

Javier looked at Sofia.

"I only knew she was supposed to get the condo."

Sofia's face became cold.

"Supposed to?"

Javier looked away.

"Yes."

"What happens if I refused?"

He didn't answer.

Sofia leaned forward.

"What happens if I refused?"

Javier whispered:

"Then they would move to the next step."

My stomach dropped.

"What next step?"

Javier looked terrified.

"Making you disappear."

The room went silent.

After Javier was taken away for further questioning, Sofia sat alone in the living room.

The house felt different.

Not safer.

Just quieter.

Alexander sat across from her.

"You should sleep."

She looked at him.

"I don't think I can."

"I understand."

"No, Dad."

Her voice softened.

"You don't."

He looked hurt.

"I know I failed you."

She shook her head.

"That's not what I mean."

She looked toward the window.

"I don't know who I can trust anymore."

That sentence hurt more than anything.

Because Sofia had always trusted people.

She believed words.

Promises.

Love.

And someone had used that against her.

Alexander moved closer.

"Then trust me."

She looked at him.

"I want to."

A pause.

"But I don't know how."

Alexander nodded slowly.

"I understand."

And for the first time, I saw something I never expected.

My daughter wasn't rejecting him.

She was giving him the hardest thing possible.

A chance to earn his place back.

The next morning, Detective Hill called.

His voice was serious.

"We found something."

Alexander and I met him at his office.

Sofia came with us.

She refused to stay behind.

The detective placed a file on the table.

"This was recovered from Javier's email."

Inside were dozens of messages.

Between Javier.

Carmen.

And another person.

Someone whose name had been hidden.

"Who is this?"

Sofia asked.

The detective turned the screen.

A single name appeared.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that name.

Alexander knew it too.

His face became completely still.

"Impossible."

I looked at him.

"Who is it?"

He didn't answer.

The detective did.

"Someone who has been close to your family for years."

Sofia looked confused.

"Who?"

The detective slowly turned the monitor toward us.

And the name on the screen appeared.

The person who had given Carmen information about Sofia.

The person who had known about the condo.

The person who had helped create the perfect trap.

May you like

Was not a stranger.

It was someone inside our home.
