Chapter 2 - The Father Who Came Back With A Secret

Alexander did not speak for almost a minute.

He just sat there beside Sofia.

Holding her hand.

Looking at the bruises on his daughter's skin like he was trying to understand how the world had allowed this to happen.

I had seen Alexander angry before.

Years ago.

Before everything fell apart.

But this was different.

This wasn't anger.

This was the silence before a storm.

"Who did this?"

His voice was low.

Too low.

Sofia looked away.

"Does it matter?"

Alexander looked at her.

And something in his expression broke.

"Does it matter?"

He repeated the words softly.

"My daughter came home wearing a wedding dress covered in blood."

His voice cracked.

"And you are asking if it matters?"

Sofia closed her eyes.

I watched her.

My daughter had always been strong.

Even as a child.

When she fell, she got back up.

When people disappointed her, she found a way to move forward.

But tonight...

Tonight she looked exhausted.

Like someone had taken years away from her in a single night.

Alexander carefully touched her hand.

Not the bruises.

Not the injuries.

Just her hand.

Like he was afraid she would disappear.

"I should have been there."

Sofia opened her eyes.

"Dad..."

"No."

He shook his head.

"I should have been there."

The room became quiet.

I had heard Alexander apologize many times in my imagination.

During the years he was gone.

During the nights when Sofia asked why her father never called.

During the moments when I had to pretend I wasn't angry.

But hearing it now felt different.

Because this time, he wasn't apologizing for leaving.

He was apologizing for failing.

"I thought staying away would protect you."

Sofia stared at him.

"Protect me from what?"

Alexander looked down.

And for the first time that night...

I saw fear on his face.

Not fear for himself.

Fear because he knew something I didn't.

"Alexander."

He looked at me.

"What aren't you telling us?"

His jaw tightened.

"I need to make sure Sofia is safe first."

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because after twelve years, he was still doing the same thing.

Keeping secrets.

Making decisions alone.

"I spent years raising her without you."

My voice became sharper.

"Don't come back into this house and start hiding things again."

Alexander looked at me.

And for a moment, neither of us moved.

Because we both knew I was right.

He lowered his eyes.

"You deserve the truth."

Sofia looked between us.

"What truth?"

Alexander took a breath.

Then he looked at her wedding ring.

"The reason I left."

The room changed.

I felt it immediately.

Sofia slowly sat up.

"You mean you didn't leave because you wanted to?"

Alexander looked devastated.

"No."

"Then why?"

He didn't answer immediately.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because Alexander was not a man who searched for words.

He was a man who always knew what to say.

"I was investigating something."

Sofia frowned.

"Investigating?"

He nodded.

"Before I disappeared, I discovered that certain people were targeting families with valuable assets."

I looked at him.

"What does that have to do with us?"

His eyes moved to Sofia.

"Everything."

Sofia became still.

Alexander continued.

"I found evidence that people were using marriages, legal agreements, and family pressure to take control of property."

My stomach tightened.

The condo.

Carmen.

Javier.

Suddenly, everything connected.

"You knew?"

I whispered.

"You knew someone might try to take Sofia's condo?"

Alexander looked away.

"I suspected."

The word hurt.

"You suspected?"

My voice rose.

"And you let her marry him?"

"No."

His answer was immediate.

"I didn't know Javier was involved."

He looked at Sofia.

"But I knew someone was watching our family."

Sofia pulled the blanket tighter around herself.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Alexander closed his eyes.

Because that was the question he had been avoiding.

"Because I thought keeping distance would keep you invisible."

Sofia stared at him.

"And instead?"

His silence answered.

Instead, they found her anyway.

I walked to the window.

The same window where Carmen had once admired my daughter's home.

The same window where I should have trusted my instincts.

"When did you know something was wrong?"

I asked.

Alexander looked at me.

"Three weeks ago."

I turned.

"What?"

"I received information that Javier's family had been looking into Sofia's finances."

Sofia looked shocked.

"Then why didn't you warn me?"

Alexander swallowed.

"Because I didn't know who was giving them information."

The room froze.

"What do you mean?"

Alexander reached into his jacket.

He removed a small black folder.

I had seen that folder before.

Years ago.

The same type of folder he carried when he worked.

The same folder that had become a symbol of everything he refused to explain.

He placed it on the table.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Names.

Sofia looked at them.

Her face changed.

"That's Javier."

Alexander nodded.

"And Carmen."

I picked up one of the papers.

It was a financial report.

My eyes moved down the page.

Then stopped.

There was a signature.

A name.

Someone who had access to Sofia's private information.

Someone who had helped prepare the transfer papers.

"Where did you get this?"

I asked.

Alexander didn't answer.

"Sofia."

She looked at him.

"Before tonight, did Javier ever ask you about your condo?"

Her expression changed.

Slowly.

Painfully.

"Not directly."

"What does that mean?"

She looked down.

"He asked questions."

"What kind of questions?"

She hesitated.

"How much I paid in taxes."

My hands tightened.

"What else?"

"He asked if I planned to keep it after marriage."

Alexander looked at me.

"And what did you say?"

Sofia whispered:

"I told him it was mine."

The silence afterward was heavy.

Because that was when we all understood.

The wedding wasn't the beginning.

It was the final step.

They had been planning this before she ever walked down the aisle.

Alexander stood.

His entire posture changed.

The sadness was still there.

But something else replaced it.

The person he had been before he left.

The man who knew how to fight.

"I need to go."

Sofia grabbed his sleeve.

"No."

He looked at her.

"Dad."

The word stopped him.

"I just got you back."

Alexander looked at his daughter.

And I saw the pain on his face.

"I know."

He sat back down.

"I'm not leaving you again."

For the first time that night, Sofia believed him.

But I didn't.

Not because I thought he would abandon her.

Because I knew Alexander.

And I knew that look.

He had found something.

Something dangerous.

Something he wasn't telling us.

A few hours later, after Sofia finally fell asleep, Alexander and I sat across from each other in the kitchen.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

"You never told me the truth."

I said.

He looked at his hands.

"I was trying to keep you safe."

"You always say that."

"I know."

"Do you know what it did to Sofia?"

His eyes filled.

"Yes."

"Do you know how many nights she cried because she thought you didn't care?"

His voice broke.

"Yes."

I looked away.

"I hated you for leaving."

"I know."

"But I hated myself more because part of me still hoped you would come back."

Alexander looked at me.

"I wanted to."

"Then why didn't you?"

He took a long breath.

"Because the last person who helped me investigate this disappeared."

I froze.

"What?"

He nodded.

"He was found three days after sending me evidence."

My heart started racing.

"What happened to him?"

Alexander looked toward the hallway where Sofia was sleeping.

"He was killed."

The kitchen suddenly felt colder.

I whispered:

"Alexander..."

He reached into the folder again.

This time, he removed an envelope.

"This was delivered to me yesterday."

I stared at it.

"Yesterday?"

He nodded.

"Before Sofia's wedding."

My stomach dropped.

"Why didn't you come sooner?"

His eyes met mine.

"Because the message wasn't for me."

Slowly, he turned the envelope around.

My blood went cold.

Because written across the front were two words.

Sofia Reed.

Alexander opened his mouth.

But before he could say anything...

The lights in the house suddenly went out.

May you like

And from upstairs...

Sofia screamed.
