Chapter 4 - The Night My Husband’s Secret Returned

The photograph stayed on Sofia’s phone screen for almost a minute.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody spoke.

Because sometimes a picture doesn't just show the past.

Sometimes it opens a door you spent years trying to keep closed.

Alexander stood across the room.

His face had changed.

Not because he was surprised.

Because he wasn't.

And that was the part that hurt the most.

He knew.

"Alexander."

My voice sounded different.

Even to me.

"What is this?"

He looked at the picture.

Then at Sofia.

Then finally at me.

"I can explain."

Those four words.

I hated those words.

Because every person who had ever hurt us had used them.

Javier.

Carmen.

Now him.

Sofia slowly stood.

"Dad."

Alexander looked at her.

"Why were you with her?"

He didn't answer.

That silence destroyed something inside her.

Because a person can survive a painful truth.

But waiting for someone you love to tell it...

That is something else.

"I asked you a question."

Her voice shook.

"Why were you standing with Carmen Robles the night you left?"

Alexander lowered his eyes.

And for the first time since he came back...

He looked guilty.

Not afraid.

Guilty.

I stepped between them.

"No."

He looked at me.

"You don't get to do this again."

His expression tightened.

"Elena."

"No."

I shook my head.

"Twelve years ago, you disappeared."

My voice became louder.

"You let me explain to our daughter why her father wasn't there."

"You let her believe she wasn't important enough."

"Now you come back after she is hurt, and the first thing we discover is that you were connected to the same woman who destroyed her life?"

Alexander closed his eyes.

"I never wanted this."

Sofia laughed softly.

But there was no happiness in it.

"Nobody ever wants this."

She looked at him.

"That's what everyone says after they hurt you."

The words hit him.

And I saw it.

The realization.

Alexander finally understood that returning home did not erase what happened.

It only brought the questions back.

He sat down at the kitchen table.

The same table where Sofia used to do homework.

The same table where Alexander taught her how to ride a bicycle using a tiny piece of paper with instructions because he was afraid she would fall.

The same table where we had once been a family.

Now it held a photograph that had shattered everything again.

"I met Carmen because of the investigation."

Alexander finally spoke.

Sofia crossed her arms.

"Then why were you hiding it?"

"Because I didn't trust anyone."

"You didn't trust me?"

His eyes moved to her.

"I was trying to protect you."

Her expression changed.

"Stop saying that."

The room became silent.

"Stop saying you were protecting me."

She wiped her eyes.

"Every time someone hurts me, they say they were protecting me."

Alexander looked down.

"I know."

"No, you don't."

Her voice broke.

"You don't know what it feels like to have everyone make decisions about your life without asking you."

I looked at Sofia.

Because she was right.

That was the one thing everyone had done.

They had decided for her.

Javier decided she would give up her home.

Carmen decided she could be controlled.

Alexander decided she needed to be left behind.

Even I...

I had decided she was better off without knowing the full truth.

Maybe that was the hardest thing to admit.

Everyone had tried to protect Sofia.

And everyone had made her feel powerless.

"What was Carmen doing with you?"

I asked.

Alexander looked at me.

"She was giving me information."

"About what?"

"The people behind Javier's family."

Sofia froze.

"Javier?"

Alexander nodded.

"Carmen was not the beginning."

"What does that mean?"

He reached for the folder from the previous night.

He opened it.

Inside were more documents.

This time, there were names.

Companies.

Financial records.

I looked closer.

Then I saw it.

Javier's name.

Not as a husband.

As a partner.

"He was involved?"

Alexander nodded.

"Javier was never planning to marry Sofia because he loved her."

Sofia covered her mouth.

"No."

"I'm sorry."

"No."

She stepped back.

"No, because I knew him."

Alexander looked at her.

"I know you did."

"He wasn't like that."

His eyes filled.

"I wanted to believe that too."

That sentence hurt.

Because Alexander understood something Sofia didn't want to accept.

The person she loved had been pretending.

Later that night, Detective Hill returned.

He brought documents from the hospital report.

And another piece of information.

Something that made the entire situation darker.

"We found evidence that the attack was planned before the wedding."

Sofia stared at him.

"How?"

The detective placed a folder on the table.

"Your husband booked the hotel suite six months ago."

Sofia frowned.

"That's normal."

"Not this suite."

He opened the folder.

"The room was registered under a private account connected to Carmen Robles."

My stomach tightened.

"Why would Javier do that?"

The detective looked at Sofia.

"Because he wasn't planning a honeymoon."

Nobody spoke.

The detective continued.

"He was planning a transfer."

Sofia looked at the papers.

The room.

The documents.

The signatures.

Everything.

Her hands started shaking.

"I almost signed."

I grabbed her hand.

"But you didn't."

She looked at me.

"I almost did."

"No."

I held her tighter.

"You survived."

But Sofia wasn't looking at me.

She was looking at the papers.

Because she realized something.

"They knew."

Her voice was quiet.

"They knew I would refuse."

Alexander looked at her.

"What?"

"They knew."

She looked up.

"They knew I wouldn't give them the condo."

The room went silent.

"So why did they do this?"

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was terrifying.

They didn't expect her to agree.

They expected her to disappear.

That evening, Alexander and I finally had the conversation we avoided.

After Sofia went upstairs, I found him standing alone in the backyard.

Looking at the place where he used to teach Sofia how to throw a baseball.

"You loved her."

He didn't turn around.

"I still do."

"Then why?"

His shoulders lowered.

"Because I found out Carmen was connected to something bigger."

I waited.

"Something involving my past."

"What past?"

Alexander stayed quiet.

Then he said:

"The reason I disappeared."

I felt my heart sink.

"Tell me."

He turned.

"When I was working overseas, I discovered a group that was moving money through fake ownership transfers."

"Property?"

"Families."

The word confused me.

"Families?"

He nodded.

"They would identify people with valuable assets."

"Then?"

"They would create relationships."

My blood went cold.

"Relationships?"

"Marriages."

The world seemed to stop.

"You think Javier was sent to Sofia?"

Alexander looked away.

"I don't think."

He paused.

"I know."

I covered my mouth.

Because suddenly everything became clear.

The questions about the condo.

The interest in Sofia's finances.

The perfect wedding.

The pressure.

It was never about love.

It was about ownership.

"They targeted our daughter."

Alexander nodded.

"And someone inside helped them."

"Who?"

He didn't answer.

Because his phone suddenly vibrated.

Both of us looked down.

Unknown number.

A message.

Alexander opened it.

And his face changed.

"What?"

He handed me the phone.

The message contained only one sentence.

"You still haven't told Elena who gave Carmen Sofia's information."

I looked at Alexander.

"Who gave it?"

He didn't speak.

Another message arrived.

This time with a photograph.

A photograph taken inside our house.

My hands went cold.

Because the picture showed Sofia sleeping on the sofa after she came home.

Taken from inside the room.

Someone had been there.

Watching her.

And beneath the photo was one final message.

"Ask your daughter who she trusted before the wedding."

Alexander immediately turned toward the stairs.

"Sofia."

We ran.

But when we reached her bedroom door...

May you like

It was already open.

And someone was standing inside.
