Chapter 6 - The Envelope My Father Feared

The door unlocked behind us.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

For a few seconds, the entire room froze.

The sound was small.

Just the click of the lock.

But after everything we had discovered, even the smallest sound felt like a warning.

Michael immediately stepped between me and the entrance.

"Stay back."

My heart was racing.

"Who is it?"

He didn't answer.

My mother looked terrified.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

And that told me something.

She knew who could be standing outside.

The door opened slowly.

A shadow appeared in the hallway.

Then a voice.

"Celeste."

My blood turned cold.

Because I knew that voice.

My father.

Richard Monroe.

The man who had abandoned me at my wedding.

The man who had spent my entire life protecting Veronica.

The man who had just warned me not to open an envelope he believed I should never see.

He stepped into the room.

His expression was different from the man who left my wedding.

There was no anger.

No confidence.

Only fear.

His eyes moved from me.

To Michael.

Then to the envelope on the table.

And the moment he saw it, his face changed.

"Where did you get that?"

Nobody answered.

My father took another step forward.

"Michael."

The way he said his name wasn't like seeing an old friend.

It was like seeing a ghost.

"You should have stayed away."

Michael laughed quietly.

"You said that eight years ago."

My father looked at him.

"I gave you a chance."

"No."

Michael's voice hardened.

"You gave me a threat."

My father looked back at me.

"Celeste, you don't understand what's happening."

I almost smiled.

Because those words had followed me my entire life.

You don't understand.

You don't know the whole story.

You need to trust us.

But I was done trusting people who used confusion as a weapon.

"I understand enough."

My father shook his head.

"No, you don't."

He looked at the envelope.

"That file will destroy this family."

I stared at him.

"You mean it will expose this family."

His jaw tightened.

"Your sister made mistakes."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Even now.

Even after everything.

He was still protecting her.

"Is that what you call it?"

My voice was calm.

Because something inside me had changed.

"I spent years thinking Veronica was just spoiled."

I looked at him.

"But she wasn't just spoiled, was she?"

My father stayed silent.

"She was protected."

His eyes moved away.

That was enough.

Michael walked toward the table.

"You need to know what happened, Celeste."

My father stepped forward.

"No."

Michael looked at him.

"She deserves the truth."

My father shook his head.

"You don't know what the truth will do."

I looked at him.

"What are you afraid of?"

Silence.

That was the first time I saw it.

The thing my father had hidden behind his entire life.

Fear.

Not for Veronica.

Not for himself.

For what would happen if I knew.

I picked up the envelope.

My father's face changed immediately.

"Celeste."

I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Bank records.

Emails.

Photographs.

And one handwritten letter.

The handwriting was familiar.

My father's.

I unfolded it.

The first line made my stomach drop.

"To whoever finds this, I failed my daughter."

I looked up.

My father looked away.

Michael whispered:

"He wrote that years ago."

I continued reading.

"I spent my life believing protecting my family meant hiding their mistakes. I was wrong."

My hands trembled.

Because those words weren't from the man standing in front of me.

They were from the man he used to be.

The man who knew he had done something unforgivable.

The letter continued.

"Veronica was never the person everyone believed she was."

I stopped.

My father closed his eyes.

"Don't."

I looked at him.

"No."

My voice was quiet.

"But I'm going to."

I kept reading.

The documents revealed something I never expected.

Veronica hadn't just stolen money.

She had been manipulating people.

Using secrets.

Creating problems.

Then positioning herself as the victim when things fell apart.

But one page made everything stop.

A police report.

A date.

Eight years ago.

The night Michael disappeared.

I stared at it.

"What is this?"

Michael looked down.

"The night I left."

I read the report.

A witness statement.

A complaint.

A name.

Veronica Monroe.

My breathing became shallow.

"She reported you?"

Michael nodded.

"She told everyone I threatened her."

My eyes widened.

"What?"

"I never touched her."

My father spoke quietly.

"Michael was angry."

I turned toward him.

"You believed her."

He looked ashamed.

"I was trying to protect Veronica."

I laughed.

A painful laugh.

"Of course."

My father looked at me.

"Celeste..."

"No."

I held up the report.

"You destroyed someone's life because you believed her."

"I thought I was doing what was right."

"Right?"

I stepped closer.

"You let me believe he abandoned me."

My father didn't answer.

"You let me hate him."

His eyes filled slightly.

"I made mistakes."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You made choices."

The room became silent.

Then my phone buzzed.

Everyone looked at it.

Another message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

A photograph appeared.

It showed Veronica.

Standing outside a building.

With someone beside her.

I recognized him immediately.

My father recognized him too.

His face went pale.

Because the person standing next to Veronica wasn't a stranger.

It was someone who had been helping her from the beginning.

Someone none of us expected.

My mother covered her mouth.

Michael whispered:

"That's impossible."

I looked at the photo.

Then at my father.

"Who is that?"

My father didn't answer.

He couldn't.

Because the person in the picture was the one person who knew every secret in our family.

The person who had helped Veronica create the lie.

The person who had been controlling everything from the shadows.

My phone buzzed again.

One final message appeared.

"Ask your father why he really left your wedding."

I looked up.

My father stepped backward.

May you like

Because he knew the answer.

And then someone knocked on the front door.
