Chapter 2 - The Call That Changed Everything

My father's name appeared on Caleb's phone screen.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

The reception hall was almost empty now.

The flowers that had surrounded us hours earlier were beginning to wilt.

The candles that had made the room feel magical were burning lower.

And there I was, sitting across from my husband on the night of our wedding, staring at the name of the man who had abandoned me before I even reached the altar.

Dad.

I had spent my entire life waiting for that name to mean something different.

I had wanted it to mean safety.

Protection.

Love.

But tonight, it only meant one thing.

Another unanswered question.

Caleb looked at me.

"Do you want me to answer?"

I didn't know what to say.

A part of me wanted to grab the phone and demand an explanation.

Another part of me was tired.

Tired of chasing answers from people who had never cared enough to give them.

The phone continued vibrating between us.

Finally, I nodded.

Caleb pressed the button.

"Hello?"

Silence.

Then my father's voice came through.

"Where is Celeste?"

My chest tightened.

Not hello.

Not congratulations.

Not I'm sorry.

Just a question.

Where is Celeste?

Caleb glanced at me.

"I'm with her."

Another pause.

Then my father lowered his voice.

"I need to talk to her."

I reached for the phone.

Caleb handed it to me.

"Dad?"

The silence on the other end lasted several seconds.

Then I heard him breathe.

"Celeste."

I closed my eyes.

That one word almost made me forget everything.

Because no matter how old you become, some part of you still wants your father to sound like your father.

"I don't understand what happened," he said.

I looked around the empty reception hall.

"You don't understand?"

"Your sister called me."

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn't believe he still believed that was enough.

"She called you five minutes before my wedding."

"She said she was hurt."

"Was she?"

Silence.

That was all I needed.

"Dad."

My voice became steadier.

"Was Veronica in the hospital?"

"I..."

He stopped.

And that hesitation hurt more than any answer.

"You don't know?"

"I was told she needed me."

"Did you check?"

Another silence.

I looked at Caleb.

He was watching me carefully.

Not interrupting.

Just listening.

"I thought she was in danger," my father finally said.

"You thought."

My voice cracked slightly.

"You didn't even call me."

"I was going to."

"When?"

"After I made sure she was okay."

I stared at the wedding ring on my finger.

The ring Caleb had placed there while my own father was driving away.

"Do you know what I felt when I walked down that aisle?"

My father didn't answer.

"I felt like I was twelve years old again."

His breathing changed.

"Celeste..."

"No. Let me finish."

For the first time in my life, I didn't apologize for speaking.

"I spent years convincing myself you didn't choose Veronica over me. I told myself there were reasons. I told myself you were busy. I told myself I was stronger."

My hand tightened around the phone.

"But today you proved me wrong."

"Celeste, that's not fair."

The words came quickly.

Almost automatically.

And somehow, that made everything worse.

"Not fair?"

I looked at Caleb.

He lowered his eyes.

Because even he understood.

"I stood at the door waiting for you."

My voice became quieter.

"And you were gone."

My father didn't respond.

Then he said something I never expected.

"Your sister needed me more."

The words landed harder than I thought they would.

Because there it was.

The truth.

Not hidden.

Not disguised.

Not softened.

He had finally said it.

I didn't cry.

I didn't yell.

I just felt something inside me become very still.

"Thank you."

My father sounded confused.

"What?"

"Thank you for finally saying it."

"Celeste..."

"I spent years wondering if I was imagining it."

I looked at my reflection in the dark window beside me.

"I wasn't."

I ended the call.

For several seconds, I sat there silently.

Caleb reached across the table and held my hand.

"You okay?"

I nodded.

"No."

He gave a small sad smile.

"That's an honest answer."

I looked at him.

"Why didn't you tell me sooner that something was wrong?"

He glanced at the documents on the table.

"The hospital record."

My eyes moved toward the papers.

"You were right."

Caleb picked them up.

"I checked the emergency dispatch information."

He pointed to the time.

"Your sister's call came in at 4:47."

"Okay."

"Your father left the wedding venue at 4:52."

I nodded slowly.

"And?"

Caleb looked at me.

"Veronica's hospital registration time was 6:18."

I froze.

"That's over an hour later."

"Exactly."

My stomach twisted.

"Maybe she drove herself there."

"Maybe."

But the way he said it told me he didn't believe that.

"What else?"

Caleb took out another piece of paper.

"A security report."

I frowned.

"From where?"

"The wedding venue."

My heart began beating faster.

"Why would there be a security report?"

"Because your father didn't just leave."

Caleb pushed the paper toward me.

"He took the car."

I looked at the report.

A photograph was attached.

The vintage car leaving the parking lot.

My father's hands on the wheel.

The timestamp.

4:54 PM.

But something else caught my attention.

A second vehicle.

Parked near the exit.

A black SUV.

I looked closer.

"Who is that?"

Caleb shook his head.

"I don't know yet."

I felt cold.

"Someone was waiting for him?"

"Maybe."

"Or someone was waiting for me."

Neither of us spoke.

Because suddenly, the story was becoming bigger.

This wasn't just about my father choosing my sister.

It was about timing.

Planning.

Someone had known exactly when to make that call.

Someone knew my wedding would be destroyed if my father disappeared.

The next morning, I woke up before sunrise.

For years, I had started my days by trying to keep everyone happy.

Checking messages.

Fixing problems.

Avoiding conflict.

But that morning was different.

I walked into my kitchen wearing Caleb's shirt, carrying the folder of evidence we had collected.

I placed everything on the table.

The phone records.

The hospital information.

The security footage.

The timeline.

For the first time, I wasn't trying to understand my family.

I was trying to understand the truth.

Caleb came downstairs and stopped when he saw me.

"You didn't sleep."

I shook my head.

"No."

He walked closer.

"What are you thinking?"

I looked at the evidence.

"I'm thinking about every time Veronica needed something."

Caleb stayed quiet.

"And every time everyone believed her without asking questions."

I picked up the hospital document.

"She knew exactly what to say."

"Celeste..."

"She knew Dad would leave."

My voice became quieter.

"She knew he wouldn't question her."

Caleb sat beside me.

"Then we find out why."

I looked at him.

"How?"

He opened his laptop.

"I made another call last night."

My eyebrows raised.

"To who?"

He turned the screen toward me.

An email confirmation appeared.

Medical records request.

I stared.

"Caleb..."

"I contacted someone I know at the hospital."

My heart started racing.

"Can they tell us what happened?"

"Not everything."

He paused.

"But they can confirm whether Veronica was ever treated."

I swallowed.

"And?"

Caleb looked at the screen.

"The response came in five minutes ago."

He clicked the message.

A single sentence appeared.

My hands went cold.

Because the hospital had no record of Veronica Monroe.

But underneath that sentence was another line.

A name.

A name that made Caleb slowly turn the laptop toward me.

May you like

Because it belonged to the person who had helped create the entire lie...

And it was someone I knew.
