Chapter 3 - The Memory Card That Changed Everything

The lights went out.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Three seconds was enough time for fear to enter a room.
The luxury restaurant that had been filled with wealthy conversations and quiet music became a place where everyone held their breath.
Sadie stood frozen.
She could not see Roman.
She could not see Daniel.
She could only hear the sound of her own heartbeat.
Then someone grabbed her wrist.
She almost screamed.
But a familiar voice whispered:
"It's me."
Roman.
He pulled her behind him immediately.
The darkness disappeared when emergency lights flickered on.
The restaurant returned in pieces.
The frightened guests.
The broken glass.
The abandoned tables.
And Daniel standing exactly where he had been.
Except the memory card was gone.
Sadie's eyes moved toward the table.
Nothing.
The small black card had disappeared.
"Where is it?"
Her voice was barely audible.
Daniel looked around.
Confusion appeared on his face.
"I didn't take it."
Roman stared at him.
"Then who did?"
Nobody answered.
Because everyone in the restaurant was looking at the same thing.
The empty chair near the window.
Someone had been sitting there.
Someone who was gone.
Sadie felt cold.
Not because of the missing memory card.
Because she understood something.
Someone had been watching them.
Someone had been waiting for the moment they finally came together.
Roman noticed her expression.
"What are you thinking?"
She looked at the empty chair.
"Someone knew we would be here."
The words changed everything.
Daniel looked at Roman.
"She can't stay here."
Roman's eyes narrowed.
"You don't get to decide that."
Daniel stepped closer.
"You still don't understand."
Roman's expression hardened.
"Understand what?"
Daniel looked at Sadie.
"The person who made Nora disappear three years ago wasn't trying to hide her."
Sadie's breathing became slower.
"What do you mean?"
Daniel swallowed.
"They were trying to protect her."
Roman looked angry.
"Protect her from what?"
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
That hesitation told Sadie everything.
There was something bigger.
Something everyone knew except her.
She looked between them.
"Both of you knew something."
Neither man responded.
Her voice became stronger.
"Both of you knew."
Roman looked away.
Daniel lowered his head.
And that hurt more than any confession.
Because silence was an answer.
Three years ago, she had run because she believed nobody would tell her the truth.
Now she was standing between two men who clearly knew more than they admitted.
"What happened the night I left?"
Roman finally spoke.
"I was supposed to meet you."
Sadie looked at him.
"You never came."
His jaw tightened.
"I did."
The words stopped her.
"What?"
Roman took a breath.
"I was there."
She shook her head.
"No."
"I was there, Nora."
"That's impossible."
"You left before I arrived."
The memory hit her.
The airport.
The empty waiting area.
The message telling her Roman was coming.
The fear.
The decision to leave.
She had always believed he abandoned her.
But what if...
What if he never knew she left?
Sadie stepped back.
"Who sent me that message?"
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel answered.
"I did."
Everything stopped.
Sadie stared at him.
Her own brother.
The person she trusted more than anyone.
"You?"
Daniel looked ashamed.
"I had no choice."
Roman immediately moved toward him.
"You always had a choice."
Daniel looked at Roman.
"You think I wanted to do it?"
"Then why?"
Daniel looked at Sadie.
And for the first time, she saw real fear in his eyes.
"Because they threatened you."
Sadie's expression changed.
"Who?"
Daniel looked toward the restaurant windows.
At the city outside.
"The people who were trying to destroy Roman."
Roman laughed once.
But there was no humor.
"People always want to destroy me."
Daniel shook his head.
"Not like this."
The room became silent again.
Daniel continued.
"They weren't trying to take your money."
Roman watched him.
"They weren't trying to hurt your business."
Sadie whispered:
"What were they trying to do?"
Daniel looked directly at her.
"They wanted you."
The answer felt impossible.
Sadie crossed her arms.
"Why?"
Daniel looked down.
"Because you knew something."
"What?"
He hesitated.
Then said:
"The truth about Roman's past."
Roman's expression changed immediately.
Sadie noticed.
And that was the moment she knew.
There was a secret.
A secret even Roman was afraid of.
She turned toward him.
"What is he talking about?"
Roman didn't answer.
"Roman."
His silence made her angry.
"You brought me back into this because you wanted me to trust you, but you still won't tell me the truth?"
Roman looked at her.
"I was trying to protect you."
She shook her head.
"No."
Her voice cracked.
"You were trying to protect yourself."
That sentence hurt him.
She saw it.
For a moment, Roman wasn't the powerful businessman everyone feared.
He was just a man who had lost something.
But she couldn't let that distract her.
Not anymore.
Daniel reached into his pocket.
Roman immediately reacted.
"Slowly."
Daniel stopped.
He pulled out his phone.
Not a weapon.
A video.
"I couldn't give you the memory card."
Sadie looked confused.
"Why?"
"Because whoever took it knew I had it."
Daniel pressed play.
The screen showed a dark room.
A woman sitting in a chair.
Sadie's face changed.
She recognized the voice before she saw the face.
Her mother.
But that was impossible.
Her mother had been dead for eight years.
The video was old.
The quality was poor.
But the voice was clear.
"Nora, if you are watching this..."
Sadie's hand covered her mouth.
The woman on the screen continued.
"I need you to understand something."
The video shook slightly.
Like whoever recorded it was afraid.
"Roman did not destroy your life."
Sadie looked at Roman.
He looked just as shocked.
The woman continued.
"He was trying to stop them."
Daniel looked at Sadie.
"Listen carefully."
The video continued.
"Your brother will tell you he had no choice."
Daniel's face changed.
"But he did."
Sadie's eyes moved slowly toward Daniel.
The video paused.
Then her mother's voice said:
"He chose the people who wanted you gone."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Sadie felt betrayed all over again.
"No."
Daniel whispered:
"Nora..."
She stepped away.
"Don't call me that."
The pain on his face was immediate.
But she didn't care.
Not yet.
She looked at Roman.
"What else don't I know?"
Roman remained silent.
Then his phone vibrated.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
He checked the screen.
And the color disappeared from his face.
Sadie noticed.
"What?"
Roman didn't answer.
He turned the phone toward her.
A message.
From an unknown number.
One picture.
Sadie looked at it.
And her entire body went cold.
It was a photo of her.
Taken that morning.
Inside her apartment.
Someone had been standing in her home.
The message below contained only five words:
"She was never alone."
Sadie looked up.
But Roman was already staring toward the restaurant entrance.
May you like
Because the doors had slowly opened.
And the person standing outside was holding another photograph of Nora...
