Chapter 1 - The Woman Who Disappeared

A waitress dropped a tray in the middle of a luxury restaurant and whispered: "Please... don't let him see me."

When Roman arrived, he found a broken wine bottle beside the waitress he had searched for three years. But one tiny detail caught his attention: The old scar on her hand was the same one Nora had. Roman suddenly realized she was never gone.

Friday nights at Lombardi’s were never quiet.

The restaurant was designed to make people feel powerful.

Crystal chandeliers hung above expensive tables. Waiters moved like shadows between wealthy guests. Conversations about investments, private deals, and family names blended with the sound of silverware touching porcelain plates.

Nobody came there just to eat.

They came to be seen.

Sadie knew that better than anyone.

That was why she always kept her head down.

For three years, she had mastered the art of disappearing.

She learned how to walk without making noise.

She learned how to smile without showing emotion.

She learned how to become someone nobody remembered.

Because being forgotten meant being safe.

Her black shoes carried her across the polished marble floor while she balanced a tray filled with expensive dishes.

Three plates.

One bottle of wine.

A dozen reasons to be careful.

She had learned long ago that one mistake could change everything.

And she had already made the biggest mistake of her life.

She had loved Roman.

The man everyone feared.

The man who could enter a room and make conversations stop.

The man who never had to raise his voice because people listened before he even spoke.

But the world never knew the Roman she knew.

They saw power.

They saw control.

They saw a man surrounded by secrets.

She saw the man who once held her hand during the darkest night of her life and promised nobody would ever hurt her.

That was the problem.

She believed him.

Until the night she discovered the truth.

The night she ran.

The night Nora disappeared.

Now she was Sadie.

A waitress.

A stranger.

Someone with a completely different life.

At least that was what she believed.

Until the restaurant doors opened.

The cold air from outside moved through the room.

The music stopped.

Not immediately.

Slowly.

Like everyone felt something dangerous enter before they saw it.

Sadie did not look up at first.

She adjusted the tray.

She focused on the wine bottle.

She told herself she was imagining things.

Then she heard the silence.

Real silence.

The kind that only happened when someone important walked inside.

Her fingers tightened.

She looked toward the entrance.

And forgot how to breathe.

Roman stood there.

Three years disappeared in one second.

His dark hair was perfectly styled.

His charcoal suit fit like it had been made specifically for him.

The tattoos on his hands were visible beneath his expensive watch.

He looked exactly the same.

But Sadie was different.

She had changed everything.

Her hair.

Her name.

Her entire life.

Yet he still found her.

Roman's eyes moved across the restaurant.

Searching.

Not for a table.

Not for a reservation.

For her.

When their eyes met, his expression changed.

Only slightly.

Most people would never notice.

But Sadie knew him.

She knew every small movement.

Every silence.

Every hidden emotion.

He recognized her.

Her hands went numb.

The tray tilted.

The wine bottle slipped.

The crash echoed through the restaurant.

The expensive plates shattered across the floor.

Red wine spread across the marble.

Everyone turned.

The manager rushed forward.

Arthur was already angry before he even reached her.

"What did you do?"

Sadie said nothing.

She could not hear him.

All she heard was her own heartbeat.

Arthur grabbed her arm.

"Do you understand how much this costs?"

She looked at Roman.

Not at the broken dishes.

Not at the angry manager.

Only Roman.

Then Roman spoke.

Quietly.

"Take your hand off her."

The entire restaurant froze.

Arthur immediately released her.

Roman walked forward.

Slowly.

Calmly.

The kind of calm that frightened people more than anger.

"If you ever touch her again," Roman said, "you will remember this moment for the rest of your life."

Arthur's face changed.

He knew exactly who he was standing in front of.

Sadie lowered her eyes.

She wanted to disappear.

But Roman was already there.

He looked at the broken glass.

Then at her bleeding finger.

Then back at her face.

"You still cut yourself when you're scared."

Her heart stopped.

Nobody knew that.

Nobody except Nora.

Nobody except him.

Roman stepped closer.

And then he said the name she had buried three years ago.

"Nora."

The world around her disappeared.

She slowly looked up.

Because there was only one reason he would say that name.

He knew.

He had always known.

Roman reached into his coat pocket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Something old.

Something she recognized.

Her blood ran cold.

Because that envelope had disappeared the same night she ran away.

And written across the front were four words:

"THE TRUTH YOU LEFT."

Sadie reached toward it.

But before her fingers touched the envelope, Roman's phone suddenly rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

For the first time that night...

he looked afraid.

He answered.

Nobody heard what the person said.

But everyone saw Roman's face.

Then he looked directly at Sadie.

May you like

And whispered:

"They found you before I did..."
