Chapter 2 - The Envelope He Was Never Supposed To Find

The restaurant remained silent after Roman ended the phone call.
Not the peaceful silence that came after a beautiful performance.
A different kind.
A dangerous one.
The kind of silence where everyone waited to see who would move first.
Sadie stood frozen beside the broken glass.
Her finger was still bleeding.
She barely noticed.
All she could see was Roman’s expression.
For years, she had remembered him as untouchable.
A man who never showed fear.
A man who could walk into any room and make everyone else nervous.
But now...
For the first time since she knew him, Roman looked like someone had taken something from him.
Something important.
Something he could not control.
"Who was that?"
Her voice came out quieter than she expected.
Roman looked at her.
For a moment, he said nothing.
That scared her more than anything.
Because Roman always had an answer.
Always.
"I need you to come with me."
Sadie almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
Three years ago, she had spent every night convincing herself she would never hear those words again.
Come with me.
That sentence used to mean safety.
Protection.
Home.
Until she learned that sometimes the person holding the door open was also the person keeping you trapped.
She stepped backward.
"No."
The people around them looked away.
Nobody wanted to be involved.
Nobody wanted to be noticed.
Roman lowered his voice.
"Nora."
She hated that name.
Not because she hated who she was.
Because she missed her.
The woman who trusted too easily.
The woman who believed love could fix anything.
The woman who thought Roman was different.
"Don't call me that."
Roman's expression softened slightly.
"You know I can't call you Sadie."
Her chest tightened.
"Why?"
He looked around the restaurant.
Then back at her.
"Because Sadie doesn't exist."
The words hit harder than she expected.
She looked down.
For three years, she had built that name.
She built a life around it.
A small apartment.
A simple job.
A routine.
A version of herself that nobody could find.
And now he was standing in front of her, destroying it with one sentence.
Roman reached for the envelope.
He held it out.
"Take it."
Sadie stared at it.
"You expect me to trust you?"
"No."
His answer came immediately.
That surprised her.
Roman had always been confident.
Certain.
But now...
He looked tired.
"I expect you to trust what is inside."
She slowly took the envelope.
It felt heavier than paper.
Like it carried three years of questions.
Her hands shook slightly as she opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
An old one.
The moment she saw it, all the air left her lungs.
It was her.
Three years earlier.
Before she disappeared.
She was standing outside Roman's penthouse.
But she was not alone.
Standing beside her was a man she recognized.
Someone she thought she could trust.
Someone who had helped her escape.
Her own brother.
Daniel.
Sadie stared at the photograph.
"No..."
Roman watched her carefully.
"You remember that night."
She looked up.
"Where did you get this?"
Roman did not answer.
That was the problem with him.
He always knew when the truth would hurt more than silence.
She looked back at the picture.
There was something written on the back.
Four words.
Her hands became cold.
She turned it over.
And read:
"HE NEVER SAVED YOU."
Her heart started beating faster.
Because she knew exactly who "he" meant.
Daniel.
Her brother.
The person who told her Roman was coming after her.
The person who helped her pack.
The person who drove her to the airport.
The person who told her:
"Don't look back."
Sadie felt sick.
"No."
Roman watched her reaction.
"You trusted him."
She looked at Roman.
"You knew?"
"I knew something was wrong."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
His jaw tightened.
"Because the night you disappeared, someone broke into my office."
The answer made her freeze.
"What?"
Roman looked toward the restaurant entrance.
Like he expected someone to appear.
"They weren't trying to steal money."
Sadie slowly lowered the photograph.
"What were they looking for?"
Roman's eyes returned to hers.
"You."
The answer was almost a whisper.
She felt the room spinning.
Three years.
She spent three years believing she escaped from Roman.
But what if she had not been running from him?
What if she had been running from someone else?
"What happened that night?"
Roman looked away.
For a second, the powerful businessman disappeared.
And she saw the man she remembered.
The man who was hurt.
"The night you left..."
He paused.
"Someone sent me a message."
Sadie waited.
"What message?"
Roman reached into his pocket.
He pulled out his phone.
Then he showed her an old saved image.
A text message.
A message from three years ago.
Her eyes moved across the screen.
Her breathing stopped.
Because the message said:
"Your girl knows too much. Make sure she never reaches the truth."
Sadie stared at the words.
"No..."
Roman watched her.
"I didn't send anyone after you."
She looked at him.
"Then who did?"
Before Roman could answer, the restaurant doors opened.
Everyone turned.
A man walked inside.
Not a customer.
Not a waiter.
Sadie's face changed immediately.
Because she knew him.
Roman noticed.
"You know him?"
She couldn't speak.
The man slowly walked toward them.
Three years disappeared.
Because the person standing in front of her was the last person she expected to see alive.
Daniel.
Her brother.
The same man who helped her disappear.
The same man who told her Roman was dangerous.
The same man who had supposedly left the city the night after she vanished.
Roman stepped between them.
"Stay behind me."
Sadie ignored him.
She could not move.
Daniel stopped a few feet away.
His face was different.
Older.
More exhausted.
But it was still him.
"Hello, Nora."
Her hands tightened.
Nobody had called her that except Roman.
Until now.
Daniel looked at the photograph in her hand.
Then smiled sadly.
"You finally found out."
Sadie felt her stomach drop.
"Found out what?"
Daniel looked at Roman.
Then back at her.
"The reason you disappeared was never because of him."
Roman's expression changed.
"Daniel."
But Daniel continued.
"The reason you disappeared was because..."
He reached inside his coat.
Sadie saw something metallic.
Roman immediately moved forward.
And Daniel pulled out a small black memory card.
The same kind of card Roman had been searching for.
The same thing connected to the night Nora vanished.
Daniel placed it on the table.
Then whispered:
"Everything you remember about that night is a lie."
Sadie reached toward the memory card.
May you like
But before her fingers touched it, the restaurant lights suddenly went out.
And from the darkness, a voice behind her whispered her real name...
