Chapter 8 - The Truth Hidden Beneath the Empire

For the first time in three weeks, Daniel Cross stopped running.
Not because he was safe.
Not because the danger had disappeared.
But because Anna Bennett had reminded him of something he had forgotten.
Running was not the same as surviving.
Sometimes running only gave your enemies more time to prepare.
The abandoned apartment became their temporary command center.
The same place where they had hidden hours earlier now became the place where they planned their next move.
Anna sat at the small wooden table with a cup of cold coffee in front of her.
She hadn't slept.
None of them had.
The twins were finally resting, sleeping peacefully after the chaos of the night.
Anna watched them carefully.
It was strange.
These two babies had no idea what was happening around them.
They didn't know their names were connected to billions of dollars.
They didn't know powerful people wanted them gone.
They didn't know they had become the center of a war.
To them, the world was simple.
They only needed warmth.
Food.
Someone to hold them.
Anna envied that.
She wished life could still be that simple.
Across the room, Daniel stood beside the window.
He was staring at the city.
The same city where his family had built an empire.
The same city where someone had tried to erase him.
“You should sit down,” Anna said.
Daniel didn't turn.
“I’m fine.”
She sighed.
“There it is again.”
“What?”
“That sentence.”
He looked at her.
“What sentence?”
“I’m fine.”
A small pause.
“You say it every time something is obviously wrong.”
Daniel looked away.
Anna shook her head.
“You're terrible at pretending.”
“I've spent my entire life learning how.”
“That doesn't make you good at it.”
For a moment, Daniel said nothing.
Then he walked toward the table.
He sat across from her.
And Anna noticed something.
He looked exhausted.
Not just physically.
Emotionally.
Like he had been carrying something heavy for years.
“Michael was my older brother,” Daniel said quietly.
Anna looked up.
She hadn't expected him to start talking.
“He was always the one people trusted.”
Daniel stared at the pendant.
“He was smarter than me.”
Anna frowned.
“I don't believe that.”
“He was.”
“You don't sound like you mean that.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Michael cared about people.”
A pause.
“I cared about winning.”
Anna listened.
“When we were children, our father taught us one thing.”
“What?”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Never show weakness.”
The words were simple.
But they explained everything.
The gun.
The coldness.
The walls.
The reason Daniel struggled to accept help.
“My father believed emotions made people vulnerable.”
Anna looked at the sleeping babies.
“And now?”
Daniel followed her gaze.
“Now I think he was wrong.”
Silence.
Because Anna understood.
Daniel was changing.
Not because of money.
Not because of power.
Because two babies and one stubborn waitress had forced him to remember he was human.
Rachel entered the room holding the laptop.
“I found something.”
Both of them immediately became alert.
“What?” Daniel asked.
Rachel placed the laptop down.
“The transmitter Richard planted wasn't only recording.”
She turned the screen.
“It was uploading everything.”
Anna's expression changed.
“So they have the files?”
Rachel shook her head.
“Not completely.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“Explain.”
“The device was sending information to a remote server.”
Rachel opened another window.
“But Michael was smarter.”
A folder appeared.
“What is that?” Anna asked.
Rachel smiled slightly.
“A trap.”
Daniel looked confused.
“My brother created it?”
“Yes.”
Rachel clicked.
A hidden program opened.
Michael’s voice suddenly played.
“If someone is watching this, it means you found the wrong copy.”
Daniel froze.
Anna felt a chill.
Michael's recorded voice continued.
“The files you are searching for are not stored in one place.”
Rachel looked at Daniel.
“He split everything.”
The recording continued.
“Powerful people always make the same mistake. They think controlling information means controlling the truth.”
Michael paused.
“But truth survives.”
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel whispered:
“He knew.”
Rachel nodded.
“He knew someone would betray him.”
Anna looked at the screen.
“So where is the real evidence?”
Rachel opened another file.
A map appeared.
A location.
Daniel leaned closer.
His eyes widened.
“No.”
Anna noticed.
“What?”
Daniel stood.
“That place.”
“Where?”
He looked at her.
“The Cross family private archive.”
Anna frowned.
“You have an archive?”
Daniel nodded.
“My grandfather created it.”
“What was inside?”
Daniel's expression became darker.
“Everything the family wanted forgotten.”
Rachel added:
“Old contracts. Financial records. Private agreements.”
Anna looked between them.
“And Michael hid the evidence there?”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“He knew nobody would think to look there.”
“But your family owns the place.”
“Yes.”
Anna leaned back.
“That sounds like a problem.”
Daniel almost smiled.
“It is.”
“Good.”
He looked at her.
“Good?”
She nodded.
“Because every time we run, they expect us to run.”
Daniel studied her.
“So?”
“So we stop doing what they expect.”
Rachel looked impressed.
“You have a plan?”
Anna looked at Daniel.
“No.”
A pause.
“But he does.”
Daniel raised an eyebrow.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“You’re trusting me?”
Anna smiled slightly.
“Not completely.”
He almost laughed.
“Good answer.”
“But I know one thing.”
“What?”
“You know your enemy.”
Daniel became quiet.
Because she was right.
He had spent his entire life inside that world.
He understood the rules.
The lies.
The manipulation.
The people who smiled while destroying others.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
Again.
Daniel answered.
Silence.
Then a woman's voice.
“Daniel?”
His face changed instantly.
Anna noticed.
“Who is it?”
Daniel couldn't speak.
The voice continued.
“Please.”
A pause.
“I need your help.”
Daniel whispered:
“Vanessa?”
Anna looked confused.
“Who is Vanessa?”
Daniel looked at Rachel.
Then back at the phone.
“Where are you?”
The woman's voice trembled.
“They found me.”
A sudden noise came from the other end.
A struggle.
A crash.
Then silence.
Daniel stood immediately.
“We have to go.”
Anna grabbed his arm.
“Who is she?”
Daniel looked at her.
And for the first time, Anna saw real fear in his eyes.
“She knows what happened the night Michael died.”
The room went still.
Rachel grabbed her jacket.
“If Richard has her—”
“He does,” Daniel said.
Anna looked at the twins.
Then at Daniel.
She knew what this meant.
Another person needed saving.
Another secret.
Another danger.
But something had changed.
Before, Anna had been dragged into Daniel’s world.
Now she was choosing to stay.
She picked up the baby blankets.
“Then let's get her.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You don't have to.”
Anna looked at him.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“Actually, I do.”
Because Anna Bennett finally understood something.
She had spent her whole life believing people always left.
But maybe sometimes…
The people you save become the family you never had.
Daniel looked at her.
And for the first time since the alley…
He didn't see a waitress.
He didn't see someone he needed to protect.
He saw someone who had chosen him.
The rain outside began again.
But this time, Anna wasn't walking into the storm alone.
And somewhere across Boston, Richard Vale received the news.
Daniel Cross was moving.
But he wasn't running.
He was coming for them.
Richard looked at the message on his phone.
VANESSA FOUND.
A slow smile appeared on his face.
Because he knew something Daniel didn't.
Vanessa wasn't just a witness.
She was the final piece.

And once Daniel found out the truth…
The Cross empire would collapse from the inside.
