Chapter 5 - The Woman They Tried to Silence

By sunrise, Boston had already changed.
The city looked the same from a distance.
The same buildings.
The same streets.
The same endless movement of people rushing toward their jobs, their meetings, their ordinary lives.
But for Anna Bennett, nothing was ordinary anymore.
She sat inside an abandoned apartment above an old closed bookstore, watching the rain slide down the cracked window.
The place belonged to one of Daniel’s former employees.
A person who still owed him a favor.
That was how Daniel described it.
Anna was beginning to realize that Daniel Cross had an entire world she knew nothing about.
A world of private security.
Hidden locations.
People who disappeared.
People who knew too much.
People who were willing to kill for secrets.
And somehow, she was now standing in the middle of it.
She looked down at the baby sleeping peacefully in her arms.
It was almost impossible to believe.
Only one night ago, she had been wiping tables at Ali’s Diner.
Now she was hiding from one of the most powerful families in America.
With two babies who might inherit a billion-dollar empire.
Anna shook her head.
“This is insane.”
Daniel, sitting across the room while checking the silver pendant, looked up.
“Yes.”
She glanced at him.
“That’s it?”
“What do you want me to say?”
“I don't know. Maybe something like, ‘Anna, thank you for risking your life for me. I’m sorry I dragged you into a dangerous family war.’”
Daniel was silent.
Anna raised an eyebrow.
“Well?”
A small breath escaped him.
“Thank you.”
She blinked.
“That was easier than I expected.”
“I didn't say I was good at it.”
“No. You definitely aren't.”
For a brief moment, the tension disappeared.
It was the first normal moment they had shared.
But it didn't last.
Because Daniel’s expression changed.
He was looking at the pendant again.
Anna noticed.
“What?”
He placed it on the table.
“My brother used this symbol before.”
“The number?”
“Yes.”
“317?”
Daniel nodded.
“When we were kids, Michael and I used to hide messages from each other.”
Anna smiled slightly.
“You played secret games?”
“Something like that.”
“What kind of messages?”
“Things only we understood.”
She looked at him.
“And this is one of those?”
Daniel picked up the pendant.
“Maybe.”
“Maybe?”
He looked frustrated.
“My brother was careful. If he wanted someone to find this, he would have left a trail.”
“But?”
“But he would also make sure the wrong person couldn't follow it.”
Anna studied him.
“You think there's more to it.”
“Yes.”
“Then we find out.”
Daniel looked at her.
The certainty in her voice surprised him.
“You say that like it's simple.”
“No.”
Anna shook her head.
“I say it because sitting here scared won't help.”
Daniel stared.
“You're not afraid?”
She laughed softly.
“I'm terrified.”
That answer caught him off guard.
“But fear doesn't mean stop.”
She looked at the sleeping baby.
“Sometimes fear means something matters.”
Daniel didn't speak.
Because nobody had ever explained courage that way.
Everyone he knew viewed fear as weakness.
But Anna saw it differently.
Before Daniel could respond, a loud sound came from outside.
A car.
Both of them immediately became alert.
Daniel stood.
Too quickly.
Pain crossed his face.
Anna noticed.
“You're hurt.”
“I’m fine.”
She gave him a look.
“Still saying that?”
He ignored her.
He moved toward the window carefully.
Below, a black sedan had stopped outside the bookstore.
Anna felt her heart drop.
“Is that them?”
Daniel looked closer.
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“Because Richard sends SUVs.”
Anna stared.
“You know their cars?”
“When people want you dead, you learn details.”
The front door downstairs opened.
Footsteps.
Someone entered the building.
Daniel immediately grabbed the gun.
Anna saw it.
And for a second, the fear from the alley returned.
But this time, she wasn't looking at a stranger.
She knew Daniel.
At least a little.
And she knew he wasn't pointing the gun because he wanted power.
He was protecting them.
A voice came from downstairs.
“Daniel?”
Both of them froze.
A woman's voice.
Not Richard.
Not a man's voice.
Daniel lowered the gun slightly.
“Rachel.”
Anna looked at him.
“Who is Rachel?”
Before he answered, the door opened.
A woman in her early thirties stepped inside.
Dark hair.
Sharp eyes.
Calm expression.
She looked at Daniel.
Then immediately at the babies.
“Oh my God.”
Her expression softened.
“They’re alive.”
Daniel nodded.
Rachel moved closer.
“You found them.”
“No.”
Daniel looked at Anna.
“She found us.”
Rachel turned.
For the first time, she noticed Anna.
The waitress.
The stranger.
The woman who had changed everything.
Rachel studied her carefully.
“You’re Anna Bennett.”
Anna frowned.
“You know me?”
Rachel hesitated.
“I know what happened last night.”
Anna immediately became suspicious.
“How?”
Rachel looked at Daniel.
“They were watching the diner.”
The room became silent.
Anna felt cold.
“They?”
Rachel nodded.
“Richard’s people.”
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“They saw her?”
“Yes.”
Anna looked between them.
“What are you saying?”
Rachel's face became serious.
“They know you helped him.”
A heavy silence followed.
Anna looked toward the window.
The city outside suddenly felt much smaller.
“They know my name?”
“Yes.”
“My address?”
Rachel didn't answer immediately.
That was answer enough.
Anna stepped back.
“No.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Anna—”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I have spent my whole life trying to survive.”
Her voice became emotional.
“I finally have a small apartment. A job. A normal life.”
Daniel looked guilty.
“I know.”
“No, you don't.”
She looked at him.
“You have never had a normal life.”
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
Anna continued.
“I can't become another person who disappears because of your family.”
Daniel looked down.
For the first time, he seemed to understand what she was losing.
Her safety.
Her peace.
Her ordinary life.
“I never wanted this for you.”
Anna looked at him.
“But it happened.”
Silence.
Then Rachel spoke.
“There’s something you need to see.”
She placed a small folder on the table.
Daniel opened it.
Inside were photographs.
His brother Michael.
The babies.
And several documents.
Anna watched Daniel’s expression change as he read.
“What is it?”
Daniel didn't answer.
Rachel looked at her.
“Michael wasn't killed because he discovered corruption.”
Anna felt a chill.
“Then why?”
Rachel’s voice lowered.
“Because he discovered someone inside the Cross family was planning to take control of the company.”
Daniel stared at the documents.
Anna looked at him.
“Who?”
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel slowly turned one photograph around.
It showed a meeting.
A familiar face.
A face Anna had heard about.
A face connected to the empire.
Daniel whispered:
“My father.”
The room went silent.
Anna looked at Daniel.
The man who had spent the night running from enemies.
The man who had lost his brother.
The man who thought he knew who was hunting him.
But now the truth was becoming darker.
Maybe the enemy was not outside the family.
Maybe it had always been inside.
Suddenly, Rachel's phone rang.
She answered.
Her face changed instantly.
“What?”
A pause.
Then:
“No, that's impossible.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What happened?”
Rachel slowly lowered the phone.
Her voice was barely audible.
“They found us.”
Anna felt her stomach drop.
“How?”
Rachel looked at Daniel.
Then at Anna.
“Because someone inside this room betrayed us.”
Everyone froze.
Anna looked at Daniel.
Daniel looked at Rachel.
May you like
And for the first time since the alley…
Nobody knew who they could trust.
