Chapter 7 - The Choice That Changed Everything

The sound of the door unlocking felt louder than thunder.

Anna stood frozen in the darkness, holding one of the twins against her chest while Daniel stood between them and the entrance.

The apartment had become a battlefield.

A few hours ago, Anna had worried about paying rent.

Now she was hiding from powerful men who controlled corporations, politicians, and possibly entire parts of the city.

It was impossible.

It was insane.

Yet somehow, she was still standing.

Daniel slowly raised the gun.

Rachel whispered:

“Daniel.”

He didn't look back.

“What?”

“If you shoot him…”

“I know.”

“No.”

Rachel shook her head.

“You don't understand.”

Daniel glanced at her.

“I understand perfectly.”

“No, you don't.”

Her voice became urgent.

“If Richard wanted us dead, we would already be dead.”

The words stopped him.

Anna looked confused.

“What are you saying?”

Rachel looked toward the door.

“He wants something.”

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“Me.”

Rachel shook her head.

“No.”

A pause.

“The evidence.”

The room went silent.

Anna looked at the laptop.

The files.

The recordings.

The proof Michael had risked his life to uncover.

Richard didn't just want Daniel.

He wanted the truth destroyed.

The door opened slightly.

A man's shadow appeared.

Then Richard Vale stepped inside.

He looked exactly like Anna imagined.

Perfect suit.

Perfect posture.

Calm expression.

A man who never needed to raise his voice because people already feared him.

Two security men stood behind him.

Richard looked around the room.

Then his eyes landed on Daniel.

“You look tired.”

Daniel stared at him.

“You tried to kill me.”

Richard sighed.

“I knew you would say that.”

“Because it's true.”

Richard looked almost disappointed.

“You always had your brother's weakness.”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Don't talk about Michael.”

Richard smiled faintly.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“That emotion.”

Richard stepped forward.

“The thing that made both of you impossible to control.”

Anna watched Daniel carefully.

She saw the anger.

But she also saw pain.

Richard continued.

“Your brother believed truth mattered more than power.”

A pause.

“That belief got him killed.”

Daniel moved forward.

Rachel grabbed his arm.

“Don't.”

Richard noticed.

“You see?”

He looked at Anna.

“Everyone around Daniel eventually learns the same lesson.”

Anna stared at him.

“What lesson?”

Richard smiled.

“That loyalty is expensive.”

Anna felt disgust.

“You think threatening people makes you powerful?”

Richard looked at her.

For the first time, he seemed interested.

“You must be Anna Bennett.”

She froze.

Hearing her name from him felt different.

Dangerous.

“How do you know me?”

Richard didn't answer directly.

“I was surprised.”

“By what?”

“That Daniel trusted someone so quickly.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Leave her out of this.”

Richard looked at him.

“You still don't understand.”

He glanced at the babies.

“You brought her into this the moment you let her save you.”

Anna felt anger rising.

“She saved your life.”

Richard smiled.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“And that is why she is now a liability.”

The word hit harder than she expected.

Liability.

Like she was an object.

A problem.

Something to remove.

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“Choose your next words carefully.”

Richard looked amused.

“Or what?”

The room became tense.

Because everyone knew Daniel was injured.

Outnumbered.

But Richard also knew something.

Daniel Cross was dangerous when someone threatened innocent people.

Richard turned toward the babies.

“Those children belong to Cross International.”

Daniel's face changed.

“No.”

Richard continued.

“The law will decide who protects them.”

“You mean you.”

“I mean the family.”

Daniel laughed quietly.

“The family that killed their father?”

Richard's expression finally changed.

Only slightly.

But Anna noticed.

A crack.

A reaction.

Daniel noticed too.

“You knew.”

Silence.

“You knew Michael was in danger.”

Richard said nothing.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You knew.”

His voice shook.

“And you let it happen.”

Richard looked at him.

“Michael made choices.”

“He trusted you.”

“And that was his mistake.”

The words were like a knife.

Anna saw Daniel's hand tighten around the gun.

But before anything happened, one of the babies began crying.

The sound immediately changed Daniel.

His anger disappeared.

He looked back.

The baby was scared.

And suddenly, the billionaire heir was gone.

Only a father remained.

Richard noticed.

And smiled.

Because he saw the weakness.

Anna saw it too.

But unlike Richard, she didn't see weakness.

She saw humanity.

Richard reached into his coat.

Daniel raised the gun.

“Slowly.”

Richard stopped.

Then pulled out a phone.

Not a weapon.

He held it up.

“I'm not here to fight.”

Daniel didn't believe him.

Richard pressed the screen.

A video appeared.

Michael.

Daniel froze.

Anna looked at the screen.

Michael was alive in the recording.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Daniel whispered:

“No…”

Richard watched his reaction.

“Your brother recorded this two days before he died.”

Daniel stared.

“Where did you get that?”

Richard smiled.

“That's the question you should ask.”

The video played.

Michael looked directly into the camera.

“Daniel…”

His voice was quiet.

“If you're seeing this, I'm sorry.”

Daniel couldn't move.

Michael continued.

“I need you to understand something.”

He looked terrified.

“The enemy isn't who you think.”

Daniel leaned closer.

Anna watched his face.

Every emotion was visible.

Hope.

Pain.

Fear.

Michael continued.

“Do not trust—”

The video cut.

Static.

Then darkness.

Richard lowered the phone.

“That is all you get.”

Daniel looked furious.

“You edited it.”

“Maybe.”

“What did he say?”

Richard smiled.

“Maybe you should find out yourself.”

Anna realized something.

Richard wasn't just trying to intimidate them.

He was playing with them.

He wanted them searching.

He wanted them confused.

He wanted them fighting each other.

Daniel looked at the phone.

Then at Richard.

“What do you want?”

Richard answered immediately.

“The evidence.”

“No.”

“Then I take the children.”

Daniel's expression changed.

Richard continued.

“Give me what Michael left behind, and everyone walks away.”

Anna looked at Daniel.

She knew the answer before he spoke.

“No.”

Richard sighed.

“I expected that.”

He turned toward the door.

“Then we do this another way.”

The security men moved.

Daniel raised the gun.

Anna grabbed his arm.

“Wait.”

Everyone looked at her.

She stepped forward.

Richard smiled.

“There she is.”

Anna ignored him.

She looked at Daniel.

“Where is the evidence?”

Daniel frowned.

“Anna.”

“Answer me.”

“Why?”

“Because he's right about one thing.”

Daniel looked confused.

“We can't keep running.”

The room became silent.

Anna looked at the laptop.

The evidence.

The twins.

Then Daniel.

“We need to stop reacting.”

A pause.

“We need to make them afraid.”

Daniel stared at her.

Richard's smile faded slightly.

Because for the first time that night…

Someone was not afraid of him.

A waitress who had nothing.

A woman who had every reason to run.

Was standing in front of the most powerful man in Boston.

And she was planning to fight.

Daniel slowly lowered the gun.

“What are you thinking?”

Anna looked at Richard.

Then back at Daniel.

“I think your family made one mistake.”

“What?”

“They thought the only people who could defeat them were powerful people.”

She tightened her grip.

“They forgot about ordinary people who have nothing left to lose.”

For the first time…

Daniel Cross looked at Anna Bennett not as someone he needed to protect.

But as someone standing beside him.

Richard noticed.

And that worried him.

Because the biggest threat to an empire was never another empire.

It was someone nobody expected.

Someone invisible.

Someone underestimated.

Someone like Anna Bennett.

And as Richard walked away that night, he realized something too late:

May you like

The waitress he thought was a weakness…

Had become Daniel Cross's greatest weapon.
