Chapter 6 - The Betrayal at Midnight

Claire put the call on speaker.
Adrian moved closer.
Noah went pale.
Evelyn's voice filled Victor's office.
“Is Adrian with you?”
Claire answered, “Yes.”
Silence.
Then:
“Adrian?”
He couldn't speak at first.
Thirty-four years old.
Powerful.
Feared.
A man who commanded rooms without raising his voice.
And suddenly he was a child again.
“Mom?”
Evelyn began crying.
“My baby.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
Claire squeezed his hand.
“Where are you?”
“Union Station.”
“We're coming.”
“No.”
Everyone froze.
“Why?”
“Because Noah knows where I am.”
Noah stepped forward.
“Mom.”
Evelyn inhaled sharply.
“He's there?”
“Yes.”
“Get away from him.”
Adrian stared at Noah.
“What did you do?”
Noah shook his head.
“She doesn't understand.”
Evelyn shouted through the phone.
“Don't let him leave!”
Marcus blocked the doorway.
Noah raised both hands.
“Listen to me.”
Adrian's voice became cold.
“You have thirty seconds.”
Noah looked at Claire.
“Your father found me twelve years ago.”
Claire blinked.
“What?”
“Daniel Bennett knew who I was. He helped me disappear from Victor.”
“My dad?”
“Yes.”
Noah explained that Daniel had discovered Victor's crimes while searching for Rebecca.
He eventually found Evelyn too.
Together they built the evidence archive.
But Victor discovered Daniel's investigation.
Daniel was killed six years earlier in what police called a highway accident.
Claire's eyes filled.
“You're saying Victor killed my father.”
“Yes.”
Evelyn's voice came through the phone.
“And Noah helped him.”
Adrian looked at his brother.
Noah's face collapsed.
“No.”
“Tell them,” Evelyn demanded.
Noah whispered, “I made a mistake.”
“What mistake?”
Victor had contacted Noah six years earlier.
He promised to stop hunting Evelyn if Noah revealed where Daniel kept his files.
Noah believed him.
He gave Victor Daniel's location.
Hours later, Daniel was dead.
Claire stepped backward.
“You gave him my father.”
“I didn't know.”
“You gave him my father!”
“I thought Victor wanted the evidence.”
“He wanted both!”
Noah lowered his head.
“I know.”
Claire wanted to hate him.
Part of her did.
But the guilt on his face wasn't manufactured.
He had carried it for six years.
Adrian stood between them.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I knew you'd never forgive me.”
“That wasn't your decision.”
“No.”
Noah's voice cracked.
“It wasn't.”
Claire turned away.
Rebecca approached her.
“Your father knew.”
Claire looked at her.
“What?”
“Daniel knew Noah had betrayed him.”
“And he still helped him?”
Rebecca nodded.
“Your father believed people were more than the worst mistake they'd ever made.”
Claire cried quietly.
Rebecca touched her face.
“He forgave Noah before he died.”
That hurt more.
It also changed something.
Claire looked at Noah.
“I can't forgive you tonight.”
“I don't expect you to.”
“But my father did.”
Noah nodded.
“I never deserved it.”
“Maybe that's why he gave it.”
Evelyn remained at Union Station.
They went together.
Adrian saw his mother near the empty platform.
He stopped walking.
Evelyn was sixty now.
Gray threaded her dark hair.
She looked tired.
But when she saw Adrian, her face became the face of the woman from his childhood photographs.
Adrian crossed the platform.
They embraced.
Claire looked away to give them privacy.
Rebecca cried beside her.
Noah remained twenty feet back.
Evelyn eventually saw him.
Her expression hardened.
Noah didn't approach.
“I'm sorry,” he said.
Evelyn stared at him.
“I lost one son because of Victor.”
Noah lowered his eyes.
“I know.”
“I almost lost both.”
“I know.”
“But you're still my son.”
Noah looked up.
Evelyn opened her arms.
He broke.
The brothers and their mother stood together for the first time in decades.
Claire felt Rebecca's hand enter hers.
For one moment, the night seemed almost kind.
Then Marcus approached.
“Adrian.”
“What?”
“Victor never reached county detention.”
Adrian turned.
“What happened?”
“Transport was intercepted.”
Noah swore.
Marcus continued.
“Two officers wounded. Victor escaped.”
Claire's stomach tightened.
Adrian immediately looked at her.
“Where would he go?”
Evelyn answered.
“The evidence.”
“We copied everything.”
“Not everything.”
Claire turned.
Evelyn looked at the silver key.
“That key opens one final compartment.”
“Where?”
“The Halcyon Room.”
Again.
They returned to the bar just after midnight.
The lounge was dark.
Claire walked behind the counter.
Evelyn showed her a hidden lock beneath the marble.
Claire inserted the key.
A drawer opened.
Inside was a single flash drive.
Daniel Bennett's handwriting covered a label.
THE ORIGINAL.
Claire stared.
“My father.”
Evelyn nodded.
“He made three copies. Victor destroyed two.”
Adrian picked up the drive.
“This is enough?”
“To put away everyone involved.”
Not only Victor.
Judges.
Police officials.
Executives.
People who had helped hide Bellweather.
Claire looked around the bar.
The place where Brooke had humiliated her.
Where she'd kissed a stranger because she was tired of being made small.
That ridiculous decision had brought her here.
Adrian touched her shoulder.
“You okay?”
“No.”
“Good.”
She looked at him.
“You said that before.”
“Honesty is attractive.”
Claire smiled.
“So is shutting up occasionally.”
“I'll work on it.”
A gun clicked behind them.
Everyone froze.
Brooke stood near the entrance.
Her hands shook around the weapon.
Claire stared.
“Brooke.”
Tears covered Brooke's face.
“Give me the drive.”
“Why?”
“He has my sister.”
Victor.
Claire understood.
“Brooke, don't do this.”
“I don't have a choice.”
“You always have a choice.”
“You don't understand.”
Claire stepped forward.
Brooke raised the gun.
“Stop.”
Claire stopped.
“You humiliated me because Victor told you to.”
Brooke cried.
“Yes.”
“You watched me for two years.”
“Yes.”
“And now you're going to shoot me?”
“No.”
“Then lower it.”
“I can't.”
Claire looked at her.
Not the beautiful coworker.
Not the bully.
A terrified woman.
“Brooke.”
“What?”
“You bet a hundred dollars I couldn't get Adrian to notice me.”
Despite herself, Brooke gave a broken laugh.
Claire smiled faintly.
“You owe me.”
Brooke's weapon lowered an inch.
Then the bar's front doors opened.
Victor walked inside.
He held Brooke's younger sister by the arm.
Brooke turned.
Victor raised his gun.
A shot exploded.
Claire screamed.
May you like
Someone fell.
And Adrian's hand slipped out of hers.
