Chapter 5 - The Secret Behind the Black Door

“Mom!”
Claire ran toward the corridor.
Empty.
Adrian followed.
Marcus checked the cameras.
Rebecca had been taken through the service elevator less than sixty seconds earlier.
Noah dropped the envelope on the bar.
“You're wasting time.”
Adrian turned toward the brother he'd believed never existed.
“You knew this would happen?”
“I knew Victor would come.”
“Then why didn't you warn us?”
“I tried for sixteen years.”
Noah pointed toward the silver key.
“I left that.”
Claire stared.
“You?”
“I needed you to find Room 317.”
“You could have knocked on my door.”
“No. Victor watched you.”
“Brooke.”
“Brooke was one of many.”
Claire's anger sharpened.
“You used me.”
“I gave you the truth.”
“You gave me enough truth to put my mother in danger.”
Noah accepted that without argument.
“You're right.”
Adrian stepped between them.
“Where did Father take Rebecca?”
Noah looked at him.
“Back where everything started.”
“Bellweather?”
“No.”
He pointed through the windows.
“Vale Tower.”
Victor's corporate headquarters.
They moved immediately.
On the drive, Claire sat beside Noah.
“Why tonight?”
“Because Victor was meeting Adrian.”
“For what?”
Noah looked at his brother.
“To make him CEO tomorrow.”
Adrian frowned.
“I already refused.”
“Victor wasn't asking.”
Noah explained that Victor intended to transfer control of Vale Holdings to Adrian, then disappear before federal investigators could act.
Adrian would inherit not only the company.
He would inherit liability.
Victor planned to make his own son the public face of crimes he had committed.
Claire whispered, “He was setting you up.”
“For years,” Noah said.
Adrian stared through the window.
Claire touched his hand.
He looked down.
She almost withdrew.
He closed his fingers around hers.
Noah noticed but said nothing.
Vale Tower was nearly empty.
They entered through underground parking.
Noah knew the security systems.
That unsettled Adrian.
“How?”
“I worked here.”
“When?”
“Seven years.”
“Under what name?”
“Cole Mercer.”
Adrian stopped.
“You were Cole?”
Claire looked between them.
“Who is Cole?”
Adrian stared at Noah.
“My head of overseas logistics.”
“You've met?”
“Dozens of times.”
Noah gave a sad smile.
“You never recognized me.”
“I thought you were dead.”
“Exactly.”
They reached Victor's private floor.
Rebecca sat inside his office.
Alive.
Victor stood behind her.
No visible weapons.
“You brought everyone,” he said.
Claire rushed toward her mother.
Victor raised a remote.
“Don't.”
A red light blinked.
Noah stopped.
“Explosives?”
Victor smiled.
“Insurance.”
Adrian looked around.
“You'll kill yourself?”
“I've spent my life making sure other people die first.”
Claire felt Rebecca's eyes on her.
Her mother subtly moved one finger toward the desk.
Claire followed.
A phone.
Recording.
Rebecca had activated it.
Claire understood.
Keep him talking.
“You ruined our family,” Claire said.
Victor shrugged.
“Your mother made choices.”
“She exposed you.”
“She stole from me.”
“Evidence isn't yours simply because it proves you're guilty.”
Victor smiled.
“I like you.”
“The feeling isn't mutual.”
Adrian stepped closer.
“Why did you kill Mother?”
Victor's smile faded.
“I didn't.”
“Then where is she?”
Noah answered.
“Ask him about Boston.”
Victor looked at Noah.
For the first time, fear crossed his face.
Noah smiled.
“You didn't know I found her.”
Adrian turned.
“You found Evelyn?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Noah looked at Victor.
“Safe.”
Victor pressed the remote.
Nothing happened.
Marcus's voice came through Adrian's earpiece.
“Device disabled.”
Adrian moved.
Victor reached for a drawer.
Claire grabbed the heavy metal sculpture on the desk and slammed it onto Victor's wrist.
He shouted.
Adrian restrained him.
Security rushed inside.
Victor looked at Claire with fury.
“You stupid waitress.”
Claire stared at him.
“That waitress just beat you with your own award.”
Noah laughed.
Even Rebecca smiled.
Police arrived.
The evidence from Bellweather and the hidden room had already been copied and sent to federal investigators.
Victor Vale was arrested.
For the first time, Claire thought it might be over.
She was wrong.
As officers escorted Victor toward the elevator, he stopped beside Adrian.
“You think Noah came back because he loves you?”
Adrian said nothing.
Victor smiled.
“Ask him what happened to your mother three months ago.”
Noah's face changed.
Adrian saw it.
“What happened?”
Noah looked away.
“Noah.”
Claire felt the tension return.
Adrian grabbed his brother's shoulder.
“Where is she?”
Noah's voice broke.
“I said I found her.”
“You said she was safe.”
“She was.”
Adrian's grip tightened.
“Was?”
Noah closed his eyes.
“Three months ago, Evelyn disappeared again.”
Victor laughed from the elevator.
Adrian turned.
His father smiled.
“She didn't disappear.”
The elevator doors began closing.
Victor's final words slipped through the narrowing gap.
“She came looking for Claire.”
The doors shut.
Then Claire's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A woman's voice whispered:
“Claire Bennett?”
“Yes?”
“My name is Evelyn Vale.”
Claire looked at Adrian.
May you like
The voice continued.
“And there's something you need to know before you trust Noah.”
