Chapter 6 - The Father Who Never Died

The doors of the abandoned ferry terminal opened.
Men entered first.
Ten.
Then fifteen.
Dark coats.
Weapons low.
Professional.
Behind them walked an old man with silver hair.
Lucian Vale.
Damian stared at his father.
Six years of death disappeared in one breath.
Lucian smiled.
“My sons.”
Adrian raised his gun.
Lucian did not flinch.
“You always were emotional.”
Damian stood beside his brother.
“You’re supposed to be dead.”
“So were you, once.”
Tessa remained beside Elias, pressing cloth against his wound.
Nico stood over Victor.
Lucian noticed her.
“Daniel Reed’s daughter.”
Tessa looked at him.
“You killed my father.”
Lucian smiled.
“Straight to business.”
“Did you?”
Damian’s jaw tightened.
Lucian looked at him.
“You brought her this far without telling her?”
“I didn’t know.”
“Of course you didn’t.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“You ordered Daniel’s unit onto that road.”
“Yes.”
Tessa felt the answer like a physical blow.
No denial.
No hesitation.
“Why?”
Lucian looked at her.
“Because your father was a stubborn man.”
“He found your weapons.”
“He found a business.”
“He reported it.”
“He threatened my people.”
“He was doing his job.”
Lucian shrugged.
“And I did mine.”
Damian moved before anyone expected.
He crossed half the room and punched Lucian.
Two guards raised weapons.
Adrian aimed.
Nico drew.
Lucian lifted one hand.
Everyone stopped.
Blood appeared at the corner of his mouth.
He laughed.
“There you are.”
Damian stared.
“There who is?”
“My son.”
“Don’t call me that.”
“You think six years of pretending to be legitimate changed what you are?”
“I am nothing like you.”
Lucian wiped his mouth.
“You run my companies.”
“I cleaned them.”
“You kept the money.”
“I turned most of it legal.”
“You kept the power.”
“To stop men like you taking it.”
Lucian smiled.
“That’s what all kings say.”
Tessa stood.
“Where is my mother?”
Lucian looked at her.
“Safe.”
“Show me.”
He nodded.
One guard brought in a tablet.
A live video appeared.
Tessa’s mother sat in a chair inside an unfamiliar room.
Not tied.
But frightened.
A man stood behind her.
Tessa stepped forward.
“Mom.”
Her mother could not hear.
Lucian watched Tessa’s reaction.
“She goes home when I get what I want.”
“What?”
“The flash drive.”
Adrian laughed.
“You don’t need it. You know what’s on it.”
“I know what Nico decrypted.”
“What else?”
Lucian looked at Damian.
“My sons still don’t understand.”
Damian stared.
“Understand what?”
“The payments weren’t to Victor.”
Victor stopped struggling.
Lucian continued.
“They were through Victor.”
Nico frowned.
“Who received them?”
Lucian smiled.
“Someone Damian trusts more.”
Damian looked around.
Adrian.
Nico.
Elias.
Victor.
Tessa.
Lucian enjoyed the silence.
“Give me the drive and Daniel Reed’s widow goes home.”
Tessa looked at Adrian.
“Give it to him.”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
“That’s my mother.”
“The drive is leverage.”
“So is she.”
“Tessa—”
“Give him the drive.”
Damian spoke.
“No.”
She turned on him.
“Not you too.”
“If we hand it over, he kills us.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I know him.”
Lucian nodded.
“He does.”
Tessa stared at Damian.
Then at her mother on the screen.
Then at Lucian.
“What if I come with you?”
Damian said, “No.”
Lucian smiled.
“Interesting.”
“My mother for me.”
“No.”
“I’m the one you asked for at the pier.”
Lucian tilted his head.
“I asked for you because I wanted to know what Daniel told his family.”
“He told us nothing.”
“Everyone tells someone something.”
“My father died thinking he protected us by staying quiet.”
“Did he?”
“Yes.”
Lucian studied her.
Tessa looked at the three silver scratches on the damaged key fob in her pocket.
Then she remembered something.
The symbol.
A circle with three lines.
Adrian’s old unit.
Her father’s photograph.
The marks.
She slowly looked at Adrian.
“You marked the key with three lines.”
“Yes.”
“Why three?”
“Old symbol.”
“What did it mean?”
Adrian hesitated.
“Safe extraction.”
Tessa’s heart sped up.
Her father had used symbols too.
Not the same exact one.
But field marks.
Three lines on a door.
Three on a case.
Three on a map.
Safe path.
She looked at the key.
Silver scratches.
Not decoration.
A message.
“Adrian.”
“What?”
“When did you scratch this?”
“I didn’t.”
Everyone froze.
Tessa stared.
“You said you marked it.”
“I said the three lines were an old symbol.”
“You didn’t make them?”
“No.”
Lucian’s face changed.
Just slightly.
Tessa saw it.
“Who had the keys before me?”
Damian answered.
“Marco.”
“The driver.”
“Yes.”
Tessa looked at the three lines again.
Marco knew about Daniel Reed.
Marco knew the conspiracy.
Marco had been killed.
He had scratched the key before handing the vehicle to valet service.
Why?
Safe extraction.
Or direction.
Three lines.
The fob casing had cracked after the explosion.
Tessa turned it over.
Something shifted inside.
She used her thumbnail to pry open the back.
A tiny folded strip of paper fell out.
Lucian shouted.
“Take it!”
Damian moved.
Adrian fired toward the ceiling.
Nico tackled one guard.
Chaos erupted.
Tessa dropped behind a steel bench and opened the paper.
One line.
VAULT 3. PORT AUTHORITY. REED FILE.
Lucian had seen it.
His face twisted.
“Get her!”
Damian reached Tessa first.
“Run!”
They moved through the terminal.
Adrian covered them.
Nico dragged Elias.
Victor broke free during the confusion and disappeared.
Tessa and Damian reached a side exit.
Gunfire cracked behind them.
Outside, fog covered the pier.
Adrian appeared.
“This way.”
They reached an old patrol boat tied beneath the dock.
Nico arrived with Elias.
They pushed off.
Lucian’s men reached the pier too late.
Bullets struck the water behind them.
Damian drove the boat across the river.
Tessa looked back.
Lucian stood at the end of the dock.
Watching.
Not angry anymore.
Smiling.
She hated that smile.
“He wanted us to find the note.”
Damian looked at her.
“What?”
“Marco hid it in the key, but Lucian let us escape.”
Adrian turned.
“No.”
“He had fifteen armed men.”
Nico looked back.
“She’s right.”
Damian slowed the boat.
“Then Vault Three is a trap.”
Tessa looked at the paper.
“Or something he wants us to open for him.”
The Port Authority building sat three miles upriver.
By 1:40 a.m., they reached a private dock nearby.
A medic met them and took Elias.
Nico stayed with him.
Damian, Adrian, and Tessa entered the administrative building using credentials Adrian had obtained.
Vault Three was below ground.
No guards.
No alarms.
Too easy.
Damian noticed.
“This is wrong.”
Tessa agreed.
They reached the vault door.
Digital keypad.
Adrian tried codes.
Nothing.
Tessa looked at the paper again.
REED FILE.
“My father’s service number.”
She entered the last six digits.
Green light.
The vault unlocked.
Damian looked at her.
“Marco knew your father’s number.”
“Apparently.”
They opened the door.
Inside were shelves of documents.
Old evidence cases.
Seized records.
Tessa searched labels.
REED, DANIEL.
One box.
She pulled it down.
Inside sat a hard drive.
A notebook.
And an envelope addressed by hand.
TESSA.
Her knees nearly failed.
“That’s my father’s writing.”
She opened it.
One page.
Tessa,
If you ever receive this, then the people I feared found us after all.
Do not trust Lucian Vale.
But do not hate his sons for what their father did.
Adrian tried to help me.
Damian never knew.
The proof is on the drive.
And there is one more name you must know.
Tessa stopped.
Damian leaned closer.
“What?”
She looked at the bottom of the page.
One name.
Her breath caught.
“No.”
Adrian stepped toward her.
“Who is it?”
Tessa raised the letter.
The final line read:
The man financing Lucian’s operation is someone your mother still believes is dead.
Tessa looked at Damian.
Then the vault lights turned off.
A voice spoke from the darkness behind them.
“You should have listened to your father.”
Tessa recognized the voice.
She turned.
A man stepped into the emergency light.
Her father.
May you like
Daniel Reed.
Alive.
