Chapter 6 - The Man Who Came Back

The hospital doors opened slowly.

Everyone turned.

Nobody spoke.

A man stood in the doorway.

For a moment, I didn't recognize him.

Not because I had never seen his face.

Because I had seen his face before.

In photographs.

In old newspaper articles.

In the documents inside my father's folder.

The man who stood there was older than I expected.

Gray hair.

Sharp eyes.

A calm expression that made the entire room feel smaller.

My father immediately stepped forward.

"You're supposed to be gone."

The man's lips formed a small smile.

"And yet here I am, Charles."

My stomach dropped.

Because I had never heard anyone speak to my father that way.

Not with confidence.

Not without fear.

My father looked at me.

"Emma, stay behind me."

Again.

Those words.

But this time, I understood why.

This wasn't about Dominic anymore.

It was bigger.

Much bigger.

The man slowly walked toward us.

The security team around my father moved into position.

But he didn't seem concerned.

He looked at me.

Not my father.

Me.

"Emma Brooks."

Hearing my full name from a stranger sent a chill through my body.

"How do you know me?"

He stopped several feet away.

"Because I have known about you since before you were born."

My father's expression changed.

"Enough."

The man's eyes moved to him.

"You always did the same thing."

"What?"

"Hide the truth until you believe the danger disappears."

My father didn't respond.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because my father always had an answer.

Always.

I looked at him.

"Dad."

He didn't look at me.

"Who is he?"

The silence lasted too long.

Finally, my father said:

"His name is Victor Hale."

I felt my heart stop.

Hale.

The same last name.

Dominic.

I turned toward my husband.

Dominic looked down.

Like he had been waiting for this moment.

"You knew."

My voice was barely above a whisper.

Dominic looked at me.

"I knew he was alive."

The words hit me harder than anything else.

"You knew?"

"I found out recently."

"Recently?"

I laughed softly.

Not because anything was funny.

Because my life had become impossible.

"You knew the person behind all of this was alive, and you still let me believe everything was normal?"

Dominic looked broken.

"I was trying to keep you away from him."

I stared at him.

"You left me outside a hospital with twelve dollars."

He had no answer.

Because there wasn't one.

Victor watched the exchange quietly.

Almost like he was enjoying it.

"You see, Emma?"

His voice was calm.

"Everyone around you has been making decisions for you."

I looked at him.

"I don't know you."

"No."

He smiled.

"But you know my son."

My body went cold.

I looked at Dominic.

Then back at Victor.

"What does that mean?"

Nobody answered.

The silence told me there was something worse.

Something I hadn't discovered yet.

Victor looked at Dominic.

"You were always weak."

Dominic's face tightened.

"Don't."

"You were supposed to complete a simple task."

My father's expression hardened.

"What task?"

Victor ignored him.

"You were supposed to enter the Brooks family."

My breathing became uneven.

I already knew where this was going.

But I needed to hear it.

"Why?"

Victor looked at me.

"Because your father had something I needed."

My father stepped forward.

"Don't involve her."

Victor smiled.

"Still protecting her."

Then he looked at me.

"Your father spent years hiding a project."

My father became completely still.

A project.

That word.

It wasn't a mistake.

It meant something.

"What project?"

Victor didn't answer.

Instead, he reached into his coat.

Everyone reacted immediately.

But he only pulled out a small envelope.

He held it toward me.

"This belongs to you."

I didn't move.

My father looked at the envelope.

And his face changed.

That was enough.

Because whatever was inside...

My father knew about it.

"Dad?"

He looked away.

"Don't open it."

My heart sank.

"Why?"

He didn't answer.

"Why shouldn't I open it?"

My father took a breath.

"Because some things are hidden for a reason."

I looked at him.

"No."

My voice became stronger.

"Things are hidden because someone doesn't want the truth known."

Nobody spoke.

I walked toward Victor.

My father immediately reached for my arm.

"Emma."

I stopped.

But I looked at him.

"For years, everyone has told me they were protecting me."

A pause.

"But nobody protected me from the lies."

My father's hand slowly dropped.

I took the envelope.

It was old.

Yellowed.

My name was written on the front.

Not my married name.

My childhood name.

Emma Brooks.

My fingers trembled.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of me.

But I wasn't alone.

I was a baby.

Held in my mother's arms.

And standing beside us was Victor Hale.

My blood ran cold.

I turned the photograph over.

There was writing on the back.

A sentence.

My mother's handwriting.

"If Victor finds this, it means Charles failed."

I looked at my father.

His face had gone pale.

"Mom wrote this?"

He didn't answer.

I read the rest.

"Emma must never know the truth about what happened the night she was born."

I stopped breathing.

The hospital noise disappeared.

Everything disappeared.

"What happened the night I was born?"

My father closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked older than I had ever seen him.

Victor spoke quietly.

"Your father didn't tell you because he was afraid."

I looked at him.

"Afraid of what?"

Victor smiled.

"Afraid you would discover who your real family was."

I felt anger rise inside me.

"Don't play games."

"I'm not."

He looked at Dominic.

"Ask your husband."

Everyone turned.

Dominic froze.

My heart sank.

"What does Dominic know?"

Nobody answered.

Then Dominic slowly stepped forward.

"Emma..."

I shook my head.

"No."

His eyes filled with regret.

"Please listen."

"No."

My voice broke.

"Not another secret."

He swallowed.

Then said the words I never expected.

"I wasn't sent to spy on your father."

A pause.

"I was sent to find you."

The room went silent.

My father immediately looked at him.

"What did you say?"

Dominic looked at me.

"I didn't know why at first."

His voice cracked.

"But then I found out who you really were."

I couldn't move.

"What do you mean?"

Dominic reached into his pocket.

He pulled out his phone.

His hands were shaking.

"There is one thing Victor never told you."

Victor's expression changed.

For the first time.

He looked worried.

Dominic unlocked his phone.

Opened a hidden file.

And turned the screen toward me.

My eyes moved to the image.

And the moment I saw the person in the photograph...

May you like

I realized the biggest secret had never been about my father.

It had been about my mother...
