Chapter 4 - The Name He Tried To Hide

Dominic stared at his phone like he had just seen a ghost.

His hand tightened around the device.

The confidence he carried when he walked into the hospital disappeared in seconds.

"Who is it?" Linda asked.

He didn't answer.

"Dominic?"

Still nothing.

I watched his face carefully.

Because for the first time since this nightmare began, I saw something I had been waiting for.

Fear.

Not the kind people show when they are angry.

The kind they show when the truth finally catches up with them.

My father noticed too.

"Answer it."

Dominic looked at him.

"What?"

"You heard me."

The area outside the hospital became completely silent.

A few minutes earlier, Dominic had been standing there like he controlled everything.

Now he looked like a man trying to find a way out.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, he answered.

"Hello?"

He turned away from us.

But it didn't matter.

His face told the story.

"Yes."

A pause.

"No, that isn't possible."

Another pause.

Then his voice became lower.

"Who told you that?"

My father watched him without moving.

I held Leo closer.

My son's tiny fingers wrapped around mine.

And suddenly I realized something painful.

My child had been born into a situation I never imagined.

A situation where his father had secrets.

A situation where his grandmother protected those secrets.

A situation where the person I trusted most had become the person I needed protection from.

Dominic ended the call.

Slowly.

He looked back at us.

My father spoke first.

"Who was it?"

"Nobody."

The answer came immediately.

Too quickly.

My father shook his head.

"That is not true."

Dominic looked frustrated.

"You don't get to interrogate me."

I almost laughed.

Because that was exactly what he had been doing to me for months.

Making decisions.

Controlling conversations.

Deciding what information I deserved to know.

But now someone else was asking questions.

And he hated it.

My father opened the old folder again.

The papers inside moved slightly in the wind.

"Seven years ago," my father said calmly, "you were involved in something that was never fully explained."

Dominic's eyes moved to the folder.

"What are you talking about?"

"I think you know."

Linda stepped forward.

"Charles, this is ridiculous."

My father looked at her.

And for the first time, she stopped smiling.

"Linda."

The way he said her name made her freeze.

"You know exactly what this is about."

I looked between them.

"You know her?"

My father didn't answer immediately.

That scared me.

Because my father always answered me.

Always.

"Dad?"

He looked at me.

"I met Linda before you married Dominic."

My stomach dropped.

"What?"

Dominic looked angry.

"You never told her?"

My father ignored him.

"I didn't think it was relevant at the time."

"Not relevant?"

My voice cracked.

"My husband’s mother knew you before I married him, and you never told me?"

My father looked down.

"I was trying to protect you."

I hated that sentence.

Because everyone kept saying it.

Protect you.

Protect you.

But nobody asked if I wanted protection.

Nobody asked if I wanted the truth.

I looked at Dominic.

"What happened seven years ago?"

He didn't answer.

That was the answer.

My father pulled out a photograph from the folder.

It was old.

A picture of a younger Dominic.

Standing beside another man.

I looked closer.

Then I saw the location.

A government building.

"Dad..."

My father handed me the photograph.

"Your husband wasn't who he said he was when you met him."

Dominic immediately stepped forward.

"That's enough."

My father's security team moved slightly.

Not aggressively.

Just enough to remind everyone that this conversation was not going to be controlled by Dominic anymore.

"You don't get to decide when the truth ends," my father said.

Dominic stared at him.

"You have no idea what you're doing."

My father looked at him.

"No."

A pause.

"I know exactly what I'm doing."

Then he turned to me.

"Emma, I need you to understand something."

I waited.

"When Dominic met you, he already knew who your father was."

The words hit harder than I expected.

I felt the blood leave my face.

"No."

My father didn't look away.

"Yes."

I shook my head.

"That's impossible."

Dominic had always acted like my father was ordinary.

Like he barely cared about my family.

Like he thought my father's quiet lifestyle was proof that he was insignificant.

But now...

That didn't make sense.

"Why?"

The question escaped before I could stop it.

"Why would he hide that?"

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

The answer was worse than any explanation.

Dominic looked at me.

"Emma, listen to me."

I turned toward him.

"How long?"

He stopped.

"What?"

"How long did you know?"

His silence was enough.

I felt something inside me break.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just quietly.

Like a door closing.

"Before we met?"

He looked away.

"Yes."

The honesty shocked me more than the lie.

I stepped back.

"You knew my father."

"Emma—"

"You knew exactly who he was."

"Yes."

"And you still made jokes about him?"

Dominic's face changed.

"That was complicated."

I looked at him.

"No."

My voice became stronger.

"It wasn't complicated."

"You lied."

A long silence followed.

Then Linda spoke.

"Dominic did what he had to do."

I turned toward her.

"What does that mean?"

She didn't answer.

My father did.

"It means they were watching you."

The words froze me.

"What?"

My father looked at Dominic.

"Tell her."

Dominic said nothing.

"Tell my daughter why you approached her."

Still nothing.

My father took a breath.

"Or I will."

Dominic suddenly moved.

Fast.

He grabbed the folder from my father's hand.

For a second, everyone froze.

Then one of the men beside my father stepped forward.

But my father raised his hand.

"Let him."

I stared.

"Dad?"

My father looked at Dominic.

"Because he knows something else."

Dominic held the folder tightly.

His eyes were no longer angry.

They were desperate.

"You don't understand."

My father said nothing.

Dominic looked at me.

"I never wanted this to happen."

My heart hurt.

Because that sentence wasn't an apology.

It was an excuse.

"What didn't you want?"

He looked at Leo.

Then at me.

Then at the folder.

"I never wanted you to find out why I married you."

The world stopped.

I couldn't breathe.

My father became completely still.

Linda looked terrified.

And Dominic realized too late that he had said the one thing he could never take back.

"What did you say?" I whispered.

He opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, his phone rang again.

This time, he didn't look afraid.

He looked defeated.

He stared at the screen.

Then slowly turned the phone toward us.

There was only one name displayed.

A name I had never seen before.

May you like

A name that made my father's face change instantly.

Because my father recognized who was calling...
