Chapter 7 - The Truth They Could No Longer Hide

The door opened.

And the person standing outside said my name.

"Olivia."

My entire body froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it thousands of times.

At family dinners.

At business meetings.

During the months after my father disappeared.

The voice of the person who told me everything would be okay.

The voice of the person who held my hand when I thought my entire world had collapsed.

Arthur Bennett.

My father's closest friend.

The man who became my family's protector after my father vanished.

The man who told me not to search for answers because some truths were too painful.

The man who had been standing beside me while I searched for the person responsible.

My heart sank.

Because he wasn't supposed to be here.

Not now.

Not after everything we had uncovered.

Arthur looked older than I remembered.

His hair was completely gray.

His face carried years of exhaustion.

But his eyes were the same.

Calm.

Controlled.

The same eyes that had convinced me he was safe.

"Arthur..."

My voice barely came out.

Julian immediately stood.

"You."

Arthur looked at him.

And something passed between them.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Like they both understood something the rest of us didn't.

Marcus noticed it too.

"You know each other."

Arthur didn't answer.

That silence was enough.

I looked at Julian.

Then at Arthur.

The two men who had been connected to the biggest betrayal of my life.

"You both knew."

Nobody spoke.

I felt something inside me break.

Not because I was shocked.

Because deep down, I had already known.

The truth had been waiting.

I just hadn't wanted to open the door.

Arthur slowly walked into the room.

The hospital lights reflected against his tired face.

"Olivia, you need to listen to me."

I almost laughed.

Because that was always what people said before they changed your entire reality.

Listen to me.

Trust me.

I can explain.

Everyone had explanations.

Nobody had answers.

"You had years to explain."

My voice was colder than I expected.

"You had years to tell me what happened to my father."

Arthur looked down.

And that movement told me everything.

He wasn't innocent.

Maybe he wasn't the person who started it.

But he knew.

He had always known.

"Why?" I asked.

The word came out quietly.

"Why did you let me believe he abandoned me?"

Arthur closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked like the man I remembered.

The man who cared about my family.

The man who used to call me his daughter even though we weren't related.

Then he opened his eyes.

And I saw the truth.

"I was trying to keep you alive."

The room went silent.

Julian frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Arthur looked at him.

"You really don't know."

Julian's expression changed.

"Know what?"

Arthur ignored him.

His eyes stayed on me.

"Your father didn't disappear because he wanted to."

My breathing stopped.

"I know."

"No."

Arthur shook his head.

"You don't."

He walked closer.

"Your father discovered someone inside the company was moving money."

Marcus stepped forward.

"How much?"

Arthur looked at him.

"Enough to destroy everything."

Dr. Vance frowned.

"Why didn't he go to the board?"

Arthur laughed quietly.

A sad sound.

"Because the board was already compromised."

The room became silent.

I looked at Julian.

Because suddenly I understood.

The company wasn't attacked from outside.

It wasn't stolen.

It was slowly taken apart from within.

By people who had access.

By people everyone trusted.

"Who?" I asked.

Arthur looked at me.

"I don't know all of them."

That answer frustrated me.

"You expect me to believe that?"

Arthur nodded.

"I expect you to understand that your father trusted the wrong people."

My hands tightened.

"Did he trust you?"

The question hurt him.

I saw it.

For the first time.

Arthur looked wounded.

"Yes."

A single word.

But it carried years of guilt.

"He trusted me."

Julian stepped forward.

"Then why did you hide everything?"

Arthur looked at him.

"Because your father asked me to."

Nobody moved.

I stared at him.

"My father asked you?"

Arthur nodded.

"The night before he disappeared, he came to me."

His voice became quieter.

"He had already discovered the financial records were altered."

Dr. Vance looked at the documents.

"The same method used on Olivia's medical records."

Arthur nodded.

"Exactly."

The pieces started connecting.

The medical records.

The company documents.

The divorce.

Everything.

It was all the same strategy.

Destroy my credibility.

Make me look unstable.

Remove me from the company.

And take control.

But one question remained.

"Why did he leave?"

Arthur looked at me.

"He didn't."

The room went completely silent.

I felt like the air disappeared.

"What?"

Arthur swallowed.

"Your father was taken."

Nobody spoke.

Even Julian looked shocked.

"Taken by who?"

Arthur looked toward the hallway.

Like he was afraid someone was listening.

Then he whispered:

"The person who benefited most from his disappearance."

My mind immediately returned to the photograph.

The person beside my family.

The person who had comforted me.

The person who had helped me survive.

"Who?"

Arthur looked at me.

And before he could answer, his phone started ringing.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

Not fear.

Panic.

Real panic.

He answered.

Nobody could hear the voice on the other end.

But we watched Arthur's expression collapse.

"No."

A pause.

"That's impossible."

Another pause.

Then he looked directly at me.

And I knew whatever he heard was about me.

"Where?"

He listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

Julian stepped closer.

"What happened?"

Arthur looked at me.

"Your father is alive."

The room froze.

My heart stopped.

For years, I had imagined this moment.

The moment someone would tell me my father was coming home.

But I never imagined it would happen after uncovering lies.

After betrayal.

After discovering that everyone around me had hidden pieces of the truth.

"Where is he?" I whispered.

Arthur looked terrified.

"Olivia..."

"Where?"

He hesitated.

Then he pulled out his phone.

"There is one thing you need to see first."

He opened a video file.

The screen showed a dark room.

A man sitting in a chair.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

My father.

I covered my mouth.

Because after all these years...

He looked directly into the camera.

And the first words he said were:

"Olivia, if you are watching this, it means Arthur failed to keep you away from the truth..."

Then the video cut.

And a new message appeared on Arthur's phone.

May you like

One sentence.

"Bring Olivia to the place where her father disappeared."
