Chapter 2 - The Divorce Lie That Destroyed My Name

The first thing I noticed was Julian’s hands.

They were shaking.

Only slightly.

Most people would have missed it.

But I had spent fourteen years watching those hands sign contracts, hold mine during difficult moments, and close doors when he didn’t want to talk.

Julian Carter was a man who controlled every room he entered.

He never panicked.

He never hesitated.

But standing in that hospital hallway, staring at the sealed envelope in Dr. Adrian Vance’s hand, he looked like a man who had just realized the ground beneath him was not as solid as he thought.

Dr. Vance slowly removed the first document.

The hallway noise continued around us.

Nurses walking.

Phones ringing.

Families laughing softly.

But our small group stood completely still.

Julian looked at the papers.

Then at Sienna.

Then back at Dr. Vance.

"What exactly is this?"

His voice was different now.

The confidence was gone.

Dr. Vance didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at me.

"Olivia, you deserve to hear this first."

Julian’s jaw tightened.

"Why would she need to hear anything?"

That question almost made me laugh.

Almost.

Because for the past year, Julian had made sure everyone heard his version of everything.

He had told people why our marriage ended.

He had told people why I left the company.

He had told people why he needed to move forward.

But he had never once asked what I had lost.

Dr. Vance placed two reports on the counter.

"The documents submitted during your divorce proceedings were not the original laboratory records."

Julian stared at him.

"What are you talking about?"

Dr. Vance tapped the first page.

"This report was generated by the laboratory twelve months before your divorce."

Then he tapped the second.

"This copy was submitted as evidence during the divorce process."

Julian leaned closer.

At first, confusion.

Then recognition.

Then something much worse.

Fear.

The dates were different.

The reference numbers were different.

The medical summary had been rewritten.

I watched his expression change as he realized what he was seeing.

Because Julian knew paperwork.

He built his entire career around paperwork.

He knew when something was wrong.

"That's impossible," he said quietly.

Dr. Vance looked at him.

"No. It was intentional."

Sienna immediately stepped forward.

"Adrian, please."

Her voice was almost pleading.

That was the first time I had heard fear in her voice.

Not guilt.

Not embarrassment.

Fear.

Julian turned toward her.

"Sienna?"

She avoided his eyes.

And that tiny movement told me more than any confession could have.

She knew.

She had known all along.

A year earlier, I had stood in a courtroom listening to Julian’s attorney describe me as unstable.

Emotionally exhausted.

Unable to make rational decisions.

They used my fertility treatments against me.

They used my grief against me.

They used every vulnerable moment I had ever shared with Julian and turned those moments into weapons.

The woman who once promised to protect me sat beside him during those meetings.

Sienna.

My best friend.

My closest employee.

The person who knew every detail of my life.

She knew exactly where to hurt me.

And she helped him do it.

The divorce papers had arrived on a Tuesday morning.

I remembered everything about that day.

The sound of the envelope landing on the kitchen counter.

The way Julian refused to sit down.

The way he looked at the floor instead of my eyes.

"I can't keep pretending this is working."

That was what he said.

Not "I'm sorry."

Not "I made a mistake."

Just an explanation.

Like ending our marriage was a business decision.

Then came the accusations.

He said I had changed.

He said I had become obsessed with having a child.

He said my emotional state had affected my judgment.

And the worst part?

People believed him.

Because Julian was calm.

Because Julian was successful.

Because Julian looked like the kind of man who would never hurt anyone.

Nobody saw the man who stayed awake at night planning how to remove me from the company we built together.

Nobody saw the man who had already started building a replacement life.

With my best friend.

Dr. Vance picked up another document.

"There is something else."

Julian looked up.

"What?"

"The medical records were not the only documents altered."

My heart stopped.

Not because I was surprised.

Because I already suspected.

But hearing it aloud made it real.

Dr. Vance turned the page.

"Four months before the divorce was finalized, several internal company documents were modified."

Julian’s expression changed.

The baby in Sienna’s arms moved slightly.

She adjusted the blanket.

A small, ordinary action.

But everything about that moment felt wrong.

Because while she held a child and pretended to have a perfect family, the truth was standing right in front of us.

"What documents?" Julian asked.

Dr. Vance looked at me.

"Documents connected to ownership transfer."

The hallway suddenly felt colder.

I remembered that too.

The company.

The business I helped build.

The company started from my father’s savings and my own business plan.

The company Julian always described as his dream.

After the divorce, somehow, decisions had been made.

Temporary changes became permanent.

Votes were altered.

Agreements appeared.

And suddenly, the woman who helped create everything was no longer in control.

At the time, I thought Julian had simply outplayed me.

I thought he had taken advantage of my emotional state.

I thought I had been too trusting.

But now I understood.

It had never been about the divorce.

The divorce was only the distraction.

Julian wasn’t just leaving me.

He was removing me.

Sienna finally spoke.

"You don't understand."

I looked at her.

For the first time in months, I allowed myself to really see her.

Not the woman I remembered.

Not the friend I loved.

The person standing there.

"Then explain it."

My voice was calm.

That seemed to scare her more than anger would have.

Sienna looked at Julian.

He looked back at her.

And in that moment, I saw something I had never seen before.

They weren't united.

They were afraid of each other.

Julian lowered his voice.

"What did you do?"

Sienna's face changed.

"Don't do this."

"What did you do?"

His voice became sharper.

The baby started crying softly.

The sound broke through the tension.

Sienna immediately looked down and tried to calm him.

But Julian wasn't looking at the child.

He was looking at the woman beside him.

The woman he believed had helped him win.

The woman he believed had given him the life he wanted.

Dr. Vance quietly gathered the papers.

"The laboratory findings are only the beginning."

Julian looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

"It means someone wanted Olivia removed from your life permanently."

My breathing stopped.

Julian stared.

"Someone?"

Dr. Vance nodded.

"Someone who had access to your private records."

Nobody spoke.

Because we all knew what that meant.

This wasn't a random betrayal.

This was planned.

Organized.

Carefully executed.

Julian looked at Sienna.

And for the first time, I saw him realize something.

The woman he chose might not have been the person he thought she was.

The elevator behind us suddenly opened.

A man stepped out.

He looked directly at Julian.

Then at me.

Then at the documents in Dr. Vance’s hand.

His face changed.

"Olivia..."

I had never seen him before.

But he knew my name.

May you like

And then he said the one sentence that made Julian turn completely pale.

"Your husband never told you who originally ordered the changes to your records."
