Chapter 4 - The Envelope That Changed Everything

"Olivia cannot know the truth about what happened the night her father disappeared."

The voice on the phone was older.

Tired.

But familiar.

A voice I had spent years trying to forget.

My body went completely still.

Because there was only one person who could make Sienna lose all the color in her face.

Only one person whose name could turn a hospital hallway into a place filled with silence.

My father.

I stared at the phone in Sienna’s hand.

For years, I believed he was gone.

Not dead.

Not officially.

Just gone.

And sometimes, that was worse.

Because death gave you an ending.

Disappearance gave you questions.

Questions that never stopped.

Questions that followed you into every room.

Why did he leave?

Why didn’t he call?

Why didn’t he come back?

Why did everyone around me refuse to explain?

My father had been the first person who believed in me.

Before Julian.

Before the company.

Before anyone knew my name.

He was the one who gave me the money to start my first business plan.

He was the one who told me I had something special.

Then one night, he disappeared.

And everyone told me the same thing.

He had problems.

He needed time.

He chose to leave.

I never believed that.

But I had no proof.

Until now.

Sienna slowly lowered the phone.

Her fingers were trembling.

Julian looked at her.

"What did he say?"

She didn’t answer.

"Sienna."

His voice was sharp.

"What did he say?"

She looked at me.

And for a second, I saw the woman who used to be my best friend.

The woman who knew my childhood stories.

The woman who knew exactly how much my father’s disappearance hurt me.

Then she looked away.

Because she knew.

She knew she was standing beside the people who had caused that pain.

"I need to leave."

She turned toward the elevator.

But Marcus stepped in front of her.

"No."

Sienna stopped.

"Move."

"No."

The confidence she usually carried was gone.

"You don't understand what you're doing."

Marcus looked at her calmly.

"I understand exactly what I'm doing."

Julian watched the exchange.

"You two knew each other before today."

Nobody responded.

That silence was enough.

Julian laughed once.

But there was no humor in it.

"How many secrets are there?"

No one answered.

And that was the moment Julian finally understood something.

He had not built a perfect life.

He had built a life around people who were hiding things from him.

Dr. Vance picked up the documents again.

"Olivia, there is something you need to see."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He opened the envelope completely.

Inside were copies of medical records.

Financial reports.

Private messages.

Everything that had been used to destroy my reputation.

But this time, there were notes attached.

Dates.

Names.

Signatures.

Evidence.

Dr. Vance placed one page in front of me.

"This is the original fertility report."

I looked down.

The words blurred for a second.

Not because I couldn’t read them.

Because I already knew what they meant.

My hands tightened around the paper.

The report was completely different from the one Julian used during our divorce.

The original results were normal.

There was no medical reason saying I couldn't have children.

No reason saying my body had failed.

No reason saying I was the problem.

The entire foundation of our divorce was built on a lie.

I looked at Julian.

He looked away.

And that hurt more than anger would have.

Because deep down, I had always hoped he didn't know.

I had hoped maybe he had been manipulated.

Maybe he was fooled.

Maybe the man I loved was still somewhere inside the person who destroyed me.

But the look on his face told me the truth.

He had known enough.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

"You believed it."

My voice was quiet.

Julian looked at me.

"Olivia..."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You believed I was broken."

His face changed.

"I didn't know."

That answer was almost worse.

Because he wasn’t saying he didn’t do it.

He was saying he didn’t know enough.

"I trusted you."

The words came out before I could stop them.

"I spent fourteen years trusting you."

Julian looked down.

For the first time since I met him, he looked ashamed.

But shame was not the same as regret.

Not yet.

Sienna stepped closer.

"Olivia..."

I turned toward her.

She stopped immediately.

Because she saw my expression.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Something colder.

Distance.

"You sat with me while I cried."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I know."

"You listened to me talk about my marriage."

"I know."

"You knew how much losing a child hurt me."

Sienna closed her eyes.

And that was the moment I realized something.

She wasn’t just helping Julian.

She was using the most painful parts of my life against me.

"I never wanted it to go this far."

I looked at her.

"But it did."

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus quietly said:

"There is one more thing."

I turned.

"What?"

He looked at Julian.

"Your company was not taken because of the divorce."

Julian frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Marcus removed a folder from his briefcase.

"It means the divorce was part of a larger plan."

Julian took the folder.

He opened it.

His eyes moved across the pages.

Slowly.

Then quickly.

Then with disbelief.

"What is this?"

Marcus answered.

"Proof that someone inside your company was preparing a takeover before your divorce was even filed."

Julian looked up.

"Who?"

Marcus didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at me.

"I think you already know the name."

My heart sank.

Because there was only one person who had everything to gain.

Someone who knew my family.

Someone who knew Julian.

Someone who had access to our business.

Someone who had been close enough to destroy us without raising suspicion.

I looked at Sienna.

She immediately looked away.

That was the answer.

But before I could speak, Julian’s phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

"What is it?" I asked.

He didn't respond.

He just stared.

Then he handed me the phone.

There was a message.

One sentence.

One name.

And a warning.

May you like

The message read:

"Ask Olivia why her father disappeared the night he discovered what Julian and Sienna were planning."
