Chapter 9 - The Woman Who Knew The Truth

The room went silent.

Not the kind of silence that came from shock.

The kind of silence that came from fear.

Everyone was looking at Eleanor.

And for the first time since I had known her, Eleanor Montgomery looked like she had nowhere to hide.

The photograph remained on Ethan’s phone screen.

A frozen moment from the past.

A moment that should have stayed buried.

I looked at Ethan.

His face had lost all color.

“Who is that?”

My voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Ethan didn’t answer.

He couldn’t.

His eyes stayed locked on the picture.

Finally, Thomas stepped closer.

“Show me.”

Ethan hesitated.

Then he handed him the phone.

Thomas looked down.

And the expression on his face confirmed everything.

He knew.

That terrified me more than anything.

Because every time someone recognized something in this story, another piece of my life disappeared.

“What is happening?”

I demanded.

Thomas looked at me.

His eyes were filled with regret.

“Sophia…”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I am done hearing my name followed by an explanation.”

The words came out sharper than I expected.

But I meant every word.

“I spent my entire life being protected from the truth.”

I looked around the room.

“My mother disappeared.”

I pointed toward Claire.

“My father was alive.”

Then I looked at Eleanor.

“The Montgomery family knew things they never told me.”

My voice trembled.

“And everyone kept deciding what I was allowed to know.”

Nobody spoke.

“Not anymore.”

Claire looked at me with tears in her eyes.

And slowly, she nodded.

“You’re right.”

The admission surprised me.

“I should have trusted you.”

My expression softened slightly.

But only slightly.

“You should have.”

She looked down.

“I thought if you knew everything, they would come after you.”

“Who?”

Claire looked toward the photograph.

“That person.”

I turned toward Ethan.

“Who is in the picture?”

Ethan swallowed.

Then he looked at Eleanor.

And that was when I knew.

The answer involved her.

“Mother.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Ethan…”

“No.”

His voice was different.

Stronger.

“You owe us the truth.”

For years, Eleanor had controlled every conversation.

Every room.

Every decision.

But tonight, she looked like someone trapped by her own secrets.

She sat down slowly.

And for a moment, she looked older than I had ever seen her.

“I was twenty-seven when I met Claire.”

My eyes widened.

“You knew my mother before?”

Eleanor nodded.

“Yes.”

Claire remained silent.

Because she had already known this part.

“You weren’t enemies.”

Eleanor looked at me.

“No.”

Her voice was quiet.

“We were friends.”

The revelation hit harder than I expected.

My mother and Eleanor?

Friends?

The two women who represented completely different worlds?

“How?”

Eleanor looked toward the window.

“Because before everything changed, we believed we could fix things.”

The words sounded familiar.

Everyone in this family had believed they could control something they couldn't.

“What things?”

Eleanor looked at Thomas.

Then Claire.

Then me.

“Your grandfather discovered information about powerful people.”

The same story again.

The same hidden truth.

But this time, something felt different.

Because Eleanor was not protecting herself.

She was admitting guilt.

“He created a private archive.”

She continued.

“Documents. Records. Evidence.”

“Evidence against who?”

Her eyes moved to mine.

“People who could destroy anyone who threatened them.”

The room became colder.

“And my mother found it?”

Eleanor nodded.

“She found out someone was trying to take it.”

Claire whispered.

“And she tried to stop them.”

Eleanor looked at her.

“Yes.”

The pain between them was obvious.

Two women who had once trusted each other.

Two women who had made choices that changed my life.

“What does the picture show?”

I asked.

Ethan finally spoke.

“It’s my father.”

Everyone turned toward him.

Richard Montgomery.

The man who had built the Montgomery empire.

The man who had always been described as untouchable.

The man who was not in the room.

“He was meeting with your mother.”

Ethan looked at me.

“Six months before she disappeared.”

I stared at him.

“My mother met Richard?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Nobody answered.

And that was the answer.

Because they knew.

They knew exactly why.

Thomas stepped forward.

“Because Richard wanted the archive.”

I looked at him.

“And my mother refused.”

Thomas nodded.

“She knew what would happen if someone like him controlled it.”

Ethan looked confused.

“My father was involved?”

Thomas looked at him.

“Yes.”

The pain on Ethan’s face was immediate.

Because he had spent his entire life believing his father was a powerful but honorable man.

Now that image was breaking.

“You’re saying my father tried to hurt Sophia’s family?”

Thomas didn’t answer immediately.

And that hesitation was enough.

Ethan stepped back.

“No.”

His voice was barely a whisper.

“No, that doesn’t make sense.”

Claire looked at him.

“I wanted to believe that too.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You knew?”

Claire nodded.

“I found out after Sophia was born.”

The room froze.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because Richard already knew about you.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“About me?”

Claire nodded.

“He knew you existed.”

My hands went cold.

“And?”

Claire looked at my sons.

“And he knew about them before you ever arrived at the Montgomery estate.”

The words hit like a physical blow.

I stepped back.

“No.”

Claire moved toward me.

“Sophia—”

“No.”

My voice broke.

“You’re saying he knew?”

“Yes.”

The anger came instantly.

Five years.

Five years of hiding.

Five years of fear.

Five years believing I had escaped.

But someone had known.

Someone had always known.

Ethan looked devastated.

“My father knew I had children?”

Thomas answered.

“Yes.”

“And he did nothing?”

Thomas looked away.

“He did something.”

Everyone froze.

“What?”

Thomas’s voice became low.

“He tried to make sure you never came back.”

The mansion fell silent.

Even Eleanor looked horrified.

“What are you saying?”

Thomas looked at me.

“The reason you disappeared wasn’t only because Eleanor threatened you.”

My heart started racing.

“There was someone else.”

A memory flashed through my mind.

The night I left.

The car following me.

The strange phone calls.

The feeling that someone was watching.

I had always thought it was fear.

Maybe it wasn’t.

“Who?”

Thomas opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, the mansion lights suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the security alarm began screaming.

Ethan immediately moved toward me and the boys.

“What’s happening?”

Nobody answered.

A guard’s voice came through the intercom.

“Mr. Montgomery.”

Static.

Then silence.

Ethan grabbed the phone.

“Report.”

A pause.

Then the guard’s voice returned.

But it sounded different.

Terrified.

“Sir…”

“What?”

The voice shook.

“Someone is inside the archive room.”

My blood went cold.

The archive room.

The room everyone said did not exist.

Thomas turned pale.

“That’s impossible.”

Eleanor stood suddenly.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

Because she looked like she knew exactly what was happening.

“What?”

She stared toward the hidden hallway behind the old library.

Then she whispered:

“The room was never empty.”

A loud crash echoed from somewhere inside the mansion.

May you like

The archive door opened.

And someone inside whispered my name.
