Chapter 2 - The Sons The Montgomery Family Never Knew Existed

Ethan Montgomery dropped his wedding ring into his glass of champagne.

"Those boys are mine."

The crowd went silent.

Ethan stepped away from Caroline.

Then Eleanor Montgomery walked down the marble stairs holding an old photograph she had hidden for five years.

Behind the picture was one sentence:

"She never left alone."

I watched the entire Montgomery estate freeze around me.

For five years, I imagined this moment.

I imagined Ethan seeing our sons for the first time.

I imagined Eleanor realizing that the woman she had thrown away had built a life she could never control.

But I never imagined silence would feel this powerful.

The kind of silence that made hundreds of wealthy people forget how to breathe.

Liam stood on my left, holding my hand tightly.

Noah looked around curiously, unaware that every person in the garden was staring at him.

Caleb simply looked at Ethan.

Like he already knew.

Like somewhere deep inside, a five-year-old child understood that the man standing in front of him was not a stranger.

He was his father.

Ethan did not move.

His eyes stayed locked on the three boys.

The same gray eyes stared back at him.

I watched his face change.

First confusion.

Then disbelief.

Then something I had never seen from Ethan Montgomery before.

Fear.

Not fear of me.

Fear of what he had lost.

"Sophia..."

My name came out like a question.

Like he was trying to understand how I could possibly exist in front of him after everything.

I looked at him calmly.

"Hello, Ethan."

Caroline Hastings stood beside him in her white wedding gown.

Five years younger than me.

Beautiful.

Elegant.

Perfectly chosen.

The woman Eleanor had selected to stand beside the Montgomery name.

But for the first time that day, Caroline did not look like she had won.

She looked like she had walked into a room where everyone knew a secret except her.

"Ethan," she whispered.

He didn't answer.

His eyes never left the boys.

A photographer lowered his camera.

A waiter stopped carrying champagne.

Even the musicians had stopped playing.

The entire wedding had become a courtroom.

And I was standing in the center.

Eleanor finally moved.

Slowly.

Carefully.

She descended the marble stairs with the same confidence she had always carried.

The woman who could make executives nervous.

The woman who could destroy reputations with a phone call.

The woman who once looked at my pregnancy as a problem to be solved.

She stopped several feet away from me.

Her eyes moved from my face.

To Liam.

To Noah.

To Caleb.

Then back to me.

"You knew."

Her voice was quiet.

Dangerously quiet.

I smiled slightly.

"Yes."

Her jaw tightened.

"You kept them from us."

I almost laughed.

From us.

Not from me.

That was exactly who Eleanor Montgomery had always been.

Everything belonged to the Montgomery family.

Their money.

Their reputation.

Their future.

Even children.

"I protected them," I said.

Eleanor looked offended.

"Protected them from their own family?"

I looked around at the guests watching us.

Then back at her.

"Yes."

A few people gasped.

Ethan finally found his voice.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

That question hurt more than I expected.

Not because I wanted to answer.

Because part of me had waited five years for him to ask.

I looked at the man I once loved.

The man who signed divorce papers while I was carrying his children.

The man who never called.

Never searched.

Never asked if I was alive.

"You really want to know?"

His expression changed.

"I deserve to know."

I took a slow breath.

"No, Ethan."

The words surprised him.

"You wanted to know when it was convenient."

The crowd became uncomfortable.

Good.

For the first time, Ethan Montgomery was standing somewhere he could not control.

"You disappeared," he said quietly.

I stared at him.

"No."

My voice remained calm.

"You watched me leave."

The memory came back instantly.

The Montgomery mansion.

The cold hallway.

Eleanor standing beside Ethan.

The divorce papers.

The tears I refused to let fall.

I remembered asking Ethan one question.

"Do you believe her?"

And Ethan said nothing.

That silence destroyed everything.

"I waited for you," I said.

Ethan looked down.

"You didn't come."

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone knew the truth.

A powerful man who had everything.

And a woman who had nothing.

Except the courage to walk away.

Caroline slowly stepped back.

"I think I need to understand something."

Her voice trembled.

"Ethan... you have children?"

Ethan looked at her.

For the first time all day, he looked like a man caught between two lives.

"I didn't know."

Caroline stared at him.

"You didn't know?"

Her eyes moved toward me.

Then the boys.

Then back to Ethan.

"You didn't know you had three children?"

The question hit harder than any accusation.

Ethan had no answer.

Because there was none.

Then Liam tugged my dress.

"Mama."

I looked down.

"Can we go home soon?"

My heart broke.

Because he didn't understand.

He didn't understand why strangers were staring.

Why adults were whispering.

Why his father looked like he might cry.

I knelt beside him.

"We can leave whenever you want."

Ethan heard that.

His face changed.

"Wait."

I looked up.

"Please."

That word.

From Ethan Montgomery.

The man who had never begged for anything.

I stood.

"What?"

He swallowed.

"I want to talk to them."

I looked at my sons.

Then back at him.

"You want to talk to them?"

"Yes."

"You want to meet them?"

His eyes filled slightly.

"I want to know them."

I almost believed him.

Almost.

But five years had taught me something.

Words were easy.

Actions were different.

Before I could answer, Eleanor interrupted.

"No."

Everyone turned.

She stood straight.

Cold again.

The old Eleanor returned.

"Ethan, this conversation will not happen here."

I looked at her.

"Why?"

She ignored me.

"This is your wedding day."

I smiled.

"Exactly."

My voice carried through the garden.

"The day your family wanted everyone to celebrate."

I looked at the guests.

"Maybe they should know what they are celebrating."

Eleanor's expression hardened.

"Sophia."

There was a warning in my name.

The same warning she used five years ago.

But it no longer worked.

"I spent five years being silent."

I stepped closer.

"I protected Ethan's reputation."

A pause.

"I protected your family's image."

Another pause.

"But I will not let you pretend my children don't exist."

The boys stood beside me.

Small.

Confident.

Unaware of the battle happening around them.

Ethan looked at them.

Then at me.

"I want proof."

The words escaped before he could stop them.

The garden went quiet again.

I looked at him.

"Proof?"

He immediately regretted it.

"No, that's not what I meant."

But it was already said.

And everyone heard.

I reached into my handbag.

The same bag I carried into the wedding.

The same bag Eleanor thought contained nothing but personal items.

I pulled out three documents.

Birth certificates.

I walked toward Ethan.

Then placed them in his hand.

His fingers shook.

He looked down.

The first name.

Liam Bennett.

Father:

Ethan Montgomery.

The second.

Noah Bennett.

Father:

Ethan Montgomery.

The third.

Caleb Bennett.

Father:

Ethan Montgomery.

Ethan stopped breathing.

The wedding guests whispered louder.

Caroline covered her mouth.

Eleanor looked like she had seen something impossible.

But then...

Something changed.

Because Eleanor was no longer looking at the birth certificates.

She was looking at me.

Not with anger.

Not with hatred.

With fear.

Real fear.

Like she remembered something I didn't know.

"Ethan," she whispered.

He looked up.

"What?"

Eleanor's eyes moved toward the mansion.

Toward the east wing.

The old private section of the house.

The section nobody entered.

"I need to tell you the truth about that night."

My expression changed.

"What night?"

Nobody answered.

Eleanor reached into her purse.

Pulled out an old envelope.

And on the front was my name.

But it was not my handwriting.

Because I had never seen that letter before.

Eleanor handed it to Ethan.

Then whispered:

"Your mother was not the only person who knew about these children."

Ethan opened the envelope.

His face changed after reading the first line.

Then he looked directly at me.

"Sophia..."

I took one step forward.

"What does it say?"

Ethan slowly turned the paper around.

May you like

And the first words I saw were:

"I know you are pregnant, and if Eleanor finds out, she will take the children..."
