Chapter 6 - The Truth Behind Ethan’s Betrayal

The message finally loaded.
I stared at the screen.
And I forgot how to breathe.
Because the name written beneath my mother's photograph was not a stranger.
It was someone I knew.
Someone who had been standing inside the Montgomery mansion all along.
Someone who had been protecting the truth while everyone else buried it.
Margaret Cole.
I looked up.
She was standing near the fireplace.
Silent.
Watching me.
"You."
The word escaped before I could stop it.
Everyone turned.
Margaret's expression changed.
Not because she was surprised.
Because she knew this moment would come.
"You were protecting my father?"
Her eyes lowered.
"Yes."
The room became completely still.
Ethan looked between us.
"Margaret..."
She shook her head.
"No more secrets."
For the first time that night, someone inside the Montgomery mansion said the words I had been waiting years to hear.
No more secrets.
I walked toward her.
"How long have you known?"
Margaret didn't answer immediately.
Then she said:
"Since the night your mother disappeared."
My heart tightened.
"Tell me everything."
Eleanor immediately stepped forward.
"Sophia, you don't know what you're asking."
I turned toward her.
"No."
My voice was calm.
"I know exactly what I'm asking."
I looked at the woman who spent five years controlling my life from a distance.
"I am asking why my mother left me."
A pause.
"I am asking why you knew about my children."
Another pause.
"And I am asking why everyone in this house thought they had the right to decide my life."
Eleanor looked away.
For once, she had no argument.
Margaret opened her bag and removed an old recording device.
"This belonged to your mother."
My hands froze.
A small black recorder.
Something so simple.
Something that carried a voice I hadn't heard in years.
"She left this for you."
I looked at it.
"Why didn't she give it to me herself?"
Margaret's eyes filled with sadness.
"Because she couldn't."
The words hurt.
Not because they surprised me.
Because some part of me had always hoped.
A small part.
A childish part.
That one day my mother would walk through a door and explain everything.
But she never did.
Margaret pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then a voice.
My mother's voice.
"Sophia..."
I closed my eyes.
And suddenly I was a child again.
Standing in the kitchen.
Listening to her sing.
Waiting for her to come home.
"If you are hearing this, then I am sorry."
My breathing became uneven.
"I am sorry I wasn't there when you needed me."
A tear slipped down my face.
"But I need you to know something. I never chose to leave you."
Ethan looked down.
Even he was affected.
My mother's voice continued.
"I discovered what Eleanor was planning. She wanted to separate Sophia from Ethan before the children were born."
The room became silent.
"I tried to stop her."
A pause.
"But I discovered something much bigger."
Margaret looked at Ethan.
Then Eleanor.
"The Montgomery family was being controlled by someone else."
Ethan frowned.
"What does that mean?"
The recording continued.
"Ethan was never the person making the decisions."
I looked at Ethan.
His expression changed.
"My daughter needs to understand this. The man she loved was not the enemy."
A pause.
"But he was not innocent either."
The words hit me.
Ethan looked like he expected them.
Like somewhere deep inside, he knew.
My mother's voice became quieter.
"He was manipulated."
The recording stopped.
Nobody moved.
Then Ethan whispered:
"Manipulated by who?"
Nobody answered.
Because everyone was looking at Eleanor.
But Eleanor shook her head.
"No."
Margaret stepped forward.
"Not Eleanor."
That surprised everyone.
"Then who?"
Margaret looked toward the photograph on the table.
The one with young Ethan.
The one with the unknown person beside him.
"The person who controlled this family before Eleanor ever did."
I looked at the picture.
"Who is that person?"
Margaret took a breath.
"Your grandfather."
The room froze.
Ethan stared at her.
"My grandfather died twenty years ago."
Margaret nodded.
"Yes."
"Then how could he control anything?"
She looked at him.
"Because before he died, he created a system."
I frowned.
"A system?"
"A group of people who protected the Montgomery name at any cost."
I felt a chill.
"And my mother found out?"
Margaret nodded.
"Your mother discovered they were willing to destroy anyone who threatened the family."
I looked at my sons.
The realization hit me.
They were never just hiding my children.
They were protecting an empire.
Ethan walked away from the table.
His hand moved through his hair.
"All these years..."
His voice broke.
"My mother made me believe Sophia abandoned me."
Eleanor looked at him.
"I was trying to save you."
"No."
Ethan turned.
"You were trying to save the Montgomery name."
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed her.
Because they were true.
I watched him.
The man I once loved.
The man who hurt me.
The man who had failed me.
And for the first time, I saw him understand.
Not just what happened.
What he allowed.
"I should have searched for you."
I didn't answer.
"I should have questioned everything."
Still nothing.
"I should have fought."
I looked at him.
"Yes."
One word.
But it carried five years of pain.
Ethan lowered his head.
"I know."
A strange silence followed.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But honesty.
Something our relationship never had.
Then Liam appeared beside me.
"Mama."
I looked down.
"Can we go home?"
My heart broke.
Because this mansion was never home.
Not for me.
Not for them.
I touched his hair.
"Yes."
Ethan looked up.
"No."
Everyone turned.
He immediately corrected himself.
"I mean..."
He stopped.
Because he knew he had no right to ask.
But he asked anyway.
"Can I see them again?"
I looked at my sons.
Then at him.
Before I answered, Eleanor's phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
And her face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
She answered.
"Hello?"
Nobody could hear the voice on the other end.
But whatever was said made her lose all color.
"What do you mean?"
A pause.
"No."
Another pause.
Then she whispered:
"That's impossible."
She slowly lowered the phone.
Ethan stepped closer.
"What happened?"
Eleanor looked at me.
Not him.
Me.
And that terrified me.
Because Eleanor Montgomery had never looked at me like that before.
"Your father..."
She stopped.
My heart raced.
"What about my father?"
Eleanor swallowed.
"He wants to meet you."
I froze.
Margaret looked shocked.
"That can't happen."
Ethan looked between them.
"Why?"
Nobody answered.
Then Eleanor whispered:
"Because the person who has been protecting him..."
She looked directly at me.
"...is the same person who tried to erase Sophia from this family."
The lights in the mansion suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
My sons grabbed my hands.
Someone moved upstairs.
A door opened.
Then a man's voice echoed through the darkness.
"Sophia Bennett..."
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
I had heard it before.
Not in person.
In my mother's recordings.
The man stepped into the light.
May you like
And he said:
"Your mother told you I was gone. She never told you why I had to disappear."
