Chapter 6 - The Maid Dorian Chose

Vincent did not accuse Elena.

That hurt more than if he had.

He simply looked at her.

Waiting.

“I applied through an agency,” she said.

Sophia remained beside him.

Adrian had been taken away under Marcus’s guard.

The shipyard suddenly felt too quiet.

Vincent asked, “Who interviewed you?”

Elena remembered.

“Mrs. Bell from household management.”

“Who approved you?”

She hesitated.

“Dorian.”

Vincent’s face remained unreadable.

Elena shook her head.

“I didn’t know him before I came here.”

Sophia touched Vincent’s arm.

“Adrian lies.”

“Yes,” Vincent said.

“But usually around something true.”

Back at the mansion, Marcus reviewed Elena’s employment file.

The agency recommendation was legitimate.

Her background check was real.

But one document had been altered.

Her application had originally been rejected.

Dorian reversed it personally.

Why?

They found the answer in Sophia’s old records.

Three years earlier, Elena’s younger brother, Mateo Marlow, had worked as a junior accountant for one of Dorian’s shell companies.

Elena stared at the name.

“My brother died three years ago.”

Vincent looked at her.

“How?”

“Hit-and-run.”

Marcus checked.

No arrest.

Mateo had died two weeks after downloading records related to the twins’ trust.

Elena sat down.

“I didn’t know.”

Dorian had hired her because of her brother.

Maybe he wanted to watch her.

Maybe he feared Mateo had told her something.

Or maybe—

Sophia suddenly asked, “Did Mateo ever give you anything?”

Elena thought.

“No.”

Then she remembered the storage box.

After Mateo died, his landlord sent Elena a box of belongings.

She had never unpacked most of it.

It was in her room upstairs.

They opened it together.

Clothes.

Books.

Receipts.

An old watch.

A photograph of Elena and Mateo as children.

Nothing.

Then Elena picked up the watch.

It did not tick.

The back was unusually thick.

Marcus opened it.

Inside was a microSD card.

Elena covered her mouth.

Mateo had left evidence.

The card contained spreadsheets, recorded calls, and account transfers.

Dorian’s theft.

Adrian’s secret payments.

And one document that changed everything.

A life insurance policy.

Sophia Starks.

Beneficiary: Lily and Rose.

Secondary trustee: Dorian Starks.

If Vincent became legally incapacitated or convicted of a violent felony, Dorian would control the twins’ estate until adulthood.

The entire conspiracy came into focus.

Adrian wanted Vincent destroyed.

Dorian wanted the money.

The twins were the key.

Terrorize them.

Drug them.

Make Vincent unstable.

Force a confession.

Remove him.

Then Dorian would control hundreds of millions.

Sophia looked at Elena.

“Your brother found it.”

Elena nodded through tears.

“And died because of it.”

Vincent’s voice hardened.

“Where is Dorian?”

Marcus checked every location.

Nothing.

Then one of the guards entered.

“Sir, police convoy transporting Adrian was hit.”

Vincent stood.

“What?”

“Two vehicles intercepted it.”

“Adrian?”

“Gone.”

Vincent stared.

“Guards?”

“Alive. Three injured.”

Marcus cursed.

Sophia whispered, “Dorian.”

Vincent nodded.

The brothers were together again.

But now the plan had failed.

Which meant desperate men would choose desperate options.

Vincent moved the twins to the mansion’s reinforced safe wing.

Sophia reunited with them.

That moment silenced everyone.

Lily stared at her mother as if afraid blinking would make her disappear.

Rose reached up and touched Sophia’s scar.

“Mommy?”

Sophia collapsed to her knees.

“Yes.”

The twins threw themselves into her arms.

Vincent turned away.

Elena saw tears in his eyes.

He let them fall.

No shame.

No attempt to hide them.

Sophia looked up at him while holding their daughters.

Vincent slowly joined them.

For one minute the conspiracy disappeared.

There was only a family that had been broken and had somehow found itself again.

Then every phone in the mansion received the same message.

A video.

Dorian sat behind a desk.

Adrian stood beside him.

Dorian spoke calmly.

“Vincent, by sunrise every major news outlet will receive your shipyard confession.”

Vincent watched.

“You admitted participating in an attempted murder,” Dorian continued. “You will be arrested. Your companies will collapse. Your daughters’ trust will come under emergency management.”

Adrian smiled.

“And this time, little brother, you won’t escape consequences.”

Video ended.

Marcus looked at Vincent.

“We can stop the upload if we find the server.”

Elena asked, “Where?”

Marcus shook his head.

“Could be anywhere.”

Sophia looked at the screen.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

“I know where.”

She pointed at a small reflection in Dorian’s video.

A brass clock.

Sophia recognized it.

“It’s Father’s old office.”

Vincent frowned.

“That building was demolished.”

“The main building was.”

Sophia looked at him.

“The underground archive wasn’t.”

The Starks family once owned a banking office downtown.

Beneath it sat a private records vault.

Vincent had not entered it in fifteen years.

They arrived before dawn.

Police were already moving toward Vincent’s mansion after receiving an anonymous copy of his confession.

Time was disappearing.

Marcus located the underground archive.

Vincent, Sophia, Elena, and a small security team entered.

They found Dorian first.

He was sitting calmly at the central computer.

“Uncle.”

Dorian turned.

For a moment he looked like the same gentle old man who had taught Vincent to drive.

Then he smiled.

“You were always too emotional.”

Vincent looked toward the server.

“Stop the upload.”

“No.”

Sophia stepped forward.

“You tried to kill me.”

Dorian shrugged.

“I tried to protect the family assets.”

“You stole from children.”

“I borrowed against inefficient capital.”

Elena stared at him.

“You killed my brother.”

Dorian’s expression changed.

Recognition.

“Mateo.”

“You remember.”

“He should have minded his business.”

Vincent moved.

Marcus held him back.

Dorian smiled.

“There. That temper. Exactly what we documented.”

Vincent stopped.

Then smiled too.

“You’re right.”

Dorian frowned.

“I have a temper.”

Vincent stepped away.

“But Elena doesn’t.”

Dorian turned.

Elena held Mateo’s microSD card.

“The records are already with federal investigators.”

Dorian’s face collapsed.

It was a bluff.

For now.

But he believed it.

He grabbed the computer keyboard.

Sophia lunged.

Dorian knocked her aside.

Vincent caught him.

Marcus restrained Dorian.

Elena accessed the server.

Upload progress:

92%.

93%.

94%.

“Can you stop it?” Vincent asked.

“I don’t know.”

95%.

Marcus searched for Adrian.

No sign.

96%.

Elena found the transfer process.

Encrypted.

97%.

Sophia saw a cable running into a locked cabinet.

“Power?”

Marcus smashed it open.

Battery backup.

98%.

Elena’s fingers flew across the keyboard.

She found one option.

DELETE MASTER ARCHIVE.

But deleting it would destroy evidence too.

99%.

“Elena,” Vincent said.

She made the choice.

The screen went black.

Upload failed.

Everyone exhaled.

Then slow applause came from the doorway.

Adrian stood there.

A pistol pressed against Rose’s small shoulder.

Lily was crying beside him.

No one had realized the twins were gone.

May you like

And Adrian whispered:

“Now we finish this as a family.”
