Chapter 5 - The Brother Beneath the Grave

Celeste told them everything.

Not immediately.

Vincent nearly tore the nursery door from its hinges before she unlocked it again.

Then she sat on the floor and spoke.

Seven years earlier, Adrian had betrayed the family.

That part was true.

But the betrayal had not been about money.

Adrian discovered their father was using legitimate Starks shipping routes to move weapons without Vincent’s knowledge.

Adrian threatened to expose him.

Their father ordered Adrian’s death.

Dorian warned Adrian.

The bridge accident was staged.

Vincent had believed he was allowing his brother to die.

In reality, Dorian had helped him disappear.

“Then why come back?” Vincent asked.

Celeste looked at him.

“Because Adrian blamed you.”

“For what?”

“For choosing Father.”

Vincent absorbed that silently.

Celeste continued.

Years passed.

Their father died.

Vincent took control and ended the weapons operation without ever knowing Adrian’s original motive.

Adrian watched from a distance.

His resentment grew.

Then Sophia discovered Dorian was stealing from the twins’ trust.

She confronted him.

Dorian panicked.

He contacted Adrian.

Adrian saw an opportunity.

The plan was supposed to frighten Sophia into silence.

Instead, her car was forced off the road.

She survived.

Dorian hid her in the clinic.

“Why?” Elena asked.

“Because if Vincent learned she survived, he’d investigate.”

“Why not kill her?”

Celeste looked sick.

“Adrian wouldn’t allow it.”

Vincent laughed bitterly.

“So my brother kidnapped my wife out of mercy.”

“No. He wanted her to remember enough to hate you.”

Vincent stared.

“He told her you ordered the crash,” Celeste said.

Elena looked at Vincent.

Celeste continued.

“He spent months convincing her you were responsible.”

“That’s why she didn’t come home,” Elena whispered.

Celeste nodded.

“But her memory returned.”

“And she realized it was a lie.”

“Yes.”

“Then why is Adrian holding her now?”

“Because she tried to escape.”

Vincent stood.

“I’m going.”

“No.”

“You think I’m asking permission?”

Celeste moved in front of him.

“He has people at the shipyard.”

“So do I.”

“He said come alone.”

Vincent looked toward Marcus.

Marcus understood.

“We can enter from the river.”

Elena said, “And if he sees anyone?”

Vincent turned.

“He’ll hurt Sophia.”

She nodded.

“That’s what he wants you to believe.”

“What are you suggesting?”

“That this has never been about killing you.”

Vincent stared.

“The teddy bear. The recordings. The drugs. Sophia’s voice. Your brother’s photograph. Every step was designed to make you react.”

She looked toward the hidden camera hole.

“He studies reactions.”

Marcus nodded.

“The notebook.”

Elena continued.

“He wants you angry and irrational. If he only wanted you dead, he could have put a bomb in the bear.”

Silence.

Vincent understood.

“He wants witnesses.”

“To what?”

Elena looked at Celeste.

“Your confession.”

Celeste whispered, “Adrian thinks if Vincent publicly admits he allowed Father to order the bridge hit, the family will remove him.”

Vincent laughed once.

“So that’s the plan.”

Marcus frowned.

“Public confession to murder conspiracy destroys both the legitimate companies and your standing.”

Vincent looked at him.

“Then we give him what he wants.”

Elena’s eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“A confession.”

At midnight, Vincent entered the abandoned shipyard alone.

Or appeared to.

Marcus’s team remained beyond the perimeter.

Elena was supposed to stay at the mansion.

She did not.

She rode hidden in a supply van belonging to Marcus’s men and entered through an old maintenance passage.

The warehouse lights came on.

Adrian stood on a steel platform.

Sophia sat beside him.

Alive.

Vincent stopped.

For a moment the brothers simply looked at each other.

Seven years collapsed between them.

Adrian spoke first.

“You got old.”

Vincent almost smiled.

“So did you.”

Sophia began crying.

“Vincent…”

His eyes moved to her.

Everything in his face changed.

“I’m here.”

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

Adrian tightened his hand on her shoulder.

“Save the reunion.”

Vincent looked at him.

“What do you want?”

“You know.”

“A confession.”

“On camera.”

Adrian pointed toward several lenses.

Vincent looked around.

“You’ve always liked cameras.”

Adrian smiled.

“Your daughters helped me practice.”

Vincent’s expression darkened.

“Never mention them again.”

“There he is.”

Adrian stepped down.

“The great Vincent Starks.”

He approached.

“You let Father kill me.”

“You betrayed us.”

“I exposed him.”

“I didn’t know that.”

“You didn’t ask.”

Vincent said nothing.

Adrian’s anger rose.

“You chose him.”

“Yes.”

That answer stunned everyone.

Vincent continued.

“I chose Father.”

Adrian stared.

“I knew he ordered your car intercepted. I knew what could happen. And I did nothing.”

Sophia looked at him.

Vincent kept going.

“I was twenty-nine and desperate for his approval. I thought loyalty mattered more than truth.”

Adrian’s face trembled.

“You admit it.”

“Yes.”

Cameras recorded everything.

Vincent looked directly into one.

“I failed my brother.”

Adrian smiled slowly.

Then Vincent added:

“But you spent seven years becoming Father.”

The smile disappeared.

“You threatened children. Drugged them. Used Sophia’s voice to terrorize them. Stole from their future. Hurt your own sister.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“I did what I had to do.”

“So did Father.”

Adrian struck him.

Vincent did not retaliate.

Blood touched his lip.

Adrian hit him again.

“You don’t get to compare me to him.”

Vincent looked up.

“You already did.”

Adrian raised his fist.

Sophia shouted, “Adrian!”

He turned.

She kicked the chair backward.

The movement distracted him for one second.

Enough.

Elena emerged from behind stacked crates and cut Sophia’s restraints.

Adrian saw her.

“What the hell—”

Vincent tackled him.

Gunfire erupted outside.

Marcus’s team breached.

Adrian fought violently.

Vincent could have killed him.

Elena saw the opportunity.

So did Adrian.

“Do it,” Adrian hissed.

Vincent’s hand was around his throat.

“Prove me right.”

Vincent stared at his brother.

Then released him.

Marcus cuffed Adrian.

Sophia collapsed into Vincent’s arms.

For several seconds neither spoke.

Then she whispered:

“Are Lily and Rose safe?”

“Yes.”

She sobbed against his chest.

Adrian laughed from the floor.

“You think this is over?”

Marcus dragged him upright.

Adrian looked at Elena.

She did not like his smile.

“Ask your maid why Dorian hired her.”

Vincent turned.

Elena froze.

“What?”

Adrian’s smile widened.

“Go ahead, Elena.”

Her blood went cold.

May you like

Because Dorian had hired her.

And until that moment, she had never wondered why.
