Chapter 9 - The Secret Buried Beneath the Starks Name

For the first time in years, Rory Starks slept without waking up before dawn.

There was no scream.

No sound of footsteps running through the hallway.

No terrified voice calling his name.

No feeling that something terrible was happening while he was powerless to stop it.

The mansion was quiet.

A real quiet.

Not the kind of silence that came before danger.

The kind that came after survival.

But Rory had learned something during the nightmare with the teddy bear.

Peace could be fragile.

And sometimes, the end of one battle only revealed the beginning of another.

Three months had passed since Adrian returned.

Three months since the truth about the surveillance device had been exposed.

Three months since Rory learned that the greatest threat to his family had not come from outside enemies.

It had come from old secrets.

Secrets his father had buried.

Secrets his family had carried for decades.

The world believed the Starks empire was built on power.

Money.

Influence.

Fear.

But Rory now knew the truth.

It was built on choices.

Some honorable.

Some unforgivable.

And some that had consequences waiting years to appear.

Rory stood in his office, looking through the old documents recovered from his father's estate.

The same documents that started everything.

The same documents that brought Adrian back into his life.

Most of them were financial records.

Business agreements.

Old contracts.

Nothing unusual for a family like the Starks.

Until he found the final file.

A black folder hidden beneath the bottom drawer of the cabinet.

A place nobody would look unless they already knew it existed.

Rory opened it carefully.

Inside was one letter.

His father's handwriting.

The moment he saw it, Rory froze.

He had not seen that handwriting in years.

For a few seconds, he considered closing the folder.

Putting it away.

Pretending he had never found it.

That was what his father had done.

He had hidden everything.

But Rory was tired of secrets.

He opened the letter.

My son,

If you are reading this, then the past has finally found you.

Rory continued.

The words were simple.

But they carried weight.

Your entire life, you believed our enemies were the danger.

You were wrong.

The greatest danger to this family has always been the things we refuse to face.

Rory leaned back.

His father had known.

He had known something would eventually happen.

He had known the truth would surface.

The letter continued.

Adrian was never my enemy.

That sentence made Rory stop.

He read it again.

Adrian was never my enemy.

The man you believed betrayed this family was the person who tried to save it.

Rory looked away.

For years, he had carried anger toward his brother.

He had believed Adrian abandoned them.

But the truth had always been more complicated.

The letter continued.

I made mistakes.

I chose power when I should have chosen family.

I thought protecting the Starks name meant protecting our reputation.

I was wrong.

The real legacy of this family is not what we own.

It is who stands beside us when everything falls apart.

Rory closed his eyes.

Because those words felt familiar.

Almost like something his own daughters had taught him.

The world had taught him to protect his empire.

His children had taught him to protect his heart.

A knock interrupted him.

Rory folded the letter.

"Come in."

Adrian entered.

The two brothers looked at each other.

Their relationship was still complicated.

Too many years lost.

Too many things left unsaid.

But it was no longer built on anger.

It was built on honesty.

"You found it."

Rory looked at him.

"You knew about this?"

Adrian nodded.

"I knew there was a letter."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I wanted you to find it when you were ready."

Rory almost smiled.

"That sounds like something our father would say."

Adrian looked down.

"Maybe."

A pause.

"But maybe he learned too late."

The two brothers stood silently.

For years, they had been separated by a lie.

Now they were standing in the same room because someone finally told the truth.

"Who else knows about this?"

Adrian looked serious.

"Someone else was searching for it."

Rory immediately noticed the change in his voice.

"What do you mean?"

"Before the bear incident, someone broke into your father's old storage facility."

Rory frowned.

"Why didn't I hear about this?"

"Because nothing was stolen."

"Nothing?"

Adrian shook his head.

"That's what made it strange."

Rory looked at the letter.

"They weren't looking for money."

"No."

Adrian's expression darkened.

"They were looking for this."

That afternoon, Rory called Veronica into his office.

She had become more than an employee.

More than someone who worked in his home.

She had become family.

"You found something."

It was not a question.

Rory smiled slightly.

"You really do notice everything."

Veronica looked at the documents.

"What happened?"

Rory handed her the letter.

She read silently.

When she finished, she looked concerned.

"Someone still wants these secrets."

Rory nodded.

"Yes."

"And you think the person who planted the device was connected to this?"

"I know they were."

Veronica looked at him.

"How?"

Rory pointed toward the letter.

"Because my father mentioned one thing."

"What?"

"A person inside the family."

Veronica became quiet.

"Another person?"

Rory nodded.

The realization was uncomfortable.

The Starks family had spent years fighting enemies outside.

But the danger had always been closer.

Too close.

That night, Rory sat with Lily and Rose in the garden.

The girls were older now.

Not by much.

But enough.

Enough that they laughed more.

Enough that they stopped checking the corners of their rooms.

Enough that they no longer feared the dark.

Rose held the new teddy bear Rory bought.

The simple one.

The safe one.

"Daddy?"

Rory looked at her.

"Yes?"

"Do you still think toys can be scary?"

He smiled.

"No."

"Why?"

He looked at both girls.

"Because toys aren't scary."

A pause.

"People are."

The twins thought about that.

Then Lily asked:

"Are you scared of people?"

Rory looked across the garden.

At the mansion.

At the life he had built.

"Sometimes."

The answer surprised them.

"You are?"

Rory nodded.

"Everyone is scared sometimes."

"But you're strong."

Rory smiled.

"Being strong doesn't mean you never feel afraid."

He looked at them.

"It means you protect what matters even when you are."

The girls smiled.

And for a moment, Rory forgot about secrets.

Forgot about enemies.

Forgot about the past.

Then his phone rang.

One message.

Unknown number.

Rory looked down.

The words appeared.

You found your father's letter.

His expression changed.

Another message arrived.

But you still don't know the whole truth.

Rory stood slowly.

The peaceful moment disappeared.

A final message appeared.

Ask Adrian what happened the night your father died.

Rory stared at the screen.

Because suddenly, the past was no longer buried.

It was alive.

And someone wanted him to dig deeper.

Someone who knew exactly which wound to open.

Rory looked toward the house.

Toward his daughters.

Then toward Adrian standing near the doorway.

For years, Rory believed the greatest danger was losing his family.

Now he realized something worse.

The truth itself could destroy them.

May you like

And somewhere in the shadows...

Someone was waiting for him to find it.
