Chapter 6 - The Mafia Boss Who Chose His Daughters Over Power

Rory Starks had spent twenty years learning how to recognize enemies.

Enemies came with warnings.

A rival making a sudden move.

A business partner asking too many questions.

A stranger appearing in places they had no reason to be.

Enemies usually announced themselves.

But betrayal was different.

Betrayal wore familiar faces.

It sat at your dinner table.

It knew your children's favorite foods.

It remembered birthdays.

It hugged your daughters and told them everything would be okay.

And that was why betrayal hurt more than any attack Rory had ever survived.

Because the person who hurt you was the person you never thought to protect yourself from.

Rory stood in the hallway outside the dining room after everyone had left.

The house was quiet again.

But it was no longer peaceful.

Every corner felt different.

Every room held a question.

Every person inside the mansion had become a possibility.

He looked through the glass doors toward the backyard.

The place where Lily and Rose used to run every morning.

The place where they believed they were safe.

Rory clenched his jaw.

He had built everything around one purpose.

To give his daughters a life different from his own.

A life away from fear.

Away from violence.

Away from the world that had created him.

But somehow, the danger had found them anyway.

And it had come wearing a smile.

"You're going to confront them."

Veronica's voice came from behind him.

Rory did not turn.

"Who?"

"You know who."

He stayed silent.

Veronica stepped closer.

"You saw something on the footage."

Rory looked at her.

"You notice too much."

She gave a small, tired smile.

"That's why you kept me around."

"I didn't keep you around."

Rory looked toward the nursery.

"You stayed because you cared."

Veronica became quiet.

Because she knew he was right.

For years, people had worked for Rory because of money.

Because of fear.

Because of loyalty built through obligation.

But Veronica was different.

She cared about the girls.

And Rory had finally realized something.

The person who had protected his daughters was not the person with the most power.

It was the person who listened.

"I know who entered the room," Rory said.

Veronica looked at him.

"Who?"

Rory hesitated.

That hesitation surprised her.

Because Rory Starks did not hesitate.

Not when making decisions.

Not when facing danger.

Not when dealing with enemies.

But this was not an enemy.

Not exactly.

"It's someone close."

Veronica understood immediately.

"Someone you love."

Rory looked away.

The answer was enough.

The next morning, Rory made a decision.

Not the kind he usually made.

The old Rory would have reacted immediately.

He would have called his men.

He would have locked the person away.

He would have demanded answers.

But this was not about power.

It was about his daughters.

And for the first time in his life, Rory understood that anger could destroy the very thing he was trying to protect.

So he waited.

He watched.

He listened.

The same way Veronica had.

The same way Lily and Rose had tried to.

The person responsible had been careful.

But careful people still made mistakes.

Everyone did.

The first mistake came during breakfast.

Susan Thompson sat across from the twins.

She smiled warmly.

"Did you sleep better last night?"

The girls looked at her.

Then at Rory.

Rory noticed.

A small movement.

A silent request.

They were asking permission to speak.

"Tell her," Rory said gently.

Susan looked confused.

"Tell me what?"

Lily held Rose's hand.

"We don't want the bear anymore."

Susan's smile disappeared for half a second.

Only half.

But Rory saw it.

"Oh sweetheart," Susan said softly. "You don't mean that."

Rose shook her head.

"We do."

Susan reached toward them.

The twins immediately moved closer to Rory.

That was the moment.

The moment Rory understood.

Children did not fear without a reason.

Adults ignored fear because they wanted comfortable explanations.

But children remembered what adults chose to forget.

Rory placed his hand over Lily's shoulder.

"Susan."

She looked at him.

"Why did you bring them that bear?"

Her expression changed.

"I told you."

"I know what you told me."

His voice became colder.

"But now I want the truth."

Susan stared at him.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then she smiled.

But this time, the smile did not reach her eyes.

"You always were difficult to fool."

Rory felt his entire body go still.

Not because of the words.

Because of the confirmation.

She knew.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

"You were in their room."

Susan looked toward the twins.

"I was trying to protect them."

The answer shocked everyone.

Even Veronica.

Rory stepped forward.

"Protect them?"

"Yes."

"By putting a camera inside their teddy bear?"

Susan looked away.

"Not everything is what you think."

Rory laughed quietly.

A cold sound.

"That's what everyone says when they're caught."

Susan looked at him.

"You think I wanted to hurt them?"

"I think you knew something was wrong and you hid it."

Her silence confirmed it.

Rory's eyes hardened.

"Why?"

Susan looked exhausted suddenly.

Older.

Less controlled.

"Because I was afraid."

The answer surprised him.

"Afraid of what?"

She looked around the mansion.

At the walls.

The expensive furniture.

The family portraits.

"This house."

Rory frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Susan looked at him.

"Your family has secrets, Rory."

He said nothing.

"Secrets that are older than you."

The room became quiet.

"I found something."

"What?"

Susan swallowed.

"Something connected to your past."

Rory stepped closer.

"What did you find?"

Before she could answer, the lights in the mansion suddenly went out.

Darkness filled the room.

The security alarms immediately activated.

The twins screamed.

Rory moved instantly.

He grabbed both girls and pulled them behind him.

Veronica reached for the emergency lights.

Then a sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Someone was inside.

Someone who should not be.

Rory's instincts took over.

He moved toward the door.

But Veronica stopped him.

"Wait."

He looked at her.

She pointed.

On the floor.

A small object had been placed near the entrance.

A phone.

The screen was glowing.

Rory picked it up.

There was one message.

One sentence.

Your daughters were never the target.

Rory stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

You were.

His expression changed.

Because suddenly, the teddy bear made sense.

The screaming.

The surveillance.

The fear.

Someone had not been watching Lily and Rose because they were important.

They had been watching them because they were Rory's weakness.

Someone wanted access to him.

Someone wanted control.

And they had used his daughters to get it.

The emergency lights came back on.

The hallway was empty.

Whoever had been there was gone.

But they had left something behind.

A final message.

Rory looked down.

The phone displayed one last sentence.

The person you trust most knows why.

Rory slowly raised his eyes.

Across the room stood Susan.

But she was not looking at him.

She was looking at the twins.

With fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

And Rory realized something.

Susan was not the mastermind.

She was hiding something.

But she was also afraid of someone else.

Someone closer.

Someone who had been standing beside them all along.

The enemy was still inside the mansion.

And now Rory knew one thing for certain.

May you like

The person who betrayed him was not trying to destroy his family.

They were trying to control it.
