Chapter 8 - A New Beginning After the Nightmare

The name stayed in the room long after Marcus stopped speaking.

Rory Starks.

A man who had built an empire by refusing to show weakness.

A man who had stared down enemies without fear.

A man who had survived betrayals, attacks, and wars.

Yet now, standing in his own office, surrounded by evidence of a secret that had been hidden from him, Rory felt something he rarely allowed himself to feel.

Uncertainty.

"My brother is alive?"

Marcus did not answer immediately.

That silence was enough.

Rory looked at him.

"Marcus."

The security chief lowered his eyes.

"Yes."

The word was quiet.

But it changed everything.

Rory walked slowly toward the desk.

His father's old documents were spread across the surface.

Names.

Transactions.

Hidden agreements.

Pieces of a past that someone had worked very hard to erase.

"You told me he was dead."

Marcus swallowed.

"I believed he was."

"No."

Rory shook his head.

"You knew something."

Marcus looked exhausted.

"I knew there were things your father hid."

Rory's expression hardened.

"My father."

The words carried years of anger.

The Starks family had always been complicated.

Powerful.

Respected.

Dangerous.

But behind the wealth and influence was a history nobody wanted to discuss.

His father had built the foundation of everything Rory inherited.

But he had also left behind enemies.

Secrets.

And unfinished battles.

"What was his name?"

Marcus looked at him.

"You know."

Rory remained silent.

Because he did.

There was only one person.

One name that had disappeared from every family record.

One person everyone had been forbidden to mention.

"Adrian."

The name felt unfamiliar and familiar at the same time.

Like a forgotten memory returning.

Rory remembered being young.

A teenage boy watching his older brother leave the house after a fight with their father.

The shouting.

The anger.

The slammed door.

After that night, Adrian vanished.

His father told everyone he was gone.

That he had chosen another life.

That he was no longer part of the family.

Rory believed him.

Until now.

"He has been alive this entire time?"

Marcus nodded.

"Yes."

"And you knew?"

"I suspected."

Rory turned sharply.

"That is not an answer."

Marcus looked directly at him.

"Because I wasn't sure."

The room became silent.

Then Marcus continued.

"Your father left something behind."

Rory frowned.

"What?"

"A record."

"Of what?"

Marcus looked toward the documents.

"Everything."

The next hour changed everything.

Marcus finally told the truth.

Years earlier, before Rory's father died, he discovered that someone inside the Starks family was trying to take control of the empire.

Not through business.

Not through violence.

Through secrets.

Blackmail.

Information.

The most powerful weapon in their world was not a gun.

It was knowledge.

And Adrian had learned how to use it.

"He believed your father stole his future," Marcus explained.

Rory looked away.

"Maybe he did."

Marcus was surprised.

"You believe him?"

"No."

Rory looked back.

"But I know my father wasn't innocent."

That was the difference.

Rory had spent years pretending the past did not matter.

But now the past had entered his children's bedroom.

It had hidden inside a teddy bear.

It had made his daughters afraid to sleep.

He could not ignore it anymore.

"What does Adrian want?"

Marcus hesitated.

"The same thing he wanted years ago."

"What?"

"Control."

Rory laughed quietly.

"Then why target my daughters?"

Marcus looked at him.

"Because Adrian knows you."

A pause.

"He knows you can survive losing money."

Another pause.

"You can survive losing power."

Marcus looked toward the nursery.

"But you cannot survive losing them."

Rory said nothing.

Because it was true.

That night, Rory did something unexpected.

He went upstairs.

Not to investigate.

Not to question anyone.

Not to plan revenge.

He went to his daughters.

Lily and Rose were awake.

Sitting together in bed.

The teddy bear was gone.

For the first time in weeks, there was nothing between them.

No hidden device.

No secret.

No fear.

When Rory entered, Lily smiled.

"Daddy."

He sat beside them.

"How are you feeling?"

Rose looked at him.

"Better."

Rory touched her hand.

"Why?"

The little girl thought for a moment.

"Because you believe us now."

The answer hurt.

Not because she meant to hurt him.

Because she was right.

Rory looked down.

"I'm sorry."

The twins became quiet.

"I should have listened sooner."

Lily tilted her head.

"You didn't know."

Rory looked at her.

Children were strange.

They could forgive things adults carried forever.

"You were scared," he said.

The twins nodded.

"But you told me."

Rose smiled slightly.

"And you fixed it."

Rory felt something break inside him.

Not pain.

Something else.

Relief.

For the first time in months, he felt like he was being a father again.

Not a businessman.

Not a mafia boss.

A father.

The next morning, Rory made his move.

But not the move everyone expected.

His men expected orders.

They expected a hunt.

They expected revenge.

Instead, Rory gave instructions that surprised everyone.

"Protect the family."

His advisor looked confused.

"Sir?"

"Not attack."

Rory looked at him.

"Protect."

The difference mattered.

For years, Rory had believed power came from making people fear him.

But his daughters had taught him something.

Power was not about controlling everyone around you.

It was about protecting the people who trusted you.

By afternoon, they found Adrian.

Not through violence.

Not through threats.

Through patience.

He had been hiding in a small coastal town several hours away.

Living under another name.

Watching.

Waiting.

When Rory arrived, he expected anger.

He expected confrontation.

Instead, he found his older brother sitting alone near the ocean.

Older.

Tired.

Different from the man in his memories.

Adrian looked up.

"I wondered when you would come."

Rory stood several feet away.

"You put a device in my daughter's teddy bear."

Adrian's face changed.

"No."

The answer was immediate.

Real.

Rory noticed.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"I expect you to listen."

Rory almost walked away.

Almost.

But then Adrian spoke.

"The bear was never supposed to be a threat."

Rory stopped.

"What?"

Adrian looked toward the ocean.

"I planted the device."

The admission was unexpected.

Rory's expression darkened.

"But I never wanted your daughters hurt."

"Then why?"

"Because I needed to know who was watching your family."

Rory stared at him.

"What are you talking about?"

Adrian looked at him.

"Someone else was already inside."

A cold feeling moved through Rory.

"The device wasn't mine."

Adrian continued.

"I found out someone had access to your house."

Rory remembered.

The deleted footage.

The hidden recordings.

Marcus.

Susan.

Everything.

Adrian lowered his voice.

"I used the bear to expose them."

Rory shook his head.

"You terrified my daughters."

"I know."

Adrian looked down.

"And I regret that."

The honesty surprised Rory.

Because it was not the answer he expected.

"I watched the recordings."

Rory froze.

"What?"

"I saw Lily and Rose crying."

Adrian's voice changed.

"I saw what happened."

A pause.

"And I realized I had become exactly like the people I hated."

The ocean waves moved behind him.

"I used innocent people to win a fight."

Rory remained silent.

For the first time, he saw something other than an enemy.

He saw someone broken.

Someone who had spent years fighting a battle that had destroyed him.

"You could have told me."

Adrian nodded.

"I should have."

"Why didn't you?"

Adrian looked away.

"Because I thought you were just like our father."

That sentence hurt more than Rory expected.

Because somewhere deep inside...

He had feared the same thing.

Weeks later, the Starks mansion was different.

The security systems were rebuilt.

The old secrets were exposed.

The people responsible were removed.

But the biggest change was not the walls.

It was the family inside them.

Lily and Rose slept peacefully again.

No screaming.

No fear.

No nightmares.

The teddy bear was gone.

But another toy replaced it.

One Rory bought himself.

A simple stuffed animal.

Nothing expensive.

Nothing special.

Just something chosen by a father.

One evening, Rory sat beside his daughters as they prepared for bed.

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

"Are you still the scary man everyone talks about?"

Rory smiled slightly.

"Who told you that?"

Rose shrugged.

"People."

Rory looked at them.

"And what do you think?"

The twins thought carefully.

Then Lily smiled.

"You're only scary when someone hurts people you love."

Rory laughed quietly.

Maybe that was true.

Maybe he would always be dangerous.

Maybe the world would always know his name.

But now he understood something.

The greatest victory was not defeating enemies.

It was creating a place where his daughters never had to be afraid again.

May you like

And for the first time in a long time...

Rory Starks finally felt like he was home.
