Chapter 9 - The Truth Damian Never Knew

Marcus Bell stood outside.
His hands were empty.
His face looked exhausted.
Damian opened the door.
"Explain."
Marcus entered.
"I made the call."
Khloe stared at him.
"Why?"
"Because Rainer wasn't working alone."
"We know."
"No."
Marcus shook his head.
"You don't."
He placed a folder on Dominic's desk.
"My father discovered the second network shortly before he died."
"Whose network?"
Marcus looked toward Leo.
"Victor Mercer's."
Leo stiffened.
"My father was dead."
"His network wasn't."
Victor had created a contingency group designed to preserve evidence if Dominic failed.
After Victor died, Samuel Bell inherited access.
Then Marcus.
"So you've been running it?" Damian asked.
"Monitoring it."
"Without telling me."
"Dominic specifically ordered that you not know unless Rainer was exposed."
Damian laughed once without humor.
"My father had an extraordinary commitment to secrets."
Marcus nodded.
"And look what it cost everyone."
The second protocol wasn't an attack.
It was a release.
If Rainer was captured, Victor's network would publish the remaining evidence unless manually stopped.
"Why stop it?" Khloe asked.
"Because one file is wrong."
Marcus opened the folder.
It implicated Damian in transactions made when he was sixteen.
Impossible.
Rainer had planted false evidence years earlier, anticipating exactly this moment.
If released, it could destroy the credibility of the legitimate case.
"We have to remove it before midnight."
They had ninety minutes.
The server was located beneath the old Russo records facility.
They went together.
No more secret teams.
No more hidden agendas.
Authorities accompanied them.
Thomas joined.
So did Gabriel.
Evelyn remained behind to coordinate attorneys.
At the server room, Khloe accessed Victor's system.
Password required.
Leo tried dates.
Names.
Nothing.
Then he remembered something his father used to say.
"Truth doesn't need permission."
He typed it.
Access granted.
Files appeared.
Khloe located the false records.
But deleting them would alter evidence.
Instead, she attached verification documents proving Damian had been a minor and nowhere near the transactions.
"Don't erase lies," she said. "Expose them."
Damian watched her.
His father's words returned.
Trust his daughter.
Dominic had been right.
Khloe completed the correction.
The system released the archive.
This time, the truth went out intact.
No innocent employee records.
No false evidence.
No hidden manipulation.
Just documents.
Dates.
Transactions.
Recordings.
The kind of truth that didn't need a dramatic speech.
By morning, investigators had everything.
Rainer faced prosecution based on the evidence.
Other participants were identified.
Some were dead.
Some cooperated.
The old network finally collapsed under its own records.
Gabriel testified.
Thomas testified.
Marcus testified.
Evelyn did too.
Leo learned the truth about Victor.
His father hadn't betrayed Dominic.
He had died trying to protect him.
That knowledge didn't return the years Leo had lost.
But it returned something else.
His father's name.
Khloe's relationship with Thomas was harder.
Three days after the server release, he asked to meet her.
She chose a public park.
Damian drove her there but stayed in the car.
Thomas sat on a bench.
Khloe joined him.
"I'm not ready to forgive you," she said.
"I know."
"I don't know if I ever will."
"I know."
"You don't get to disappear again."
Thomas looked at her.
"What?"
"If we're going to try... you stay."
His eyes filled.
"Okay."
"You answer questions."
"Okay."
"You don't decide what truth I can handle."
"I promise."
Khloe nodded.
"Then maybe we start there."
Thomas smiled through tears.
"Maybe."
When she returned to the car, Damian didn't ask what happened.
He simply drove.
That mattered.
A week later, Khloe returned to Russo Holdings.
Her desk had been restored.
Same monitor.
Same legal pad.
Same fountain pen.
A new vase stood beside it.
White lilies.
Khloe stopped.
Damian stood inside his office pretending to read a report.
She entered without knocking.
"You have a problem."
He looked up.
"Several."
"You keep anonymously sending flowers."
"I signed these."
She checked the card.
It read:
KHLOE.
That was all.
She stared at him.
"This barely counts."
"Progress."
She laughed.
Then closed the office door.
Damian's humor faded.
"Are you sure you're ready to be back?"
"No."
"Then why are you here?"
"Because I wanted to talk to you."
He stood.
"About?"
"Us."
Damian became completely still.
Khloe folded her arms.
"You nearly told me something before Leo interrupted."
"I've nearly told you several things over three years."
"That's the problem."
She stepped closer.
"No more silence."
He looked at her.
"No more silence."
"Why did you send the lilies?"
Damian took a breath.
"Because you mentioned your grandmother."
"That's why you chose lilies."
"Yes."
"Not why you sent flowers."
Damian looked at the woman who had become the first person he searched for every morning without admitting it.
The woman whose empty desk had frightened him more than any threat he'd ever received.
The woman he'd held on a basement floor while believing, for one terrible moment, that he'd arrived too late.
"Because I'm in love with you."
Khloe didn't move.
Damian continued before courage failed him.
"I've been in love with you for longer than I should admit."
"How long?"
"At least two years."
Her mouth fell open.
"Two years?"
"Possibly longer."
"And your plan was what? Anonymous flowers until retirement?"
"It wasn't a particularly developed plan."
She laughed.
Then tears appeared.
Damian stepped toward her.
"Khloe?"
"I spent three years thinking you barely noticed me."
"I noticed everything."
"The coffee?"
"Everything."
"The days I changed my hair?"
"Yes."
"The green dress at the charity dinner?"
Damian's expression answered before he did.
Khloe smiled.
"Wow."
"What?"
"You really did notice."
"I told you."
She moved closer.
Then stopped.
"Damian, I can't become another thing you protect by hiding the truth."
"You won't."
"I won't be controlled."
"I know."
"I won't be ordered around."
He raised an eyebrow.
"That one may require negotiation."
She smiled.
"Fair."
He reached for her hand.
She let him.
Then his phone vibrated.
Both looked down.
Damian sighed.
"If that's another nineteen-year conspiracy, I'm resigning."
Khloe laughed.
He checked the message.
His expression changed.
"What?"
The message contained a photograph.
An old photograph.
Dominic Russo.
Victor Mercer.
Thomas Hayes.
Gabriel Vale.
All four men together.
On the back, photographed clearly, someone had written:
FOR OUR CHILDREN, IF WE FAIL.
Below it were four names.
Damian.
Leo.
Khloe.
And one name neither Damian nor Khloe recognized.
SARAH.
Khloe's smile vanished.
"Who's Sarah?"
Damian enlarged the image.
Under Sarah's name was an address.
A house less than twenty miles away.
And beside it, one final note:
SHE KNOWS WHERE DOMINIC'S ORIGINAL RECORDING IS.
Khloe looked at Damian.
"I thought we had the original."
"So did I."
They drove to the address.
A small house.
Quiet street.
Damian knocked.
No answer.
Khloe tried again.
Footsteps approached.
The lock turned.
The door opened.
A woman in her thirties stared at Damian.
Then at Khloe.
Her face went white.
She whispered:
"You finally found me."
May you like
And behind her, on a table, sat a sealed recording marked with three words:
DOMINIC'S FINAL TRUTH...
