Chapter 7 - The Man Behind the Name

"Dad!"
Khloe ran.
Damian followed.
They reached the corridor.
Thomas was gone.
A service door stood open.
His phone lay on the floor.
No blood.
No struggle.
Damian picked it up.
One message glowed on-screen.
FINISH WHAT YOU STARTED.
Khloe looked at the photograph again.
Thomas and Rainer.
Three days earlier.
"My father knew where Rainer was."
Damian nodded.
"He hid it."
"Again."
Her voice carried exhaustion more than anger.
Every answer about Thomas seemed to reveal another lie.
Leo checked the service exit.
"Vehicle left thirty seconds ago."
"Can you trace it?"
"Already trying."
Khloe sat down.
Damian crouched beside her.
She looked at him.
"Why does everybody think protecting someone means lying to them?"
Damian almost answered.
Then realized he had done exactly that.
For three years, he'd hidden his feelings because he told himself it protected their working relationship.
Perhaps silence was simply cowardice dressed as sacrifice.
"I don't know."
Khloe looked surprised.
"You always have an answer."
"Not today."
Leo found Thomas's vehicle twenty minutes later.
Abandoned.
Inside was a notebook.
Thomas had filled it with observations about Rainer.
Addresses.
Meetings.
Names.
One name appeared repeatedly.
GABRIEL.
The final entry read:
GABRIEL ISN'T HUNTING KHLOE.
HE'S PROTECTING HER FROM RAINER.
Khloe stared.
"Then why was Gabriel at my apartment?"
Damian thought back.
The apartment showed signs of a struggle.
But nothing had been stolen.
Maybe Gabriel hadn't arrived to take her.
Maybe someone else had.
"Two groups," Damian said.
Leo nodded slowly.
"Rainer's people and Gabriel."
Khloe remembered the morning.
A knock.
Gabriel entering.
His urgent warning.
Then the second man behind him.
She had assumed they were together.
Maybe they weren't.
She closed her eyes.
"He told me to run."
Damian leaned forward.
"What?"
"Gabriel."
Memories returned.
Gabriel had entered her apartment and said:
"They know what you found. You have to leave."
Then someone struck him from behind.
Khloe remembered falling.
When she woke, she was in the basement.
"Gabriel tried to help me."
Damian stood.
"Then Rainer staged everything to make Gabriel look responsible."
"Broken crown included."
Leo examined the brass medallion.
"Frame the Vale family."
The entire conspiracy shifted.
Adrian Vale might not have destroyed Dominic.
Gabriel might not have ordered Victor's death.
The symbol wasn't a confession.
It was camouflage.
Khloe searched Thomas's notebook.
One address had been circled.
A church in Brooklyn.
They went there.
Gabriel waited inside.
Alone.
Older now.
Gray at his temples.
He raised his hands when Damian entered.
"I don't want trouble."
Damian stopped ten feet away.
"You broke into Khloe's apartment."
"To warn her."
"You were at the basement."
"Trying to reach her."
"Prove it."
Gabriel removed a small recorder.
"Your father taught me to keep evidence."
He played it.
Rainer's voice.
"Bring Hayes's daughter to the old facility."
Another man asked, "And Gabriel?"
"Leave enough evidence to blame him."
Khloe stared.
Gabriel looked at her.
"I'm sorry I didn't reach you sooner."
"Why help me?"
"Because your father once saved my life."
Khloe shook her head.
"My father seems to have lived several lives I knew nothing about."
Gabriel's expression softened.
"He sacrificed the one he wanted."
"Don't defend him."
"I'm not."
Gabriel looked toward Damian.
"Rainer has Thomas."
"Where?"
"Russo Tower."
Damian frowned.
"Again?"
"He doesn't want a warehouse anymore. He wants control."
"Of what?"
"Your company."
Damian almost laughed.
"He's doing all this for a company?"
"No."
Gabriel shook his head.
"For what your company owns."
Russo Holdings had quietly acquired dozens of properties over the decades.
One contained a data archive.
Dominic had hidden copies of every Crown Meridian transaction there.
Rainer had searched for it for nineteen years.
Khloe had unknowingly found the access path.
"Where?"
Gabriel looked at her.
"Your computer."
Khloe froze.
"What?"
"The archive key is embedded in an old accounting file you downloaded."
Damian understood why they had taken her laptop but then left it behind.
"They copied it."
Gabriel nodded.
"But it's encrypted."
"Password?"
"Dominic designed it."
Damian thought.
His father.
Trust his daughter.
Thomas Hayes's daughter.
He looked at Khloe.
"The password is connected to you."
"How could it be? I was twelve."
Gabriel answered.
"Because Dominic promised Thomas something."
"What?"
"That if the truth ever surfaced, Khloe would be the one to decide what happened to it."
Khloe stared.
Her father and Dominic had built a final safeguard around a child.
Not because she understood it then.
Because they hoped she would live long enough to choose.
Gabriel gave them an access card.
"Rainer is waiting."
Damian looked at him.
"You're coming."
Gabriel shook his head.
"He'll kill Thomas if he sees me."
"No more disappearing."
Gabriel looked toward Khloe.
She said quietly, "He's right."
Gabriel nodded.
They returned to Russo Tower after coordinating with authorities.
This time, they knew the enemy.
Rainer had locked down the upper floors using old security overrides.
Leo bypassed them.
Floor thirty.
Thirty-one.
Thirty-two.
The elevator opened.
Khloe's desk waited.
Someone sat in her chair.
Edward Rainer.
Silver-haired.
Perfectly calm.
Thomas stood behind him.
Alive.
Rainer smiled at Damian.
"You look like Dominic."
Damian stepped out.
"You don't."
Rainer laughed.
"Still arrogant."
"Still alive."
"For now."
Khloe walked beside Damian.
Rainer looked at her.
"Miss Hayes. You caused extraordinary inconvenience."
She met his eyes.
"You're welcome."
Rainer's smile vanished.
"Password."
"No."
He gestured toward Thomas.
"You sure?"
Khloe looked at her father.
Thomas shook his head.
"Don't."
Rainer sighed.
"Families. Always making simple things complicated."
Damian moved half a step forward.
"Let him go."
"Give me the archive."
"You'll never leave this building with it."
"I don't need to."
Rainer turned a laptop.
A transfer was already prepared.
Khloe saw the destination.
If unlocked, the archive would upload everywhere.
Then erase locally.
"Password."
Khloe stared at the screen.
A hint appeared.
THE FLOWER SHE REMEMBERED.
Damian's eyes widened.
White lilies.
Khloe's grandmother.
Thomas whispered, "Dominic remembered."
Khloe typed:
LILY.
Rejected.
GRANDMOTHER.
Rejected.
Then she remembered something her father used to call the garden.
Hope.
She typed:
SEEDSOFHOPE.
The archive unlocked.
Rainer smiled.
"Thank you."
But Khloe didn't move.
Neither did Damian.
Rainer looked at the screen.
The archive opened automatically.
A video appeared.
Dominic Russo sat behind his desk nineteen years earlier.
He looked directly into the camera.
"If Edward Rainer is watching this, then you finally found it."
Rainer's face changed.
Dominic continued:
"And you just authenticated your identity."
A progress bar appeared.
EVIDENCE TRANSMITTED.
Rainer lunged for the computer.
Too late.
Leo smiled from the doorway.
"Every file went to the investigators downstairs."
Rainer stared at Damian.
"You think this ends it?"
Damian said nothing.
Rainer smiled slowly.
"Ask Thomas who gave me Dominic's schedule."
Khloe turned toward her father.
Thomas went pale.
Rainer laughed.
"Go ahead, Thomas."
Damian looked at him.
"Tell her."
Thomas's eyes filled with shame.
"I did."
Khloe stopped breathing.
Her father whispered:
May you like
"I was the reason Dominic was alone that night."
And before anyone could speak, every light in Russo Tower went out...
