Chapter 3 - The Symbol in Brass

Thomas Hayes looked older than his photographs.

But he was alive.

Khloe stared at him from Damian's arms.

"Dad?"

Thomas stopped.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Khloe tried to stand.

Damian helped her.

Thomas moved forward.

Khloe recoiled.

That stopped him instantly.

"You've been alive?"

Her voice cracked.

"Khloe—"

"Nineteen years?"

"I can explain."

"You let me bury an empty coffin."

Thomas closed his eyes.

"I know."

"No. You don't know."

Damian remained beside her.

Khloe had spent most of her adult life looking for answers about this man.

Now he stood ten feet away.

And she looked more wounded by his existence than by his disappearance.

Thomas reached into his coat.

Leo moved instinctively.

Thomas froze.

"Easy."

He slowly produced an envelope.

"I didn't take Khloe."

Damian's voice was quiet.

"Then why are you here?"

"Because I knew where they would bring her."

"Who?"

Thomas looked at Leo.

"Not in front of him."

Leo stiffened.

Damian stepped forward.

"Anything you say to me, you say in front of Leo."

"That's exactly what your father said about Victor Mercer."

The room changed.

Leo's face hardened.

"Watch yourself."

Thomas held up both hands.

"I'm not accusing you."

"You just accused my father."

"I'm telling you what happened."

Damian's patience thinned.

"Start talking."

Thomas explained.

Nineteen years earlier, he had discovered millions moving through Crown Meridian.

Adrian Vale appeared responsible.

But the transfers were too sophisticated for one man.

Thomas took the evidence to Dominic Russo.

Dominic agreed to help.

They planned to meet privately.

Someone betrayed them.

Before the meeting, Thomas's car exploded in a parking structure.

He survived because he'd stepped away moments earlier.

Everyone assumed he died.

Thomas let them.

"Why?"

Khloe demanded.

"Because the people looking for me came to our house that night."

Her anger vanished.

Thomas's voice shook.

"You were twelve."

Khloe stared at him.

"I watched from across the street. Two men went inside while you and your mother slept."

"What happened?"

"Someone else stopped them."

"Who?"

"Dominic Russo."

Damian looked up sharply.

Thomas nodded.

"Your father saved my family."

Damian had never known.

"He told me disappearing was the only way to keep them safe."

Khloe shook her head.

"You could have contacted us."

"I wanted to every day."

"But you didn't."

"No."

"You let Mom die thinking you were dead."

Thomas couldn't answer that.

Khloe stepped away.

Damian saw the pain in her face.

He wanted to touch her shoulder.

He didn't.

Not yet.

Thomas held out the envelope.

"This is why they took you."

Khloe didn't take it.

Damian did.

Inside was a ledger page.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

One entry was circled.

DOMINIC RUSSO — MARCH 14.

Beside it:

REMOVAL AUTHORIZED.

Damian read the words without blinking.

"Who authorized it?"

"The original ledger had a signature."

"Had?"

"Someone tore out the page."

"Who?"

Thomas looked toward the brass medallion in Damian's hand.

"The person who owns that."

Damian opened his fingers.

"The broken crown belonged to Vale."

"No."

Thomas shook his head.

"That's what we were supposed to believe."

The revelation landed quietly.

Thomas continued.

"Vale didn't create the symbol. His silent partner did."

Leo's face changed.

"My father."

Thomas looked at him.

"Victor Mercer."

Leo stepped forward.

"You said you weren't accusing him."

"I'm not."

"Then what are you saying?"

"Victor discovered the same thing I did."

Thomas swallowed.

"He tried to expose it."

Leo stared.

"Then why was he listed as a partner?"

"Because somebody forged his ownership documents after his death."

Damian's thoughts accelerated.

Two fathers.

Both dead.

One vanished witness.

One missing ledger page.

Someone had spent nineteen years burying the same secret.

"Who benefited?" Damian asked.

Thomas looked at him.

"That's the question Khloe finally answered."

Everyone turned toward her.

Khloe wiped tears from her face.

"Six weeks ago, I found an account."

She described an offshore trust receiving percentages from every Crown Meridian transaction.

The trust still existed.

It had recently begun moving money again.

"Who controls it?" Damian asked.

"I couldn't see the beneficiary."

"But you found something."

She nodded.

"A recovery email."

Damian waited.

"It belonged to someone at Russo Holdings."

Silence.

"Who?"

Before Khloe could answer, the lights died.

Darkness.

Leo cursed.

Damian immediately pulled Khloe toward the wall.

Emergency lights flashed red.

Thomas whispered, "They found us."

A metallic crash echoed upstairs.

Damian heard footsteps.

Several.

Leo moved toward the door.

"We need another exit."

Thomas pointed toward the hidden passage.

"That tunnel leads to the alley."

They moved.

Damian kept Khloe close.

The passage was narrow.

Thomas led.

Leo followed behind Damian.

Halfway through, Khloe stumbled.

Damian caught her.

"I can walk."

"I know."

"Then stop carrying half my weight."

"No."

Under any other circumstances she might have argued.

Instead, she leaned against him.

At the end of the tunnel, Thomas opened a service hatch.

Cold daylight appeared.

They emerged behind the warehouse.

A black sedan waited.

Thomas stopped.

"I didn't arrange that."

The doors opened.

Damian's men raised their hands defensively.

A woman stepped out.

Mid-sixties.

Gray hair.

Black coat.

Damian recognized her.

"Evelyn?"

Evelyn Russo.

His father's younger sister.

His aunt.

The woman who had helped raise him after Dominic died.

She looked at Damian.

Then at Thomas.

"You shouldn't be here."

Damian's voice became cold.

"Neither should he."

Evelyn looked at Khloe.

"Are you hurt?"

Khloe stared at her.

"You knew my father was alive."

Evelyn said nothing.

That was answer enough.

Damian stepped between them.

"How long?"

"Damian—"

"How long?"

"Nineteen years."

His jaw tightened.

"You lied to me for nineteen years."

"I protected you."

"From what?"

"From becoming your father."

Damian froze.

Evelyn looked toward the warehouse.

"We can't discuss this here."

"You'll discuss it wherever I tell you."

"Then tell me somewhere that doesn't have men approaching with cameras."

Damian glanced toward the street.

She was right.

They left.

At a private medical clinic, Khloe was examined.

No serious injuries.

Dehydration.

A concussion.

Cuts and bruising.

She needed rest.

She refused.

"I'm not going home."

Damian stood beside the examination room door.

"You're going somewhere safe."

"My apartment was supposed to be safe."

"Then you're staying with me."

Khloe looked at him.

Neither spoke for several seconds.

"Damian..."

"This isn't a negotiation."

"Everything with you is a negotiation."

"Not this."

She almost smiled.

"Fine."

Thomas waited outside.

Khloe walked past him.

He didn't try to stop her.

At Damian's Tribeca penthouse, Leo began checking the offshore account.

Evelyn sat across from Damian.

Thomas stood by the window.

Khloe sat beside Damian, wrapped in a blanket.

"Start," Damian said.

Evelyn sighed.

"Your father knew someone inside Russo Holdings was helping Vale."

"Who?"

"He never proved it."

"But you knew Thomas survived."

"Dominic arranged it."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because after Dominic died, I received a message."

She reached into her handbag.

A yellowed piece of paper.

Damian unfolded it.

KEEP THE BOY OUT OF IT OR HE JOINS HIS FATHER.

Damian read it twice.

Evelyn continued.

"I chose you."

"You chose silence."

"Yes."

Damian looked at her.

"And nineteen years later, Khloe paid for it."

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

"Yes."

Leo interrupted from across the room.

"I found the offshore beneficiary."

Everyone turned.

His laptop displayed a corporate registration.

Damian walked over.

"Name?"

Leo looked confused.

"That's impossible."

"Leo."

"The beneficiary isn't a person."

He turned the screen.

"It's a company."

Damian read the name.

Russo Strategic Security.

His own internal security division.

Damian stared.

Only three executives had authority over that division.

Himself.

Leo.

And—

His phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

YOU'RE LOOKING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION.

Another message arrived.

ASK EVELYN WHO WAS WITH YOUR FATHER WHEN HE DIED.

Damian slowly looked at his aunt.

Evelyn's face changed.

"What?" Khloe asked.

Damian showed her the message.

Evelyn stood.

Her chair scraped backward.

Damian's voice was barely above a whisper.

"Who was with him?"

Evelyn stared at the phone.

Then at Damian.

"I never wanted you to know."

"Know what?"

She opened her mouth.

Before she could answer, the penthouse elevator chimed.

Someone had reached Damian's private floor without authorization.

The doors slowly opened.

May you like

A man stepped out carrying Dominic Russo's missing ledger.

And Khloe whispered his name...
