Chapter 2 - The File With My Name On It

The woman stepped out of the elevator holding a black folder.
My name was written across the front.
Not printed.
Handwritten.
I stared at it from across the lobby.
My first thought was that it had to be a mistake.
My second thought was that Daniel knew exactly what it was.
Because the moment he saw the folder, the color drained from his face.
"Hannah," he said quietly.
I looked at him.
"Why is my name on that?"
Nobody answered.
That was the part that scared me most.
Not the executives standing around us.
Not the employees pretending they weren't listening.
Not even the woman holding the folder.
It was the silence.
The kind of silence people created when they already knew something you didn't.
The woman looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
She was probably in her late forties, wearing a perfectly fitted gray suit and carrying herself like someone who had spent years walking into rooms where everyone stopped talking.
"Mr. Reed," she said.
Daniel didn't respond.
He just stared at the folder.
"Not here," he finally said.
Her expression didn't change.
"Actually, I think here is exactly where this needs to happen."
My stomach tightened.
Mr. Reed.
I had never heard his last name.
At the diner, he was just Daniel.
The lonely man with untouched food.
The stranger who paid before leaving.
The person who warned me to be careful.
Now he was standing in the middle of my workplace while everyone looked at him like he owned the building.
I glanced around.
My coworkers quickly looked away.
That made everything worse.
Because people only looked away when they knew they had been caught watching.
"Can someone explain what is happening?" I asked.
My voice sounded calmer than I felt.
Daniel looked at me.
And for a second, I saw the same man from the diner.
Not the powerful executive.
Not the person everyone feared.
Just the lonely man sitting across from my children.
"Hannah," he said, lowering his voice, "I never expected to see you here."
I almost laughed.
"That is strange because this is where I work."
"No."
His eyes moved around the lobby.
Then back to me.
"I mean I never expected you to be here when this happened."
"When what happened?"
The woman opened the folder.
I saw several pages inside.
Documents.
Photos.
Reports.
And then I saw something that made my heart stop.
A picture of me.
Not from work.
Not from the diner.
From years ago.
I stepped closer.
"Where did you get that?"
The woman closed the folder halfway.
"My name is Victoria Lane."
She extended her hand.
I didn't take it.
"Should I know you?"
"No."
She lowered her hand.
"But you should know what is inside this file."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Victoria."
She looked at him.
"Don't do this."
His voice became sharper.
"You don't know her."
Victoria's expression softened slightly.
"Actually, Daniel, I know exactly who she is."
Those words hit harder than they should have.
Because I suddenly felt like the only person in the room who didn't belong.
I looked at Daniel.
"How do you know me?"
He didn't answer immediately.
And that hesitation hurt more than anything.
Because it meant there was an answer.
A real one.
A complicated one.
"I saw your name before," he said.
"Where?"
He looked away.
"Hannah..."
"No."
I shook my head.
"You don't get to say my name like you know me."
The lobby became completely quiet.
I didn't care anymore.
Something about that moment made me forget everyone was watching.
"You sat at my table."
My voice became lower.
"My children talked to you. I invited you into my life because I thought you were just someone having a bad night."
Daniel looked down.
"I was."
"Then why does a stranger have a file about me?"
He had no answer.
That was the answer.
Victoria opened the folder again.
"I think you deserve to know why Daniel was sitting alone in that diner."
Daniel immediately looked at her.
"Stop."
She ignored him.
"He wasn't there by accident."
My heart sank.
"What does that mean?"
Victoria looked directly at me.
"It means he had been looking for you."
The words felt unreal.
I stepped back.
"No."
Daniel moved toward me.
"Hannah, listen."
I raised my hand.
"How long?"
He stopped.
"What?"
"How long have you known my name?"
Silence.
Then he answered.
"Three months."
I felt my chest tighten.
Three months.
Three months before he sat at that diner.
Three months before he smiled at my children.
Three months before he accepted my invitation.
"You knew who I was."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Daniel looked at the floor.
And for the first time since I met him, he looked afraid.
Not nervous.
Not uncomfortable.
Afraid.
"Because someone wanted to find you before I did."
I froze.
"What does that mean?"
Victoria closed the folder.
"It means there is someone who has been searching for you for a very long time."
I looked between them.
"What are you talking about?"
Nobody answered.
My mind raced through every possibility.
An old debt.
A mistake.
Someone from my past.
But there was nothing.
I had spent years trying to build a quiet life.
Working.
Raising my children.
Paying bills.
Trying to make sure Lily and Noah never felt the struggles I carried.
I wasn't important.
I wasn't wealthy.
I wasn't connected to powerful people.
So why was a man like Daniel Reed looking for me?
Victoria seemed to read my thoughts.
"You keep asking yourself why someone would care about you."
I didn't respond.
Because she was right.
"You think you're ordinary."
She looked at Daniel.
"That's why he chose you."
I turned to Daniel.
"Chose me?"
The word sounded wrong.
Like I was part of a plan.
Like I was a decision someone made without asking me.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Hannah, please."
"No."
I shook my head.
"I need you to tell me the truth."
His jaw tightened.
"The truth is that I wasn't supposed to meet you that night."
"Then why did you?"
He looked at me.
And his answer surprised me.
"Because I was tired."
"Tired of what?"
He swallowed.
"Tired of pretending I didn't care."
I didn't understand.
But before I could ask, my phone buzzed again.
Unknown number.
Another message.
I opened it.
This time there was a picture.
My hands went cold.
It was taken outside my apartment building.
Yesterday.
Lily and Noah walking inside with me.
Someone had been watching us.
Under the picture were six words.
"Now you know why he came."
I looked up.
Daniel was staring at my phone.
And he looked terrified.
Not because someone was watching me.
Because he recognized the person who sent it.
"Who is it?" I whispered.
He didn't answer.
He just said one name.
A name I had never heard before.
A name that changed everything.
"Charles."
The second Daniel said it, Victoria dropped the folder.
The papers scattered across the marble floor.
One page landed face up.
I saw a photograph attached to it.
A photograph of a young woman.
A woman who looked exactly like me.
And at the bottom of the page was a date.
The same day I was born.
Daniel reached for the paper.
But it was too late.
May you like
Because I had already seen the words written underneath.
"Subject confirmed alive."
