Chapter 7 - The Truth Ava Carried

"You need to remember what Michael made you forget."

Ava's words hit me harder than anything else that night.

I stared at her.

The woman I had mourned without knowing I was mourning.

The woman my mind had erased.

The woman who somehow knew the missing pieces of my life.

I wanted to run toward her.

I wanted to ask a thousand questions.

But my body wouldn't move.

Because there was one thing I couldn't ignore.

Ava looked at me with tears in her eyes.

Not happiness.

Not relief.

Pain.

Like seeing me alive was both a miracle and a reminder of everything she had lost.

"You really don't remember me."

It wasn't a question.

It was a wound.

I swallowed.

"I'm sorry."

Her face changed.

"No."

She shook her head.

"Don't apologize."

She stepped closer.

"That was never your fault."

Michael immediately moved between us.

"Ava, you shouldn't be here."

Ava looked at him.

And the anger in her eyes was something I had never seen before.

"After everything you did, you still think you get to decide where I go?"

The restaurant became silent.

I looked at Michael.

"Everything he did?"

He didn't answer.

Ava looked at me.

"Emily, we need to leave."

I frowned.

"Why?"

Her eyes moved around the room.

"Because if I found you, they can too."

Daniel immediately understood.

"Who?"

Ava looked at him.

"You know who."

Daniel's face became serious.

The same fear I had seen all night appeared again.

But this time, it was different.

This time, it was real.

I grabbed my coat.

"Someone explain."

Ava looked at me.

"I will."

She looked at Michael.

"But not here."

Michael stepped forward.

"Emily, don't go with her."

I looked at him.

For years, I would have listened.

For years, his opinion was the one that mattered most.

But that woman was gone.

The woman who trusted him without question.

"Why?"

He stopped.

"Because she is the reason you lost your memories."

The words froze everyone.

Ava looked at him.

"Tell her the truth."

Michael's jaw tightened.

"Tell her what?"

"Tell her you weren't there when she needed you."

I looked at Ava.

"What happened?"

Ava took a deep breath.

"Eight years ago, I discovered something about Michael's family."

Michael immediately interrupted.

"That isn't true."

Ava ignored him.

"I found financial records showing someone was using Emily's identity."

I looked down.

The same nightmare again.

My name.

My signature.

My life.

Used by someone else.

"I tried to tell you."

Ava looked at me.

"But before I could, Michael found out."

I looked at him.

"How?"

Ava answered.

"Because someone inside his company was working with the people behind it."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Who?"

Ava looked at him.

"Michael's father."

Everyone went silent.

Even Michael.

I looked at him.

"Your father?"

Michael closed his eyes.

Ava continued.

"Your father built the system. Michael discovered it."

I frowned.

"Then why would Michael hide it?"

Ava looked at him.

"Because he made a deal."

My heart dropped.

"What deal?"

Nobody answered.

I looked at Michael.

He looked exhausted.

Like he had been carrying a weight for eight years.

Finally, he whispered:

"They threatened you."

I stared at him.

"What?"

"They told me if I exposed everything, they would come after you."

Ava shook her head.

"That was only part of the truth."

Michael looked at her.

"Stop."

"No."

Ava's voice broke.

"She deserves to know."

I felt my chest tighten.

"What else?"

Ava looked at me.

"They didn't just threaten you."

She paused.

"They wanted you to disappear."

The words felt unreal.

I looked around.

Everyone was silent.

"They caused the accident?"

Ava nodded slowly.

"Yes."

My breathing became shallow.

"Why?"

Ava looked at the documents.

"Because you found the evidence."

I shook my head.

"I didn't."

She looked at me.

"You did."

Another memory flashed.

A dark office.

A computer screen.

A folder.

A man's voice behind me.

"You shouldn't have looked there."

I grabbed the table.

Daniel caught me.

"What did you see?"

I closed my eyes.

"I don't know."

Ava moved closer.

"Try."

I focused.

The memory came in pieces.

A file.

A name.

A picture.

Then a conversation.

Michael's voice.

"Emily, don't touch that."

My eyes opened.

I looked at him.

"You were there."

Michael looked away.

"You were there when I found the files."

He nodded.

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

His voice was quiet.

"Because you didn't know who to trust."

I laughed bitterly.

"And you decided that person was you?"

Michael looked hurt.

"Yes."

The honesty almost made me angry.

Almost.

Ava reached into her bag.

She removed a small flash drive.

She placed it on the table.

"This is what started everything."

I stared at it.

"What is it?"

"The original files."

Daniel looked surprised.

"You still had them?"

Ava nodded.

"I hid them before they found me."

I looked at the small device.

A tiny object.

But it had destroyed so many lives.

"Why didn't you give this to the police?"

Ava looked down.

"Because the police were already involved."

A cold silence followed.

"What?"

Ava looked at me.

"The person who helped cover everything was not just someone in Michael's family."

She took a breath.

"It was someone with access to every investigation."

Daniel's face changed.

"Who?"

Ava didn't answer.

Instead, she looked at me.

"Emily, before your accident, you left yourself a message."

I frowned.

"A message?"

She nodded.

"You knew you might lose your memory."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

"You wrote something for yourself."

Ava reached into her bag again.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"I was supposed to give this back when you remembered."

I slowly opened it.

The handwriting was mine.

Again.

But this time, I remembered.

I remembered writing it.

The words were simple.

Only one sentence.

"Trust Ava. Do not trust the person who tells you he saved you."

My hands started shaking.

I looked at Michael.

He looked like he had stopped breathing.

Because he knew.

He knew exactly what the sentence meant.

I turned the paper over.

There was something else.

A date.

And a name.

The name was not Michael.

It was someone else.

Someone I had never expected.

Daniel saw my expression.

"Emily?"

I slowly looked up.

Because the person I had trusted most after my accident...

The person who told everyone he protected me...

The person who had been beside me every day...

Was the person I had written the warning about.

And then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I answered.

A voice whispered:

"Emily, if Ava is with you, leave immediately."

I looked at Ava.

"Who is this?"

The voice became quieter.

"Because she is not the person you should be afraid of."

A pause.

Then the person said:

"Look behind Michael."

I slowly turned.

Michael was standing beside the table.

Behind him was a security monitor.

And on the screen was live footage from the restaurant.

Showing all of us.

But the timestamp was from eight years ago.

And in the video...

I was standing beside Ava.

May you like

Holding the same flash drive.

And pointing a gun at Michael.
