Chapter 4 - The Woman Behind The Locked Door

The staff door opened.
Everyone turned.
Nobody spoke.
For a few seconds, I could only hear the sound of my own heartbeat.
Then someone stepped out of the darkness.
A woman.
She was older than me.
Maybe in her late fifties.
She wore a simple black coat and held a small leather bag against her chest.
But it wasn't her appearance that made everyone freeze.
It was the way Michael looked at her.
Like he had just seen a ghost.
"Linda."
The name escaped his mouth.
The woman stopped.
Her eyes moved toward him.
Then toward me.
And I immediately knew something.
She hadn't come here by accident.
She came here for me.
Daniel stepped closer to me.
"Who is she?"
Michael didn't answer.
Linda smiled sadly.
"Still protecting him, Emily?"
My stomach tightened.
"Protecting who?"
She looked directly at Michael.
"Your husband."
The word felt strange.
Because Michael wasn't my husband anymore.
But hearing someone call him that reminded me of all the years I had spent believing I knew him.
I looked at Michael.
"Explain."
He shook his head.
"Emily, don't listen to her."
That sentence hurt more than if he had admitted everything.
Because it sounded exactly like him.
The same calm voice.
The same confidence.
The same way he always tried to control the situation.
Linda slowly walked toward the table.
She placed her leather bag down.
Then she looked at the photograph Daniel had shown me.
"You finally found it."
Daniel stared at her.
"You knew about the photograph?"
Linda looked at him.
"I was the one who gave it to him."
My eyes moved between them.
"What?"
Daniel's expression changed.
"You never told me."
Linda looked away.
"Because I didn't know if she was ready."
I almost laughed.
Ready?
Everyone kept deciding what I could handle.
Everyone kept protecting me from the truth.
But nobody protected me from living a lie.
I picked up the photograph.
"Why is this picture important?"
Linda sat down slowly.
"Because it was taken the day your life changed."
I frowned.
"What happened that day?"
She looked at Michael.
"He knows."
Michael immediately stood.
"This is enough."
Daniel stepped forward.
"No."
His voice was firm.
"For once, she gets to know."
Michael looked angry.
But beneath the anger...
I saw fear.
Linda opened her bag.
She removed an old folder.
The edges were worn.
The paper looked like it had been carried around for years.
She placed it on the table.
"This belonged to you."
I looked at the folder.
"My name?"
There it was.
Written on the front.
EMILY CARTER.
My hands became cold.
I slowly opened it.
Inside were documents.
Contracts.
Bank statements.
Copies of identification papers.
But the strangest thing was the signature.
My signature.
On every page.
I looked up.
"I didn't sign these."
Linda nodded.
"I know."
"Then why does it look like I did?"
Nobody answered.
I flipped through the pages faster.
The dates.
The companies.
The transactions.
Everything connected back to Michael.
My voice became quiet.
"What did you do?"
Michael looked at me.
"Emily, please."
"No."
I held up the documents.
"You don't get to say please."
The restaurant had become silent around us.
People were watching.
But I didn't care anymore.
I had spent years caring about appearances.
About keeping peace.
About being the understanding wife.
And where had that gotten me?
A stranger at my birthday table knew more about my life than I did.
Michael sat down slowly.
"I was trying to protect you."
I stared at him.
"From what?"
He looked at Daniel.
Then Linda.
Then me.
"From the people who were after those documents."
I froze.
"What people?"
Michael rubbed his face.
"I never wanted you involved."
"Yet my name was on everything."
He closed his eyes.
And that was the first time I saw him look defeated.
"I made a mistake."
I almost smiled.
A mistake.
That was what people called things when they didn't want to admit the damage they caused.
Linda looked at me.
"Michael didn't create the documents."
I looked at her.
"What?"
"He found them."
That changed everything.
I looked at Michael.
"You found them?"
He nodded.
"Eight years ago."
"Where?"
"In my father's office."
I stared.
I knew Michael's father.
A powerful businessman.
A man who had died suddenly years earlier.
I remembered the funeral.
I remembered Michael becoming distant afterward.
I remembered him saying:
"My family has problems I need to handle."
I never questioned it.
Because I loved him.
Linda continued.
"Michael discovered his father had been using Emily's identity for years."
I felt my breath disappear.
"Why?"
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Daniel spoke.
"Because Emily was the perfect person to hide behind."
I looked at him.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel looked at the documents.
"Someone created a financial network using your name."
My hands started shaking.
"But why me?"
Linda looked down.
"Because nobody would suspect the quiet wife."
Those words hurt.
Not because they were cruel.
Because they were true.
I had spent years being the person everyone underestimated.
The person who stayed home.
The person who trusted.
The person who never looked deeper.
I looked at Michael.
"Did you know?"
He didn't answer.
I felt my heart break.
"Did you know someone was using me?"
Finally, he whispered:
"Yes."
The answer hit harder than I expected.
I stepped back.
"How long?"
"Emily..."
"How long?"
His eyes filled with regret.
"Eight years."
Everything went quiet.
Eight years.
He had known.
Eight years while I built a life with him.
Eight years while I smiled beside him.
Eight years while I thought our biggest problem was a failing marriage.
I looked at Daniel.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
His face changed.
"I tried."
"Then why didn't you?"
"Because every time I got close, someone stopped me."
"Who?"
Daniel looked at Michael.
I followed his eyes.
Michael immediately shook his head.
"No."
Daniel reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small device.
A recording device.
"I saved this because I knew one day she would need to hear it."
Michael stepped forward.
"Daniel."
But it was too late.
Daniel pressed play.
A man's voice filled the space.
An older man's voice.
Michael's father.
"If Emily ever finds these files, it means Michael failed to keep her away from the truth."
My blood turned cold.
The recording continued.
"She cannot know that the person who betrayed her is someone she trusts more than anyone."
Everyone became silent.
The message ended.
I looked at Michael.
Slowly.
Carefully.
"Who was he talking about?"
Michael didn't answer.
Linda looked terrified.
Daniel looked toward the entrance.
Then his phone vibrated.
He checked the screen.
His face changed.
"What?"
I asked.
He didn't respond.
"Daniel."
He turned the phone toward me.
A message had appeared.
One sentence.
One name.
And the name was mine.
The message said:
"Ask Emily why she erased her own memory."
I stared at the screen.
I couldn't move.
Because before I could ask what that meant...
The restaurant lights went out.
May you like
And from somewhere behind me, someone whispered:
"Emily... you finally remembered me."
