Chapter 3 - The Letter I Was Never Supposed To Read

The paper shook in my hands.

Not because I was scared.

Because I recognized the handwriting.

My handwriting.

The same curves.

The same small mistake I always made when writing the letter "y."

The same way I crossed my letter "t."

I stared at the sentence in front of me.

"I need you to know the truth before Michael destroys everything."

I read it again.

And again.

My mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

I looked at Daniel.

"What is this?"

He didn't answer.

That frightened me more than anything.

Because Daniel always seemed prepared.

He had answers.

He knew things about my life that I didn't even know.

But now he looked lost.

Like this was something even he wasn't expecting.

The woman who gave me the envelope quietly stepped back.

I turned toward her.

"Who are you?"

She looked at Michael.

Then at me.

"My name is Sarah."

I waited.

Nothing else.

"Sarah who?"

Her eyes softened.

"Sarah Bennett."

The name meant nothing.

Until Michael reacted.

His face changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

And Daniel saw it too.

"Michael," Daniel said.

His voice was cold.

"Why does that name scare you?"

Michael looked away.

"I don't know her."

Sarah immediately laughed.

A quiet, painful laugh.

"Of course you don't."

I felt the room closing around me.

Everyone knew something.

Everyone except me.

I looked down at the letter again.

The handwriting was mine.

But I had no memory of writing it.

The top of the page had a date.

Eight years ago.

The exact year when everything in my life started changing.

I looked at Michael.

"Did I write this?"

He stayed silent.

That silence broke something inside me.

Because I knew him.

I knew every expression on his face.

I knew when he was annoyed.

I knew when he was lying.

And right now...

He was terrified.

"I need you to tell me the truth," I said.

Michael looked at me.

"Emily..."

"No."

My voice became stronger.

"Not another excuse."

The restaurant had become a stage.

Everyone around us was still living normal lives.

People were eating.

Laughing.

Celebrating.

Nobody knew that my entire past was falling apart at a birthday table.

Daniel pulled out a chair.

"Sit down."

I looked at him.

"Why are you helping me?"

For the first time, he hesitated.

Then he said:

"Because I should have helped you eight years ago."

Those words hit harder than I expected.

I slowly sat down.

Daniel remained standing.

He looked at the letter.

"Emily, before I explain anything, you need to understand something."

"What?"

"The person who wrote this letter knew she was in danger."

My fingers tightened around the paper.

"I wrote a letter because I was in danger?"

Daniel nodded.

"And you gave it to someone you trusted."

I looked at Michael.

"No."

The word came out before I could stop it.

Daniel didn't say anything.

But his silence told me everything.

I stood up again.

Michael immediately moved toward me.

"Emily, listen to me."

"How long?"

He stopped.

"How long did you know?"

His face changed.

"I didn't know about this letter."

"But you knew about Sarah."

He looked at the floor.

That was enough.

I walked away from the table.

I needed air.

I needed space.

I needed to understand how my entire marriage had become something I didn't recognize.

Daniel followed me outside.

The cold night air hit my face.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Finally, I said:

"Tell me everything."

Daniel looked through the restaurant window.

Michael was still inside.

Watching us.

"Eight years ago, I was investigating a financial case."

"The one involving Michael?"

He nodded.

"But I found something bigger."

"What?"

Daniel looked at me.

"You."

I frowned.

"Me?"

"You were never part of the crime."

"Then why were you investigating me?"

"I wasn't."

He paused.

"I was investigating why someone was using your identity."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

Daniel continued.

"There were financial records, documents, and contracts signed under your name."

I shook my head.

"I never signed anything."

"I know."

"Then who did?"

Daniel looked away.

"That's the question I never answered."

A thousand thoughts rushed through my mind.

Someone had used my name.

Someone had created a fake version of me.

Someone had built a secret life around my identity.

And somehow, Michael knew.

I whispered:

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Daniel looked guilty.

"Because I tried."

I stared at him.

"What do you mean?"

"I went to your apartment."

My eyes widened.

"When?"

"The night you found out Michael wanted a divorce."

I remembered that night.

I remembered sitting on the floor of my living room.

Crying.

Confused.

Feeling like my entire world had ended.

Daniel continued.

"I saw you through the window."

"And?"

"And Michael was already there."

My stomach tightened.

"He was?"

Daniel nodded.

"He wasn't packing his things."

I felt dizzy.

"What was he doing?"

Daniel looked directly at me.

"He was searching your apartment."

The world went quiet.

I couldn't breathe.

"Searching for what?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Because the answer was worse than I expected.

"The same thing he has been trying to find for eight years."

I looked back at the restaurant.

At Michael.

The man I had loved.

The man I trusted.

The man who knew all my secrets.

But apparently had secrets of his own.

I walked back inside.

Michael stood up immediately.

"Emily."

I held up the letter.

"Where did you find this?"

His expression changed.

"I didn't."

"Then why does Sarah know about it?"

No answer.

I looked at Sarah.

"Why did you give this to me?"

Sarah looked nervous.

"Because someone needs to protect you."

"From who?"

She looked at Michael.

And whispered:

"From the person who has been controlling your life since the day you met him."

Michael stepped forward.

"That's enough."

Daniel moved between us.

"Michael."

The warning in his voice was clear.

Michael looked at him.

"You have no idea what you're doing."

Daniel smiled sadly.

"I know exactly what I'm doing."

Michael reached into his jacket.

My heart jumped.

But he didn't pull out a weapon.

He pulled out his phone.

There was a message waiting.

He read it.

Then his face turned completely white.

I noticed.

"What is it?"

He didn't answer.

"Michael."

Slowly, he turned the phone toward me.

A photo was on the screen.

A photo taken moments ago.

Inside the restaurant.

Inside our private conversation.

But the person who took it wasn't one of the guests.

Because the angle was impossible.

It was taken from behind the locked staff door.

And underneath the photo was one sentence.

A warning.

"She remembers everything now."

Michael dropped the phone.

Then the restaurant lights suddenly flickered.

May you like

The staff door behind us slowly opened.

And a voice from the darkness said my name...
