Chapter 12 - The Night Alessandra Chose to Fight

Alessandra shouted, “Let him!”

Massimo looked at her.

Salvatore released the switch.

Phones began vibrating everywhere.

Files flooded journalists, law enforcement agencies, and financial institutions.

Salvatore laughed.

“Now you’re finished.”

Alessandra smiled.

“No.”

His expression changed.

“What?”

“You taught me something.”

She held up her phone.

“Never trust the first ledger.”

Matteo and Vanessa had found Salvatore’s distribution server.

Instead of stopping the release, they attached Marcello’s authenticated archive to it.

Every forged accusation against Massimo went out beside the evidence proving who created it.

Salvatore had distributed the case against himself.

Federal agents handcuffed him.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Massimo stood over his uncle.

“You killed my father.”

Salvatore smiled weakly.

“And you became me anyway.”

Massimo looked around.

At the weapons.

Blood.

Fear.

Then at Alessandra.

He stepped back.

“No.”

That one word mattered more than a bullet.

He let the agents take Salvatore.

The next weeks were brutal.

Arrests spread across New York.

Executives disappeared from boardrooms into federal custody.

Vantage Shipping collapsed.

The stolen fifty million was traced.

Alessandra was publicly cleared.

Vanessa entered protective custody while cooperating with prosecutors.

Rachel accepted charges for her role but provided evidence that saved her daughters and exposed additional members of the network.

Matteo began physical therapy.

And Massimo faced his own choice.

His businesses included legitimate companies.

They also included things Alessandra refused to pretend were legitimate.

One evening she found him in the townhouse study.

“What are you doing?”

“Closing accounts.”

“Which?”

“All the ones you would yell about.”

“I don’t yell.”

Massimo looked at her.

She folded her arms.

“Frequently.”

He smiled.

“I’m done.”

“With what?”

“The organization.”

Alessandra stared.

“You can’t just resign from the mafia.”

“I own most of it.”

“That is not reassuring.”

He came around the desk.

“I spent my life believing power kept family safe.”

“And now?”

“Leo walked into my life wearing wet sneakers and gave me a dinosaur Band-Aid.”

She smiled.

“I remember.”

“He wasn’t afraid of me.”

“He has questionable judgment.”

Massimo touched her cheek.

“He made me wonder what I was protecting.”

Alessandra’s breath caught.

“And?”

“I want something else.”

He kissed her.

This time there was no gunfire.

No blood.

No deadline.

She let herself want him.

Later, they collected Leo from Matteo’s rehabilitation center.

Leo had begun calling him Daddy Matteo.

It was awkward.

Sweet.

Painful.

Matteo never demanded more.

He knew fatherhood would have to be earned.

Massimo accepted that too.

The two cousins rebuilt something that had been stolen from them.

Then one evening, Matteo found a final recording in Marcello’s archive.

He called Massimo.

“You need to see this.”

They gathered in the study.

Marcello appeared on-screen.

“If my sons are watching—”

Massimo frowned.

“Sons?”

Matteo stared.

Marcello continued.

“Then Salvatore failed to bury the last truth.”

Massimo went pale.

“I have two sons.”

Matteo whispered, “What?”

Marcello looked directly into the camera.

“One is Massimo.”

May you like

He paused.

“The other is the man Massimo has called cousin his entire life.”
