Chapter 11 - The Name on Leo’s Birth Certificate

Alessandra insisted on going.

Massimo refused.

They argued until Leo appeared at the study door.

“Are you mad?”

Both stopped.

Alessandra crouched.

“No, baby.”

“You’re loud.”

Massimo crouched too.

“We disagree.”

Leo looked between them.

“My teacher says use nice words.”

Massimo nodded solemnly.

“Your teacher is wise.”

Leo went back to Teresa’s replacement caretaker.

Alessandra looked at Massimo.

“He’s right.”

“About nice words?”

“About us being loud.”

“That was mostly you.”

She stared.

“Do you want another slap?”

He smiled.

It was the first time she realized she loved his smile.

That frightened her more than Salvatore.

They developed a plan.

Alessandra would appear to surrender.

Vanessa had hidden a transmitter in the ledger binding.

Federal teams would surround the courthouse.

Matteo, against medical orders, joined remotely.

Before Alessandra left, he called her.

“I need to tell you about the birth certificate.”

“Now?”

“Yes.”

The mysterious paternal entry was not a biological designation.

It was a protective legal identity.

Massimo Costa had been listed as emergency guardian.

Years earlier, Matteo had named Massimo guardian of any future child.

When Salvatore discovered Alessandra’s pregnancy, Matteo secretly activated the paperwork.

“So Massimo’s name was there?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t my copy show it?”

“Sealed court record.”

Alessandra sat quietly.

Massimo had been legally connected to Leo before ever seeing his face.

Fate had a cruel sense of humor.

At the courthouse, Salvatore waited.

Vanessa.

Teresa.

Rachel’s daughters.

All alive.

Salvatore smiled at Alessandra.

“The accountant.”

“The murderer.”

“Such moral certainty.”

“Occupational hazard.”

“Where is Massimo?”

“Not coming.”

Salvatore laughed.

“He always comes.”

A voice sounded behind him.

“Yes.”

Massimo stepped from the darkness.

Salvatore turned.

“You never learned.”

Massimo looked at Alessandra.

“No. I finally did.”

Agents moved outside.

Salvatore’s men raised weapons.

Alessandra held up the ledger.

“You want this?”

Salvatore looked at it.

“Yes.”

She dropped it into a metal trash bin.

Then lit a match.

Salvatore lunged.

She dropped the match.

Flames rose.

“No!”

He ran toward it.

Massimo tackled him.

Gunfire erupted.

Agents stormed the courthouse.

Vanessa freed herself.

Rachel’s daughters screamed.

Teresa shielded them.

Alessandra crawled behind a bench.

Massimo and Salvatore fought.

Not elegantly.

Not cinematically.

Two men carrying twenty-two years of hatred.

Salvatore grabbed a gun.

He aimed at Massimo.

Alessandra screamed.

A shot rang out.

Salvatore fell.

Vanessa stood behind him holding the weapon.

Silence.

Massimo looked at her.

Vanessa lowered the gun.

“It’s over.”

But it wasn’t.

Salvatore smiled from the floor.

His vest had stopped the bullet.

And in his hand was a dead-man switch.

“If I release this,” he whispered, “every file framing Massimo goes public.”

Alessandra stared.

Salvatore’s thumb began to lift.

Then her phone vibrated.

A message from Matteo appeared.

May you like

DON’T STOP HIM.

LET HIM RELEASE IT.
