Chapter 7 - The Family He Thought He Lost Forever

For three years, Alessandro Moretti believed he had lost Elena.

He believed the woman he loved had walked away from him.

He believed the silence was her choice.

He believed the empty space she left behind was something he would have to carry for the rest of his life.

But now, standing alone in his office with a photograph of Elena in his hand, Alessandro realized something far worse.

He had not lost her.

Someone had taken her away.

Someone had built a lie around her disappearance.

And someone had allowed him to live with that pain.

The difference changed everything.

Because grief was something a person learned to survive.

But betrayal?

Betrayal demanded an answer.

The photograph remained on Alessandro's desk all night.

He did not sleep.

He did not move.

He simply stared at the image.

Elena.

Alive.

Older.

Different.

But still the woman whose smile had once been the only thing capable of making him forget the world.

The photograph had been taken recently.

Not years ago.

Not some old memory.

Recently.

Which meant someone knew where she was.

Someone knew the truth.

Someone had been watching him.

Waiting.

Marco entered the office just before sunrise.

He immediately noticed Alessandro had not moved.

"Any news?"

Alessandro looked up.

"Trace the photograph."

Marco nodded.

"We're already working on it."

"And?"

"Nothing yet."

Alessandro's expression hardened.

"Nothing?"

Marco placed a folder on the desk.

"The image was sent through multiple encrypted servers. Whoever sent it knew what they were doing."

Alessandro looked at the photograph again.

"Victor."

Marco did not answer.

He did not need to.

Both men knew.

Victor Salvatore was the kind of enemy who never showed his face until he wanted you to see him.

He enjoyed control.

He enjoyed watching people search.

Watching them panic.

Watching them make mistakes.

But Alessandro was no longer the man Victor thought he knew.

The old Alessandro would have reacted with anger.

The old Alessandro would have attacked.

The old Alessandro would have burned everything down before asking questions.

But Annie changed him.

And that made him more dangerous.

Because now he was patient.

Now he had something worth protecting.

When Annie woke up, she found Alessandro sitting near the window.

She looked at him carefully.

"You didn't sleep."

It was not a question.

Alessandro looked surprised.

"How do you know?"

She shrugged.

"Your face."

He almost smiled.

"My face?"

"You have the angry face."

Alessandro looked away.

"Apparently I have many faces."

Annie nodded.

"Yes."

"How many?"

She started counting on her fingers.

"Happy face."

One finger.

"Sad face."

Second finger.

"Angry face."

Third finger.

Then she looked at him seriously.

"And the one you make when you miss someone."

Alessandro became still.

Children were supposed to be innocent.

But Annie had lived through things that forced her to understand emotions too early.

"Do you miss someone?" he asked softly.

She looked down.

"My mommy."

The answer was immediate.

No hesitation.

No confusion.

Just honesty.

Alessandro sat beside her.

"I miss her too."

Annie looked at him.

"You do?"

He nodded.

"Very much."

She studied him for a moment.

Then asked:

"Are you going to find her?"

Alessandro looked at the little girl who was his daughter.

The child Elena had protected.

The child she had trusted would one day find him.

"Yes."

"How do you know?"

Because he was Alessandro Moretti.

Because nobody took something from him and walked away.

Because he had spent his life finding answers.

But he gave her a different answer.

"Because she waited for me."

Annie smiled.

Like that was the only answer she needed.

By afternoon, Marco finally found something.

Alessandro was in the middle of a meeting when Marco entered without knocking.

Everyone in the room immediately stopped talking.

Nobody interrupted Alessandro Moretti.

Nobody except Marco.

That alone told everyone something serious had happened.

Alessandro stood.

"Everyone leaves."

The room emptied instantly.

"What did you find?"

Marco placed a tablet on the table.

"We found the location."

Alessandro looked at the screen.

A building.

An abandoned medical facility outside the city.

"How?"

"The photograph background matched an old building owned by a company connected to Victor."

Alessandro stared at it.

"Elena was there."

"Yes."

"Recently?"

Marco nodded.

"Less than two weeks ago."

A strange calm settled over Alessandro.

Less than two weeks.

Elena had been alive.

Close.

And he had been unaware.

"Who else knows?"

Marco hesitated.

"Victor."

Alessandro looked at him.

"Of course."

There was no surprise.

Only anger.

"What is he planning?"

"We don't know."

Alessandro walked toward the window.

For years, Victor had been playing with people.

Collecting secrets.

Controlling information.

But he had made one mistake.

He underestimated what a man would do for his child.

"Prepare the team."

Marco nodded.

"When do we move?"

Alessandro looked toward the hallway.

Toward Annie.

Then back at Marco.

"Not yet."

Marco frowned.

"You found her."

"I found a location."

The distinction mattered.

Alessandro had learned something over the years.

A desperate man rushed.

A smart man prepared.

"We don't walk into Victor's trap."

Marco understood.

"We make him think we're not coming."

Alessandro nodded.

"Exactly."

That evening, Annie found Alessandro packing a small bag.

She immediately noticed.

"Are you leaving?"

He stopped.

The question sounded familiar.

The same fear.

The same uncertainty.

Alessandro turned around.

"No."

She looked at the bag.

"Then why are you packing?"

He walked over.

"I'm going to find something."

"What?"

He looked at her.

"Your mommy."

Annie became quiet.

For the first time, Alessandro saw hope and fear appear together in her eyes.

"Is she coming home?"

The question was almost impossible.

Because he wanted to say yes.

He wanted to promise.

But promises without certainty were dangerous.

So he told her the truth.

"I'm going to bring her back."

Annie reached for his hand.

"Like you brought me home?"

Alessandro looked down at their hands.

His large hand.

Her tiny fingers.

The first time he opened his car door for her, he thought he was helping a stranger.

He never imagined he was opening the door to his own family.

"Exactly like that."

Later that night, Alessandro received another message.

This time, there was no photograph.

Only a video.

His heart immediately changed.

Because he recognized the location.

The abandoned medical facility.

The camera moved through dark hallways.

Then stopped.

A woman appeared.

Elena.

Alive.

Tired.

But alive.

She looked directly into the camera.

And then she spoke.

"Alessandro..."

His entire body froze.

He had waited eight years to hear her voice.

Eight years.

But the happiness lasted only seconds.

Because Elena looked afraid.

"Please don't come looking for me."

Alessandro stared at the screen.

"What?"

The video continued.

"If you are seeing this, it means they know about Annie."

His expression changed.

"Elena..."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I tried to protect her."

A pause.

"I tried to protect you."

Alessandro moved closer to the screen.

Then came the words that changed everything.

"The person behind this isn't Victor."

Silence.

Because Alessandro had expected Victor.

He had prepared for Victor.

But Elena continued.

"Victor is only working for someone else."

The video glitched.

Elena looked over her shoulder.

Like someone was nearby.

Then she whispered:

"The person who destroyed our family..."

A sound interrupted her.

Her expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

Then the screen went black.

The video ended.

Alessandro stood frozen.

Not because he did not have answers.

Because he had too many questions.

Victor was not the enemy.

He was only a piece.

Someone else had planned everything.

Someone else had separated him from Elena.

Someone else had stolen three years with his daughter.

Marco entered.

He immediately saw Alessandro's face.

"What happened?"

Alessandro slowly turned.

His eyes were different now.

Not angry.

Not afraid.

Determined.

"Victor isn't the one we need to find."

Marco frowned.

"Then who?"

Alessandro looked at the black screen.

At the last image of Elena.

At the woman he thought he lost forever.

"The person who took my family from me."

Outside, the city lights burned against the darkness.

And somewhere hidden in that city, someone believed they still controlled the game.

They believed Alessandro Moretti was chasing the wrong enemy.

They believed they had already won.

But they had forgotten one thing.

A man who has nothing to lose is dangerous.

May you like

But a father who has finally found what was taken from him...

Is unstoppable.
