Chapter 3 - The Daughter He Never Knew Existed

I had spent four years believing my greatest loss was Isabella.

I was wrong.

My greatest loss was a daughter I never knew existed.

A child who had been alive somewhere in this world while I stood beside an empty grave believing my family had been taken from me.

The thought was almost impossible to accept.

Almost.

But then I looked at Lily.

And every doubt disappeared.

There was something about her.

Something I could not explain.

Maybe it was the way her tiny fingers held onto mine whenever I came close.

Maybe it was the way her eyes opened when she heard my voice.

Or maybe it was simply the truth that my heart recognized before my mind could.

She was mine.

My daughter.

The realization should have filled me with happiness.

Instead, it filled me with rage.

Because someone had stolen years from us.

Years I would never get back.

The first steps I never saw.

The first words I never heard.

The nights when she cried and needed her father.

The birthdays.

The moments that every parent dreamed about.

Someone had taken them.

And I wanted to know who.

By morning, the storm had disappeared.

But the darkness inside me remained.

The Moretti mansion was unusually quiet.

Normally, mornings inside my home were controlled chaos.

Security reports.

Business meetings.

Phone calls.

People moving through the halls because everyone knew my time was valuable.

But that morning, nobody wanted to make unnecessary noise.

Everyone felt the change.

Everyone knew something had happened.

The man who had walked into his study the night before was not the same man who walked out.

I entered the small guest room where Dr. Ricci had been watching Lily.

The moment I opened the door, my eyes immediately found her.

She was sleeping peacefully.

A small white blanket covered her body.

For the first time in years, I felt something I thought I had forgotten.

Peace.

I stood there silently.

A mafia boss.

A man feared by thousands.

Standing beside a crib, afraid to move because he did not want to wake his own child.

It was almost ridiculous.

But it was real.

Dr. Ricci noticed me.

“She is stronger than we expected.”

I looked at him.

“Will she be okay?”

The doctor smiled slightly.

“Yes.”

One word.

But it carried more weight than any victory I had ever achieved.

“She was weak because she wasn’t properly cared for,” he continued. “But she is young. Her body can recover.”

I nodded.

Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.

“Can you confirm?”

Dr. Ricci understood immediately.

A DNA test.

The confirmation.

The proof.

He hesitated.

“Alessandro…”

“I need the truth.”

He nodded.

“I already collected samples.”

“How long?”

“Twenty-four hours.”

Twenty-four hours.

It felt like an eternity.

Because in my mind, I already knew.

I did not need a test.

But after years of enemies, lies, and betrayal, I had learned one thing.

Feelings could be manipulated.

Evidence could not.

I left the room and walked back toward my study.

Clara was waiting there.

She looked better than the night before, but fear still controlled her expression.

Emma sat beside her mother.

The little girl looked different now.

Clean clothes.

Dry hair.

A full meal.

But her eyes were still those of a child who had lived through too much.

When she saw me, she immediately stood.

“Is Lily okay?”

The question came before anything else.

Not about herself.

Not about her mother.

The baby.

I looked at her.

“She is okay.”

Emma released a breath she had been holding.

A small smile appeared.

“She likes you.”

I almost smiled.

“She does?”

Emma nodded.

“She stopped crying when you held her.”

I looked away for a moment.

Because that simple sentence affected me more than it should have.

Children did not care about power.

They did not care about reputation.

They only knew who made them feel safe.

And somehow, a baby who had just met me knew something adults spent years forgetting.

I was her father.

I looked at Clara.

“Tell me everything.”

She lowered her eyes.

“I already told you what I know.”

“No.”

My voice remained calm.

“But you did not tell me everything.”

She became silent.

I walked toward the desk.

On top of it sat the necklace.

The silver pendant.

The only thing Isabella had left behind.

“Isabella trusted you.”

“Yes.”

“Enough to hide my daughter with you.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did she not contact me?”

Clara’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because she tried.”

That stopped me.

“What?”

“She tried many times.”

My expression changed.

“Explain.”

Clara took a deep breath.

“After Lily was born, Isabella wanted to come back to you.”

My heart tightened.

“She was afraid.”

“Of me?”

“No.”

Clara shook her head.

“Of what would happen if you knew.”

I stared at her.

“She believed someone close to you was watching everything.”

The words repeated in my mind.

Someone close.

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it is the truth.”

Her voice became emotional.

“Isabella was careful. She knew your enemies. She knew how dangerous your world was.”

She looked at Lily’s photograph on the table.

“But she never expected the danger to come from someone she trusted.”

I leaned forward.

“Someone in my organization?”

Clara did not answer.

She did not need to.

Silence was sometimes the loudest confession.

I looked toward the window.

The city outside continued moving.

People walking.

Cars driving.

A normal world.

But my world had changed.

Someone inside my circle had betrayed Isabella.

And I had spent four years protecting that person without knowing.

My phone rang.

Antonio.

I answered.

“Tell me.”

His voice was controlled.

“We checked the security footage from last night.”

“And?”

“There is a problem.”

“What kind?”

A pause.

“Someone deleted the cameras around the servants’ wing.”

My eyes narrowed.

“When?”

“Three hours before Emma arrived at your study.”

Three hours.

Meaning whoever attacked Clara knew exactly what they were doing.

They planned it.

They waited.

They believed they had removed the evidence.

They were wrong.

“What else?”

Antonio continued.

“We found something hidden inside room seven.”

“What?”

“A letter.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Bring it.”

“It has Isabella’s handwriting.”

For a moment, I could not breathe.

The world became silent again.

A letter.

From Isabella.

After four years of searching.

After four years of wondering if I would ever hear her voice again.

I finally had something she left behind.

“Do not open it.”

Antonio hesitated.

“Boss?”

“I said do not open it.”

Because some things were too important to rush.

I needed to see her words myself.

I ended the call.

Clara watched me carefully.

“She knew this day would come.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“Isabella knew eventually Lily would find her way back to you.”

The statement sounded impossible.

“How?”

Clara looked toward the sleeping baby.

“Because she told me something.”

“What?”

Clara’s voice became quiet.

“She said…”

A pause.

“She said, ‘If Alessandro ever holds my daughter, he will know the truth before anyone tells him.’”

I looked down at my hands.

The same hands that had built an empire.

The same hands that had destroyed enemies.

Now they were the hands that held a baby who had been stolen from me.

A knock came from the door.

Antonio entered.

He carried a small envelope.

Old.

Folded.

Protected inside a clear evidence bag.

My entire body became still.

On the front were three words.

My name.

Alessandro.

Written in Isabella’s handwriting.

I walked toward it slowly.

Every step felt heavier.

Because I knew.

Whatever was inside that envelope would change everything.

I opened the bag carefully.

I touched the paper.

And for the first time in four years…

I felt like Isabella was close.

I unfolded the letter.

The first line destroyed me.

“My love, if you are reading this, it means they failed to keep our daughter from you.”

I stopped breathing.

My eyes moved across the page.

And then I read the next sentence.

“I am sorry you had to find out this way.”

My hand shook.

Because beneath the words was the truth I had been searching for.

The truth about Isabella.

The truth about Lily.

And the truth about the person who wanted my family erased.

I continued reading.

And as I reached the final paragraph, my anger turned into something colder.

Something more dangerous.

Because Isabella had not only left me a daughter.

She had left me a warning.

A warning about the person standing closest to me.

May you like

The person I trusted the most.

And the person who had destroyed everything I loved.
