Chapter 2 - The Necklace From a Lost Love

I had spent four years trying to forget the sound of Isabella’s voice.
Four years trying to accept the empty space she left behind.
Four years telling myself that memories were just memories.
But the moment I saw that silver necklace around the baby’s neck, every lie I had built to survive collapsed.
Because some things were impossible to forget.
Especially when they were proof that the past was still alive.
The room remained silent after Emma’s words.
“She said if anything happened to her… I had to bring Lily to you.”
I stared at the little girl standing in front of me.
Seven years old.
Cold.
Exhausted.
Terrified.
Yet she had crossed the entire estate during a storm because someone had told her I was the only person who could save her sister.
My first thought was not about the necklace.
It was about Isabella.
Why would she leave a child with instructions to find me?
Why would she hide something this important from me?
And most importantly…
Why did she never tell me I had a daughter?
I looked down at the infant in my arms.
Lily.
The name echoed strangely in my mind.
I had imagined having a family with Isabella countless times.
A home.
Children running through the halls.
A life that did not involve fear and violence.
But after she died, that dream became something I buried with her.
Now, standing in my study at midnight, holding a baby who carried the necklace I gave Isabella, that impossible dream was looking back at me.
“Emma.”
The girl lifted her eyes.
“Where is your mother?”
Her expression changed immediately.
The small amount of courage she had left seemed to disappear.
“She was in the servants’ room.”
“Was she hurt?”
Emma looked down.
“I don’t know.”
Her voice became quieter.
“She told me not to cry.”
Something tightened in my chest.
A child saying those words meant she had been forced to grow up too quickly.
I turned toward Antonio.
“Take two men. Go to room seven.”
He nodded.
“And bring her here.”
I paused.
“Alive.”
Antonio understood the meaning behind my words.
In my world, that single word mattered.
He left immediately.
Dr. Ricci approached carefully.
“Boss, I need to examine the baby.”
I handed Lily over reluctantly.
It surprised me.
I had held weapons worth more than most people’s houses.
I had signed contracts that changed the lives of hundreds of people.
I had watched enemies fall without blinking.
But giving that tiny baby to someone else felt harder than anything I had ever done.
The doctor noticed.
But he said nothing.
He placed Lily on the examination table near the fireplace.
Emma immediately moved closer.
“Is she going to be okay?”
Dr. Ricci looked at her gently.
“We are going to help her.”
Emma nodded.
But she did not look convinced.
Children knew when adults were hiding fear.
I walked back to my desk.
The necklace was still in my hand.
I turned the pendant over again.
The silver surface reflected the firelight.
I remembered the day I bought it.
A different life.
A different man.
Isabella had laughed when she saw it.
“You know this is too expensive.”
I had smiled.
“You say that every time.”
“Because you keep buying things that cost too much.”
“It is not expensive.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“Alessandro.”
I leaned closer.
“It is only silver.”
She smiled.
“Then why are you looking at me like you bought me the moon?”
Because she was the closest thing to the moon I had ever known.
Bright.
Impossible to reach.
And the only thing that made my darkness feel less empty.
I closed my hand around the necklace.
Someone had kept this.
Someone had protected it.
Someone knew the truth.
The question was…
Who?
A knock interrupted my thoughts.
Antonio returned.
Behind him were two guards carrying a woman carefully.
My entire body went still.
The woman was unconscious.
Her maid uniform was torn.
There was a bruise near her temple.
“She's alive,” Antonio said.
“Good.”
They placed her on the sofa.
Emma ran forward.
“Mama!”
The girl grabbed her mother’s hand.
The woman slowly opened her eyes.
For a moment, she looked confused.
Then she saw me.
And all the color disappeared from her face.
That reaction told me everything.
She knew who I was.
And she was afraid.
Not because I was Alessandro Moretti.
Because she knew something about Isabella.
“Your name,” I said.
The woman swallowed.
“Clara.”
“Clara.”
My voice remained calm.
“What happened tonight?”
Her eyes moved toward Emma.
Then toward Lily.
Then finally to the necklace in my hand.
The fear in her face deepened.
“I was hoping she would never need to bring it to you.”
The room became colder.
I stepped closer.
“You knew?”
Clara looked down.
“I knew one day the truth would find you.”
My jaw tightened.
“What truth?”
She did not answer immediately.
Instead, she looked at Emma.
The little girl was standing beside her mother, holding her hand.
“Emma.”
“Yes, Mama?”
“Go with Dr. Ricci.”
Emma immediately shook her head.
“No.”
“Please.”
The fear in Clara’s voice made Emma obey.
Dr. Ricci guided the child away.
When the door closed, only three people remained.
Me.
Clara.
And the truth she had been hiding.
“Start talking.”
Clara looked at the necklace.
“Isabella gave it to me.”
The words hit harder than expected.
My fingers tightened.
“She was alive?”
Clara looked at me with sadness.
“Not anymore.”
A wave of anger moved through me.
“Then explain.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Four years ago, Isabella discovered something.”
“What?”
“A betrayal.”
I waited.
“She found out someone close to you was working against you.”
My expression hardened.
“Who?”
“I don’t know everything.”
I stepped closer.
“Wrong answer.”
“I swear.”
Her voice shook.
“Isabella trusted very few people. But she trusted me enough to protect Lily.”
The name felt heavier now.
Lily.
My daughter.
“She was pregnant?”
Clara nodded slowly.
“She found out shortly after you left for Europe.”
My entire body froze.
Europe.
The business trip that changed everything.
The trip after which Isabella supposedly died.
“She was going to tell me.”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t she?”
Clara looked away.
“Because someone found out.”
The fire cracked behind us.
The sound was the only thing in the room.
“Who?”
“I don’t know his name.”
A pause.
“But Isabella knew him.”
I stared at her.
“Someone close.”
Clara nodded.
“She told me if anything happened to her, I could not take Lily anywhere except to you.”
“Why?”
“Because she believed you were the only person powerful enough to protect her.”
The words should have comforted me.
Instead, they made me angry.
Because Isabella had trusted me with her life.
But she had died alone.
And I had not been there.
I looked at the necklace.
“Why hide my daughter from me?”
Clara’s expression broke.
“She wasn't hiding her from you.”
A pause.
“She was hiding her from them.”
That sentence stayed in the air.
Them.
The people who killed Isabella.
The people who wanted Lily gone.
The people who had spent four years making me believe I had lost everything.
I looked toward the door where Emma had disappeared.
A seven-year-old child had walked into my home carrying the last piece of the woman I loved.
And she had brought me something more dangerous than a secret.
She had brought me a reason to fight again.
My phone suddenly rang.
Antonio’s number.
I answered.
“What?”
His voice was serious.
“Boss.”
I immediately knew something was wrong.
“What happened?”
“We searched the servants’ quarters.”
“And?”
A pause.
Then:
“We found evidence someone else was there tonight.”
My eyes narrowed.
“Explain.”
“Two sets of footprints outside room seven.”
The storm continued outside.
Rain hitting the windows.
Wind shaking the walls.
Someone had come here.
Someone had attacked Clara.
Someone had been trying to stop Emma from reaching me.
“Anything else?”
Antonio hesitated.
“Yes.”
“What?”
His voice lowered.
“We found a piece of black fabric caught on the window frame.”
I looked at Clara.
Her face had gone pale.
“Boss…”
Antonio continued.
“The fabric matches the security uniforms used inside the main estate.”
Silence.
I slowly turned toward the mansion around me.
My home.
My fortress.
The place where I believed I was untouchable.
But someone inside these walls had betrayed me.
Someone had known about Isabella.
Someone had known about Lily.
And someone had tried to erase the last proof of the family I never knew I had.
I looked down at the silver necklace.
Then at the tiny baby sleeping in the next room.
For four years, I had searched for the person responsible for taking Isabella away from me.
Now I realized something.
I had not been searching far enough.
May you like
The enemy was not outside my world.
The enemy had been standing inside it all along.
