Chapter 5 - The Daughter Who Held The Secret

Daniel stared at the message.
"Come home, Ethan. She's waiting."
No one in the ballroom spoke.
The name on the screen was impossible.
The person who sent it was supposed to be dead.
The person Daniel had spent eleven years mourning.
Claire.
His wife.
The woman everyone believed had disappeared forever.
I watched his fingers tighten around the phone.
For a moment, I thought he would break.
Not physically.
Daniel was not that kind of man.
But emotionally.
Like someone had opened a door he had spent years locking.
"Daniel..."
He looked at me.
His eyes were different.
The calm bodyguard was gone.
The man standing in front of me was someone who had just discovered that his entire life might have been built on a lie.
Robert stepped closer.
"You need to go."
Daniel looked at him.
"Where?"
Robert looked toward the entrance.
"Home."
Daniel almost laughed.
"That's not my home anymore."
Robert's expression changed.
"Yes, it is."
"No."
Daniel shook his head.
"I buried that life."
Robert lowered his voice.
"You buried the wrong thing."
Those words hit harder than anything else.
Because Daniel didn't argue.
He didn't deny it.
He just stood there.
Thinking.
Remembering.
I had never seen someone fight so hard against his own memories.
Finally, Daniel turned toward me.
"I need to leave."
I nodded.
But I had questions.
Thousands of them.
"Are you going alone?"
His eyes met mine.
For a second, he looked surprised.
Like he expected me to be afraid.
Maybe angry.
Maybe to ask him to explain everything.
Instead, I asked if he was going alone.
Because despite all the secrets...
Despite everything I had learned tonight...
I still knew one thing.
Daniel had saved me more times than I could count.
And now he needed someone.
"No."
His answer was immediate.
"You shouldn't come."
I almost smiled.
There it was.
The Daniel I knew.
Still trying to protect everyone.
"Daniel."
He looked at me.
"You are my employee."
His expression remained serious.
"And I am the person who hired you."
I stepped closer.
"So I think I have the right to know why my bodyguard was once considered dead."
For the first time that night...
Daniel almost smiled.
Almost.
Then he looked away.
"You don't know what you're walking into."
"Neither do you."
That stopped him.
Because it was true.
For eleven years, Daniel believed he knew his story.
Now he didn't.
Robert watched us silently.
Then he said:
"She's going to need both of you."
I turned toward him.
"Who?"
Robert looked at Daniel.
"Claire."
The name alone changed the room.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Like hearing it still hurt.
"Where is she?"
Robert reached into his jacket and pulled out another envelope.
"This was delivered three days ago."
Daniel frowned.
"Three days?"
Robert nodded.
"She knew I would find you."
Daniel took the envelope.
Before opening it, he looked at the handwriting.
His face changed.
"You recognize it."
I whispered.
He nodded.
"Every day."
The words were quiet.
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
No explanation.
No long message.
Just a handwritten note.
Daniel read it.
Then read it again.
His hands started shaking.
"What does it say?"
He didn't answer.
Robert looked at him.
"You need to tell her."
Daniel looked at me.
I saw hesitation.
Fear.
Then he handed me the paper.
The message was short.
But it changed everything.
"Ethan, if you are reading this, then they finally found you. I couldn't come back until I knew Emma was safe. She remembers everything. She knows why I disappeared. She knows who betrayed us."
I looked up.
"Emma?"
Daniel took the paper back.
His voice was barely audible.
"My daughter."
Robert nodded.
"Claire found her."
Daniel stared.
"Found her?"
"Yes."
"But Emma has been with me."
Robert looked at him.
"No."
The answer was so simple.
So certain.
Daniel became still.
"What do you mean?"
Robert looked at him.
"Emma has been protected."
Daniel's expression changed.
"Protected by who?"
Robert didn't answer.
That silence was enough.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Who has my daughter?"
Robert looked away.
And for the first time...
I saw fear in his eyes.
"Someone who promised Claire they would keep her safe."
Daniel's voice became colder.
"Name."
Robert hesitated.
Then said:
"Your old partner."
The air disappeared.
Victor looked shocked.
"No."
Daniel turned.
"You know him?"
Victor's face changed.
"I thought he died."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
Nobody answered.
Then Victor whispered:
"Michael."
Daniel froze.
The name meant something.
Something painful.
"Michael was my closest friend."
Robert nodded.
"And the person who betrayed you."
The room went silent.
I watched Daniel.
His expression didn't change.
But I could see the damage.
The betrayal wasn't from an enemy.
It was from someone he trusted.
Someone who knew everything about him.
Someone who knew Claire.
Someone who knew Emma.
Daniel looked at Robert.
"Where is he now?"
Robert shook his head.
"I don't know."
"Then why are we standing here?"
"Because he wants you to find him."
Daniel frowned.
Robert pulled out his phone.
He showed a video.
A security recording.
A little girl sitting at a table.
A pink bracelet on her wrist.
Emma.
Daniel moved closer.
His entire expression changed.
The dangerous man.
The hidden fighter.
The person everyone feared.
Disappeared.
He was just a father watching his daughter.
The video played.
Emma looked directly at the camera.
Then she spoke.
"Dad..."
Daniel stopped breathing.
Her voice was older.
Different.
Eleven years had passed.
But he recognized it instantly.
"I know you were told Mom was gone."
Daniel covered his mouth.
The room stayed silent.
Emma continued.
"But that's not true."
The video ended.
No explanation.
No location.
Nothing.
Just her voice.
And the truth Daniel had spent years trying to avoid.
He looked at Robert.
"Where was this recorded?"
Robert didn't answer.
Daniel grabbed his arm.
"Where?"
Robert finally looked at him.
"At the only place Claire knew you would never search."
Daniel released him.
"Where?"
Robert slowly said:
"Your old house."
Daniel went completely still.
"My old house burned down."
Robert nodded.
"That's what everyone thought."
A cold feeling moved through me.
Because this wasn't just about Claire anymore.
Or Michael.
Or Daniel's past.
Someone had been hiding a place from him.
A place connected to everything.
Daniel grabbed his jacket.
"We're going."
Nobody stopped him.
Not Marcus.
Not Victor.
Not Robert.
Because everyone understood.
The quiet bodyguard was no longer protecting someone else.
He was finally going after the truth about himself.
We reached the car outside the ballroom.
Daniel opened the door.
Then his phone vibrated.
One new message.
Unknown number.
He looked at it.
And this time...
He didn't look confused.
He looked terrified.
I saw the message appear on his screen.
May you like
Only one sentence.
"Don't go to the house alone. Michael is already inside."
